Intro
(30s) Al:
Hello farmers and welcome to another episode of the Harvest Season, my name is Al
(34s)
and we’re here today to talk about Cottagecore games.
(35s) Kevin:
My name is Kevin.
(40s)
Woo!
(41s)
I’m so confused, Al.
(44s)
I mean, we do that every episode.
(46s) Al:
Yes.
(47s)
Hello, Kevin.
(48s)
Welcome.
(49s)
Welcome back.
(50s) Kevin:
Thank you, Al.
(52s)
Good to be on.
(54s)
Yeah, I’m catching up on the episodes.
(56s)
Very excited, Kelly, on the last episode.
(58s)
I mean, tune in on that.
(58s) Al:
kevin live blogs his reaction to the podcasts on slack so like i’m not even joking let me look at
(59s) Kevin:
But I do.
(1m 7s) Al:
the most recent one how many you posted uh let’s see so currently you’re you’ve have you finished
(1m 13s)
you’ve not finished the steam steam frame one right currently at 34 currently at 34 comments
(1m 15s) Kevin:
No, I’m pretty close.
(1m 17s)
It’s a beefy episode.
(1m 20s) Al:
on that episode I think some have gone much longer than that oh yeah it’s uh the the can’t remember
(1m 21s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1m 22s)
Yeah.
(1m 28s) Al:
one in the middle of august was 73 comments on slack for that uh that was the longest longest episode so
(1m 32s) Kevin:
oh man um yeah so if you wish kevin were on the episode and had those juicy choice thoughts
(1m 45s)
basically these threads of mine on the slack are supplemental material to give you exactly that
(1m 51s)
um many many good reactions
(1m 54s)
yeah
(1m 55s) Al:
you got 60 on one last month as well and then 36 you listened to two episodes that day goodness me
(1m 59s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(2m 2s)
Yeah, I did.
(2m 2s) Al:
i’m sorry i’m sorry so you were washing dishes and then every minute you were putting
(2m 3s) Kevin:
Yeah, I had a lot of dishes and cleaning that day, I remember.
(2m 11s) Al:
the dishes down drying your hands and typing something up in the Slack
(2m 14s) Kevin:
Yes.
(2m 15s) Al:
that’s dedication kevin dedication
(2m 15s) Kevin:
Yes.
(2m 17s)
That is exactly how it goes.
(2m 19s) Al:
well
(2m 23s)
well
(2m 23s) Kevin:
I got to let the thoughts out, Al.
(2m 25s) Al:
there you go if you if you need to see kevin’s thoughts unfiltered thoughts
(2m 28s) Kevin:
Thank you.
(2m 32s) Al:
they are on the slack we’ll talk about the patreon at the end of the episode
(2m 32s) Kevin:
As they always are.
(2m 37s) Al:
but you can find it links in the show notes all right this episode we’re gonna do a big news
(2m 41s) Kevin:
Yep.
(2m 42s) Al:
catch up I promised this a couple weeks ago and I think last week as well um we have a lot of news
(2m 48s)
just so much news so much so much news so I thought let’s let’s shove all in one episode
(2m 49s) Kevin:
Many.
(2m 55s) Al:
um because the problem is if I try and do like oh I won’t do all of it this week
(2m 59s)
then it just gets more and more and it just builds up so let’s let’s get through it all
(3m 3s)
um uh but first up kevin what have you been up to
What Have We Been Up To
(3m 7s) Kevin:
uh what have I been up to um okay so pokopia shocker but uh I have actually been undergoing
(3m 7s) Al:
yeah
(3m 13s) Kevin:
the specific task of completing the decks finally um I am sad I could not do it before the episode
(3m 20s)
but I am well let’s say this I am one pokemon not in the decks and it’s mew and uh you know
(3m 27s)
that’s just the cherry on top um but I have every other pokemon with the exception and I have it in
(3m 35s)
the decks,
(3m 37s)
but I just wanted it anyways,
(3m 39s)
the other shellos form.
(3m 41s) Al:
Oh yes, yes, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, you’ve got to get them both, come on, obviously.
(3m 43s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(3m 45s)
Yeah.
(3m 45s)
So it’s been aggravating.
(3m 48s)
I’ve been feeding Snorlax every day and I’ve created now three different arrow sites and still it’s spawning.
(3m 57s)
It’s the pink one.
(3m 58s)
I’m so upset,
(4m) Al:
Yeah, it does get, it got to the point where I was nearly finished, where I was just like spending five minutes a day going in and anything spawned yet today? Nope. Right. Okay. I’m done then.
(4m) Kevin:
but yeah,
(4m 8s)
there yep yeah that’s pretty much where i’m at um there was a lot of work on the evs specifically
(4m 14s)
like I know you can earn the or buy the recipes to make the food but I said uh you know i’ll i’ll do
(4m 20s)
what they were kind of guiding me to and I did all the challenges to unlock the food um so I spent a
(4m 26s)
lot of time doing that a lot of builds and and and electric things and flareon was the last one um
(4m 33s)
I think that’s where you have to do all the builds but uh so I spent a lot of time doing that but um
(4m 38s)
but yeah it’s been it’s been fun gives you a specific mission like that as uh add to the
(4m 44s)
experience um and just in time because the uh the halloween thing started uh just today a day of
(4m 50s)
recording um it’s a fun little event it’s interesting because okay you you know you can’t find yourself as
(4m 57s)
a object the pokemon approaches you you say oh look at that and then you unchange and you shock them um
(5m 3s)
And then they give you pumpkin candy
(5m 6s)
As it’s called
(5m 7s)
But it’s kind of interesting
(5m 8s)
Is that the amount of candy
(5m 10s)
That they give you varies
(5m 11s)
And I think
(5m 12s)
The more they’re interested in the object
(5m 14s)
Because it more lines up
(5m 16s)
With their, you know
(5m 16s)
Favorite categories or whatever
(5m 18s)
The more candy you can get
(5m 19s)
So yeah, that’s cool
(5m 20s)
All the furniture looks great
(5m 24s) Al:
I think it’s also fun that all the different events have had a kind of slightly different way of getting a thing.
(5m 29s)
Like, they’re all just generally, here’s a Pokemon, they have stuff for you to buy, give them the thing that they want to buy.
(5m 36s)
But, like, the way to get the thing is different most of the time, which is quite fun.
(5m 42s)
It’s not just, because, like, after, I think the first one was going to the Dream Islands and getting, oh, it was Sableye, wasn’t it?
(5m 42s) Kevin:
Yeah, it is.
(5m 48s)
Yeah, I think the first two?
(5m 50s) Al:
Was that the first one?
(5m 51s) Kevin:
No, it was Hopit.
(5m 52s)
The Hopit family, which was go to the D-Monts.
(5m 52s) Al:
It was Hoppup was the first one.
(5m 54s)
And then Sableye was basically the same as well.
(5m 54s) Kevin:
But Sableye.
(5m 56s)
Yes, it was.
(5m 57s) Al:
And so I was a bit like, oh, these are all just going to be the same thing, aren’t they?
(6m 1s)
But then they started doing different ways to do it.
(6m 4s)
Like, there was the, I can’t even remember what the next one was.
(6m 4s) Kevin:
Yeah, the April Fools.
(6m 7s)
The April Fools, though.
(6m 7s) Al:
The April Fools was different, but, and, yeah.
(6m 9s) Kevin:
Yeah, it was a little quiz or whatever.
(6m 12s)
Jirachi, where you had to do a little request for Pokemon.
(6m 14s) Al:
Yurachi, yeah, that was that, yeah.
(6m 15s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(6m 16s) Al:
So they’re all slightly different, which is kind of fun.
(6m 18s) Kevin:
Yeah, yeah.
(6m 18s) Al:
It’s not just Pokemon item buy.
(6m 21s)
It’s like the thing you do to get the item is different.
(6m 23s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(6m 24s)
Yeah, it is fun.
(6m 25s)
And, you know, I think the quality of the items that have been coming out have been really good, too.
(6m 31s)
Like, just for decorating and whatnot.
(6m 34s)
And this is, like, the first really seasonal.
(6m 36s)
I guess the Hoppa’s kind of seasonal spring-ish.
(6m 39s)
But it was also just generally, you know, flowery, nature-y.
(6m 42s)
But this one’s, like, the real holiday-themed one.
(6m 43s)
So that’s fun.
(6m 44s) Al:
He is hoping.
(6m 44s) Kevin:
I’m excited.
(6m 45s)
We’re definitely getting Delibird for December, aren’t we?
(6m 50s)
Yeah.
(6m 52s)
Anyway, so, yeah.
(6m 53s)
Popopia, good stuff.
(6m 54s)
Good as always.
(6m 56s)
The other one.
(6m 57s)
I actually had something.
(7m)
Oh, good heavens.
(7m 1s)
What was it?
(7m 2s)
Oh, No Man’s Sky.
(7m 4s)
So, I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky.
(7m 8s)
Are you familiar with the expeditions?
(7m 10s)
Or what an expedition is, Al?
(7m 11s) Al:
No. Tell me.
(7m 12s) Kevin:
Okay.
(7m 12s)
They are limited time events in No Man’s Sky.
(7m 17s)
I believe this one’s lasting six weeks.
(7m 20s)
It doesn’t take all six weeks to play it.
(7m 22s)
But it’s, you know, set period, complete.
(7m 25s)
Basically, how it works is it’s a mini separate save file where they pop you on a planet and they give you a specific…
(7m 34s)
Specific set of tasks.
(7m 36s)
And once you complete all the tasks, you get rewards for the event.
(7m 42s)
And there’s been different ones, though.
(7m 44s)
They do them every now and then, randomly.
(7m 46s)
There’s one where you have to start on a worm planet, I think.
(7m 49s)
I remember Calvin did that one.
(7m 52s)
But this one is a very special expedition because it is the 10th anniversary No Man’s Sky expedition celebration thing.
(8m 3s)
and what the
(8m 4s)
tasks basically
(8m 5s)
it’s amounting to
(8m 6s)
they are making you
(8m 7s)
play the entirety
(8m 9s)
of the game
(8m 9s)
in a quick snapshot
(8m 10s)
all the updates
(8m 11s)
rolling out
(8m 12s)
as you progress
(8m 14s)
and it’s
(8m 16s)
it’s kind of fun
(8m 17s)
so obviously
(8m 18s)
some things
(8m 18s)
they’ve kept
(8m 19s)
on the UI
(8m 19s)
and quality of life
(8m 21s)
stuff but
(8m 21s)
like for instance
(8m 22s)
third party
(8m 23s)
the third person
(8m 24s)
camera was not
(8m 25s)
available at the start
(8m 26s)
so when you start
(8m 27s)
the expedition
(8m 27s)
you can’t change
(8m 28s)
to a third person
(8m 29s)
camera you only get
(8m 30s)
first person view
(8m 31s)
and you only unlock
(8m 34s)
through the different
(8m 35s)
events and tasks
(8m 37s)
and as an extra
(8m 39s)
special treat
(8m 39s)
once you complete
(8m 40s)
a certain number
(8m 41s)
of tasks
(8m 42s)
pertaining to
(8m 43s)
a certain
(8m 44s)
one of the updates
(8m 45s)
you get a little
(8m 47s)
transmission
(8m 48s)
a little log
(8m 49s)
from one
(8m 50s)
Mr. Sean Murray
(8m 51s)
himself talking
(8m 52s)
about just
(8m 53s)
reflecting on
(8m 53s)
the past
(8m 54s)
and the history
(8m 55s)
and the development
(8m 56s)
of each of these
(8m 56s)
updates
(8m 57s)
which was
(8m 58s)
blew my mind
(8m 59s)
because whoa
(9m)
voices and
(9m 1s)
no mess
(9m 1s)
got into Sean Murray
(9m 2s)
but
(9m 4s)
but yeah
(9m 5s)
that’s a lot
(9m 5s)
of fun
(9m 6s)
and
(9m 7s)
it’s
(9m 9s)
sort of
(9m 10s)
a cheeky
(9m 10s)
little celebration
(9m 11s)
because
(9m 12s)
it is
(9m 12s)
the planet
(9m 13s)
is basically
(9m 14s)
the planet
(9m 15s)
from the trailer
(9m 16s)
the infamous
(9m 17s)
trailer
(9m 17s)
pre-release
(9m 18s)
and one of
(9m 19s)
the rewards
(9m 20s)
is the
(9m 20s)
giant
(9m 21s)
dinosaur
(9m 21s)
sort of
(9m 22s)
dinosaur
(9m 23s)
as a
(9m 23s)
planet
(9m 23s)
that was
(9m 24s)
also the
(9m 25s)
trailer
(9m 25s)
so very
(9m 26s)
fun
(9m 26s)
big
(9m 27s)
big fan
(9m 27s)
of it
(9m 27s)
yeah
(9m 28s) Al:
Fair enough.
(9m 29s) Kevin:
anyone cares
(9m 30s)
or wants
(9m 30s)
to play
(9m 30s)
got about
(9m 31s)
two weeks
(9m 31s)
when you
(9m 31s)
hear this
(9m 32s)
but yeah
(9m 34s)
that’s No Man’s Sky
(9m 35s)
let’s see
(9m 36s)
aside from that
(9m 38s)
nothing
(9m 38s)
I’ve been playing
(9m 39s)
things here
(9m 40s)
they’re a little
(9m 41s)
Yu-Gi-Oh
(9m 41s)
oh Masters
(9m 43s)
has been
(9m 43s)
cool
(9m 44s)
instead of
(9m 44s)
the usual
(9m 45s)
Halloween update
(9m 46s)
the Treasures
(9m 47s)
of Ruin
(9m 47s)
from Paldea
(9m 49s)
the four
(9m 49s) Al:
Yes.
(9m 49s) Kevin:
legendaries
(9m 51s)
and they gave
(9m 51s)
them to
(9m 51s)
villains
(9m 52s)
yeah
(9m 54s) Al:
Okay.
(9m 55s)
I think that, yeah, that makes thematic sense of some kind.
(9m 55s) Kevin:
yeah
(9m 58s)
so
(10m 1s)
Getsis
(10m 2s)
gets
(10m 2s)
Chopin
(10m 4s)
the sword
(10m 4s)
the
(10m 6s) Al:
Yeah.
(10m 6s) Kevin:
little
(10m 7s)
snow
(10m 8s)
leopard
(10m 8s)
sword
(10m 8s) Al:
Yeah, yeah.
(10m 8s) Kevin:
guy
(10m 9s)
Lysander
(10m 10s)
gets
(10m 11s)
Chi-Yu
(10m 12s)
that’s
(10m 12s)
the
(10m 12s)
fish
(10m 13s)
the
(10m 13s)
little
(10m 14s)
goldfish
(10m 14s) Al:
Yeah.
(10m 14s) Kevin:
the
(10m 15s) Al:
My favorite for running through the Pokemon.
(10m 15s) Kevin:
yeah
(10m 21s) Al:
Oh, what’s it called?
(10m 23s)
Why have I forgotten the name of it?
(10m 25s)
The.
(10m 26s) Kevin:
GLC? Game?
(10m 27s) Al:
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
(10m 29s) Kevin:
The ZA?
(10m 30s)
What are you thinking?
(10m 31s) Al:
Oh, my word.
(10m 32s)
Words.
(10m 33s)
Completely gone.
(10m 34s)
The Pokemon League.
(10m 36s)
There we go.
(10m 37s) Kevin:
What?
(10m 38s) Al:
The Pokemon League.
(10m 39s) Kevin:
Oh, oh.
(10m 40s)
Oh, is it? Okay.
(10m 41s) Al:
Chi Yu.
(10m 42s) Kevin:
Is that good?
(10m 42s) Al:
Chi Yu is very good for you could if you had a turbo button and you powered up your Chi Yu and gave it.
(10m 47s) Kevin:
Mm-hmm.
(10m 50s) Al:
I can’t remember.
(10m 50s)
I think it was a dark type move that you gave it.
(10m 52s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(10m 52s)
Yeah.
(10m 53s) Al:
It would basically destroy everything in the it wasn’t the Pokemon League.
(10m 58s)
You could rerun.
(10m 59s)
What was it?
(10m 59s)
The what was it?
(11m)
The Scarlet and Violet had there was a tournament of some kind that was postgame.
(11m 5s) Kevin:
Oh, is it the Blueberry League thing?
(11m 6s) Al:
No, it wasn’t.
(11m 9s) Kevin:
No.
(11m 10s) Al:
It was it was it was pre DLC.
(11m 11s) Kevin:
Oh, yeah, the one in the main town where you just do a bunch of random battles.
(11m 16s) Al:
Yes, but I just I can’t remember what it was.
(11m 17s) Kevin:
Yeah, I forget the name of it, too.
(11m 18s) Al:
But anyway, point is it was really good for automatically running through that just with a turbo button and making a whole bunch of money.
(11m 26s) Kevin:
Sure, sure, that makes sense.
(11m 26s) Al:
you
(11m 28s) Kevin:
Yeah, that’s funny.
(11m 30s)
That’s good.
(11m 31s)
So, yeah, it’s very funny the story.
(11m 35s)
of how they’re approaching these, because, you know, Getsis is Getsis, and he just
(11m 38s)
wants to use Chien-Pao just to kill and take over everyone.
(11m 43s)
Lysander, actually somewhat benevolent, kind of like his character is Twisted Benevolence,
(11m 50s)
where he takes care of Chiyu, so nobody else will misuse it, basically.
(11m 55s)
And he does come in conflict with Getsis, which is kind of fun.
(12m)
And then the other two, Wo-Chien is…
(12m 2s) Al:
I have a question.
(12m 3s)
I have a question about these two.
(12m 6s)
They feel the wrong way round to me.
(12m 8s)
Or not the wrong way round, but like it feels weird that,
(12m 12s)
I guess it’s because it’s ground water,
(12m 13s)
but it just feels weird that Maxie has a water type Pokemon
(12m 17s)
and Archie does not.
(12m 18s) Kevin:
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
(12m 18s) Al:
Archie has a grass type Pokemon.
(12m 23s)
Those feel literally the wrong way round.
(12m 23s) Kevin:
So Ting Lu, yeah, yeah, I agree.
(12m 29s)
It’s weird Archie gets any of these, I guess, right?
(12m 33s) Al:
Yeah.
(12m 34s)
Yeah.
(12m 34s) Kevin:
Smaxy gets Ting Lu, the bull.
(12m 35s) Al:
Well,
(12m 36s)
maybe to you.
(12m 38s) Kevin:
Yeah, maybe, but it’s fire.
(12m 39s) Al:
Yes,
(12m 39s) Kevin:
Like, he’s literally the water man.
(12m 40s) Al:
I know,
(12m 40s)
but it’s clearly a fish.
(12m 42s) Kevin:
Yeah, good enough, true.
(12m 46s)
But, I mean, they gave it
(12m 48s)
Xander that imp and outfit to go with it,
(12m 50s)
so, you know, I’m not going to complain.
(12m 54s)
Yeah, Maxie just came out
(12m 55s)
with Wo-Chien, and he feels
(12m 57s)
the least compatible, the Earth Slug
(13m)
feels kind of
(13m 2s)
completely contrary to his character, but so
(13m 4s)
be it. I will say, at least
(13m 6s)
again, in the Master’s lore,
(13m 8s)
the storyline, like, this Archie
(13m 10s)
is actually chilled
(13m 11s)
out, like, after you come in conflict with him
(13m 14s)
throughout the story. He’s actually
(13m 15s)
a bit of an ally, and
(13m 17s) Al:
Right, but there’s a difference between actively trying to flood the world and, oh, I like non-water Pokemon now, right?
(13m 18s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(13m 25s)
That’s true.
(13m 26s) Al:
They’re two very different. There’s a lot of distance between those two things.
(13m 26s) Kevin:
Yeah, no, that’s true.
(13m 30s)
Yeah, I agree.
(13m 32s)
I agree. A lot of people felt it should
(13m 34s)
have gone to maybe Lusamine,
(13m 35s)
or just someone
(13m 38s)
else, but I agree.
(13m 41s)
Yeah, but I guess
(13m 42s)
they probably thought of Maxie first,
(13m 44s)
and they’re like, well, I guess we’ll
(13m 46s)
keep him here with Archie.
(13m 48s)
But you’re right. It doesn’t fit
(13m 50s)
at all.
(13m 53s)
Anyways, but yeah, so that’s
(13m 54s)
going on with Master’s. That’s kind of fun.
(13m 57s)
But yeah,
(13m 58s)
that’s all that’s been
(14m)
going on with me. What about you, L?
(14m 3s) Al:
so I have finished the main story of Fields of Mistria now since the last episode which which
(14m 10s) Kevin:
Oh, congrats.
(14m 11s) Al:
kevin has not listened to yet so uh um I the okay so I predicted the ending mostly let’s let’s put it
(14m 23s)
that way uh but it then also like it’s one of these things you probably don’t care about the the the story
(14m 30s) Kevin:
I mean, you know, I’m actually I am intent on playing wait Fields of Mistria. Oh, maybe. Yeah, I think I will at least call. I think I don’t care. I don’t care enough. Tell me. Tell me spoilers.
(14m 36s) Al:
Oh, right. Okay. Maybe I won’t. I won’t. It just like, so it’s one of these things where it’s like,
(14m 42s)
there’s a point where you’re like, oh, this person, clearly that person’s going to be a baddie,
(14m 46s)
right? Like, and they’re just using me to help them, blah, blah, blah. And then it gets to the
(14m 51s)
end and I’m like, oh, they don’t seem to be the baddie. Oh, wait, no, they are the baddie. They
(14m 55s)
just took a little bit longer to tell me. But then, then the other person who’s been helping
(15m 4s)
you out who’s
(15m 4s)
clearly the
(15m 5s)
goody or maybe
(15m 6s)
who knows
(15m 7s)
it’s unclear
(15m 8s)
they kind of have
(15m 9s)
a conversation
(15m 10s)
and you’re in the
(15m 11s)
middle and they’re
(15m 12s)
both saying that
(15m 12s)
the other one is
(15m 13s)
lying and then
(15m 14s)
at the end of it
(15m 14s)
they just go
(15m 15s)
shall we call a
(15m 16s)
truce and that’s
(15m 17s)
it
(15m 17s)
and you’re like
(15m 18s) Kevin:
Okay.
(15m 20s) Al:
okay and now
(15m 21s)
both of these
(15m 22s)
people who both
(15m 23s)
think that the
(15m 23s)
other one is evil
(15m 24s)
and trying to
(15m 25s)
destroy the world
(15m 26s)
they both live
(15m 28s)
here now
(15m 29s)
and they’re both
(15m 30s) Kevin:
Oh, okay.
(15m 32s)
Oh, goodness.
(15m 33s) Al:
they’re both
(15m 33s)
dragons but now
(15m 34s)
in human forms
(15m 36s)
and of course
(15m 37s)
they both have to
(15m 37s)
be you know
(15m 39s)
anime you know
(15m 40s)
you know what
(15m 40s) Kevin:
Anime, attractive, young 20s.
(15m 42s) Al:
you know yeah
(15m 42s)
you know I don’t
(15m 43s)
I don’t want to
(15m 44s)
you know it’s
(15m 44s)
family friendly I
(15m 45s)
don’t want to say
(15m 45s)
too much but you
(15m 46s)
know what I’m
(15m 46s) Kevin:
Yep.
(15m 46s) Al:
talking about
(15m 46s)
there’s a there’s
(15m 47s) Kevin:
Yep.
(15m 48s) Al:
some clothes
(15m 49s)
so it’s yeah
(15m 49s) Kevin:
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
(15m 52s) Al:
it’s odd an odd
(15m 53s)
ending I shall
(15m 54s)
say but I
(15m 58s)
yeah so when I
(16m)
say I predicted
(16m 1s)
that I predicted
(16m 1s)
that a certain
(16m 3s)
person would end
(16m 4s)
up in a specific
(16m 5s)
way but then it
(16m 6s)
like the ending
(16m 7s)
being literally
(16m 8s)
just like oh it
(16m 9s)
doesn’t matter we’re
(16m 10s)
both happy now let’s
(16m 11s)
go on was very
(16m 12s) Kevin:
Wow, it’s, it’s kind of wild how many, you know, Stardew likes, I’ll just use this specifically, like, struggle with story, and it’s hard, because that’s not the point of the game, but like, no, it didn’t, yeah, yeah.
(16m 12s) Al:
weird
(16m 13s)
yeah
(16m 26s)
well that’s the thing that’s the thing stardew didn’t really have an overarching story
(16m 29s)
like the only real overarching story is trying to rebuild the village right and I think that’s
(16m 35s)
why it works really well is because the whole point is learning it’s got good characters with
(16m 40s)
interesting stories and you want to learn their stories and yeah sure you’re building up the
(16m 45s)
village like that’s the point but yeah like so many of them i’m going to talk about this with
(16m 49s)
the other game that i’ve got as well so many of them are like no we have to do this big overarching
(16m 52s)
story and it’s like
(16m 54s)
if you say so it’s not really why
(16m 56s)
I’m playing the game but the other
(16m 57s) Kevin:
Do you really, though?
(16m 57s) Al:
the other problem the other problem with
(17m)
that is now that that story is finished
(17m 2s)
in Fields of Mistria I don’t feel like there’s anything
(17m 4s)
that I want to continue doing
(17m 6s)
because it’s like okay that’s that’s it
(17m 8s)
like that’s what I was focusing on and now that
(17m 10s)
that’s done you kind of I quite
(17m 12s)
often get this thing where when I
(17m 14s)
I feel myself getting to the
(17m 16s)
end of a game I’m like I need to finish the main story
(17m 18s)
and they finish the main story and you’re like oh okay
(17m 20s)
bye
(17m 21s)
finish with you now you know
(17m 23s) Kevin:
yeah that’s very fair I mean that’s the point I like they it’s an end point of some kind I know
(17m 30s)
the games could go on forever but um but it’s like it makes sense that’s where you’d want to
(17m 36s)
hop off like yeah this is okay i’ve had my fill I reached the credits or whatever i’m bouncing
(17m 40s)
off here that’s that’s very fair
(17m 44s) Al:
but I mean I had fun I you know I got over an hour over 100 hours in that game um I enjoyed it
(17m 48s) Kevin:
Well, there you go.
(17m 50s) Al:
uh one complaint I do have is that you hit a point in the story where it’s like oh you now
(17m 57s)
have to be at level eight friends with these two people and you’re like oh I haven’t been doing any
(18m 3s)
of that now I have to get them all the way up to level eight before I can progress this story
(18m 6s)
it’s very annoying
(18m 7s) Kevin:
Hmm, that’s okay.
(18m 9s)
Just bringing it on you like that is kind of annoying,
(18m 12s)
but I like that in principle.
(18m 15s) Al:
I i think I think it yeah so I think it worked fine because actually like their heart events
(18m 21s)
were quite tied into the story so all kind of worked quite well it’s just annoying how it was
(18m 26s)
like yeah it’s it’s there’s no indication that you’re going to need to do that at any point so
(18m 31s)
you’re not doing it as you go along and then suddenly it’s like oh there you go especially
(18m 32s) Kevin:
Yeah, they should have bread crumbed it.
(18m 36s) Al:
it’s like you know that not everybody’s interested in every character in every game right and so one
(18m 41s)
of them I was interested in but the other one I wasn’t particularly interested in I didn’t find
(18m 45s)
that were that interesting at all a person and so I wasn’t spending much time with them other than
(18m 50s)
what I needed to and then it’s and they were like they were already at two hearts which was quite
(18m 56s)
high for all all of the other characters and so it was the other one was at four I think so it wasn’t
(19m 1s)
as big a jump but yeah it’s like that’s a lot to to have to especially when you’re in the the end of
(19m 7s)
end game right like that was literally the last thing I had to do was was get to that point and
(19m 15s)
once i’d done that I finished it the same day because I was like there’s there’s nothing left
(19m 20s)
to do so yeah it was it’s a really weird I think it might have been better had it been like slow
(19m 24s)
progress right like oh to do this you have to have both of them at four hearts or to do this but you
(19m 26s) Kevin:
Yeah, exactly.
(19m 29s) Al:
have to be at six hearts like that would have felt less annoying
(19m 33s) Kevin:
Yeah, I’m surprised they didn’t do that, because I think that’s a good idea, but yeah, you got to make it clear, okay, that’s what you got to do early on, like, hey, two hearts to progress the story, and okay, I got to invest in the characters, because I’ll need it at some point.
(19m 46s) Al:
yeah yeah yeah and like some people would say oh well you know you should just be trying to get to
(19m 53s)
know all these characters anyway because that’s what the story is in these games and yeah sure
(19m 57s)
but also that’s not the bit that I enjoy most in these games right and especially early on it’s hard
(20m 4s)
to find gifts for people um
(20m 7s) Kevin:
Yeah, absolutely.
(20m 9s)
Heck, he’s a concerned ape himself.
(20m 12s)
I would say that’s not his favorite part in Stardew.
(20m 14s) Al:
I will say one really nice thing about Fields of Mistria, when you cook things, there’s a chance of getting a version of it that is a universally liked or universally loved gift, which was very helpful.
(20m 24s) Kevin:
Oh, that’s cool.
(20m 25s)
Dang, you made it.
(20m 25s) Al:
Very helpful at that point, because I obviously had a lot of stuff by that point.
(20m 29s)
So I was just like batch cooking tea and I would get like 50, 50 universally loved teas so I could just give them to anyone.
(20m 38s)
So that was very handy to do.
(20m 41s) Kevin:
That’s pretty sick.
(20m 42s)
Oh, man, this came out so good.
(20m 43s)
Everyone’s going to like this cookie.
(20m 45s) Al:
yeah yeah pretty much pretty much yeah pretty much uh so yeah that’s Fields of Mistria I think
(20m 47s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(20m 53s) Al:
I think i’m probably done I mean if they bring out another update that has something fundamentally
(20m 57s)
chain different I might go back to it but I don’t I don’t know what that would be um I think
(21m 5s)
yeah the most interesting thing I mean it has all I think it’s big strength is that it’s just
(21m 10s)
really nice to play right like there’s lots of quality of life improvements over stardew and
(21m 15s)
other games like it which makes it harder to go to other games like
(21m 20s)
harvest moon echoes of turadia which I started this week as well I finished Fields of Mistria and
(21m 21s) Kevin:
what
(21m 30s) Al:
immediately picked this game up and went oh boy I think the most painful bit the most painful bit
(21m 34s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(21m 36s) Al:
about this is that I saw them so they went from harvest moon one world which was interesting idea
(21m 44s)
and kind of moving forward
(21m 45s)
in an interesting way
(21m 46s)
but still kind of like your standard
(21m 49s)
like kind of 2D camera view
(21m 53s)
you know your Stardew view of a thing
(21m 57s)
so it still felt like the same kind of thing
(21m 59s)
but it was trying to do some different stuff
(22m)
in terms of like the adventuring
(22m 2s)
and stuff like that
(22m 2s)
that was interesting
(22m 3s)
to then going to Winds of Anthos
(22m 6s)
where it was like
(22m 6s)
this is basically now just like
(22m 8s)
souls like farming right
(22m 10s)
where it’s like
(22m 11s)
you’ve got this massive open world
(22m 13s)
and you’re moving around
(22m 15s)
and you’re trying to
(22m 16s)
they did the same thing in that one
(22m 18s)
where you could like
(22m 20s)
you moved your farm to different places
(22m 22s)
and that was
(22m 24s)
the problem with that is like
(22m 25s)
it’s hard to build up like this big farm
(22m 27s)
which is what I enjoy about these games
(22m 30s)
is building up this big farm
(22m 32s)
because you’re like constantly trying to move around
(22m 34s)
and get to different places
(22m 35s)
so you’re just
(22m 36s)
yeah you’re just
(22m 39s)
you’re constantly like
(22m 39s)
I don’t want to put down roots here
(22m 41s)
because I’m about to move away
(22m 42s)
so you’re not like farming a lot
(22m 44s)
which is kind of
(22m 45s)
seems silly for a Harvest Moon game
(22m 47s)
to not have a lot of farming
(22m 48s)
and then we went from that
(22m 49s)
to Home Sweet Home
(22m 50s)
which had a lot of flaws
(22m 51s)
but I thought was much more
(22m 53s)
in terms of what I like
(22m 55s)
and I felt like it was moving
(22m 57s)
in the right direction
(22m 58s)
it was you know
(22m 59s)
it was a 3D game
(23m)
but it was much more
(23m 1s)
like kind of fixed camera angle
(23m 3s)
that I like for farming games
(23m 6s)
I think that is personally
(23m 7s)
I think that’s the best way to do farming
(23m 10s)
because I just don’t like
(23m 12s)
the kind of 3D completely modernized
(23m 15s)
movable camera adventure type game
(23m 19s)
that then Echoes of Tiradia has gone back to
(23m 23s)
and it’s just oh they’re doing everything
(23m 26s)
that I didn’t like in Winds of Anthos again
(23m 30s)
but also in a way kind of worse in some ways
(23m 34s)
I don’t know I need I need to spend a lot more time
(23m 36s)
with this I think to get fully get my head around
(23m 39s)
how I feel about it I think my biggest pain
(23m 42s)
just now is the fact
(23m 43s)
that I’m
(23m 44s)
it took me
(23m 45s)
three hours to get through the tutorial
(23m 47s)
which was so painful to get through
(23m 50s) Kevin:
Oh my gosh, three hours.
(23m 50s) Al:
and I think it wasn’t three hours of constantly doing stuff right
(23m 55s)
because part of the problem is that when
(23m 57s)
when I get hit with constant cutscene after cutscene after cutscene
(24m 2s)
and tutorial cutscene tutorial cutscene
(24m 5s)
I just don’t want to play it right
(24m 7s)
so what you do is you do a little bit and you’re like
(24m 9s)
oh I’m exhausted and you put it down
(24m 10s)
right so it’s like
(24m 12s)
or you’re like you’re sitting there going like
(24m 14s)
oh here’s some cutscenes you can
(24m 15s)
drift off or whatever
(24m 16s)
so it’s not like three hours of constantly doing stuff
(24m 18s)
so I don’t know how long it would take you
(24m 21s)
if you were actually like trying to do it as quickly as possible
(24m 24s)
I just couldn’t
(24m 25s)
I couldn’t push myself through that right
(24m 27s)
you’d just be sitting with the switch going
(24m 28s)
oh great someone’s talking to me
(24m 30s)
and I don’t know what they expect from that
(24m 32s)
like am I actually taking this stuff in
(24m 34s)
or is it just kind of washing over me
(24m 36s)
because they’re just for three hours just telling me stuff
(24m 39s)
and part of the biggest problem is that they said
(24m 42s)
oh do you need tutorial on farming
(24m 44s)
and I said no
(24m 45s)
give me a tutorial on farming
(24m 46s)
and you’re like
(24m 47s) Kevin:
Yes, you do.
(24m 47s) Al:
I don’t
(24m 48s)
why did you
(24m 49s)
what are you doing
(24m 50s)
and it’s
(24m 51s)
they decide to have
(24m 53s)
these tutorial screens
(24m 54s)
for literally everything
(24m 55s)
like even after
(24m 57s)
you’ve got out of the tutorial
(24m 58s)
there’s still
(24m 58s)
literally
(24m 58s)
tutorial finishes
(24m 59s)
and it says
(25m)
oh you finished the prologue
(25m 1s)
you’re like great
(25m 2s)
fantastic
(25m 2s)
let’s play the game
(25m 3s)
and then you take three steps
(25m 4s)
and it starts a cutscene
(25m 6s)
like this is
(25m 7s)
what are you doing here
(25m 9s)
am I playing a game
(25m 10s)
or am I watching a film
(25m 12s)
I don’t know
(25m 13s)
what it wants from me
(25m 14s)
um
(25m 15s)
give you a ridiculous example of of the tutorialization of everything in this game
(25m 21s)
um so it’s it’s a large world um I have not gone very far yet because i’ve not put a huge number
(25m 27s)
of hours into it but they do have treasure chests around the place right so you’ll go and you’ll
(25m 32s)
adventure around you’ll be like oh here’s around the side of this cliff there’s a treasure chest
(25m 36s)
and I went and opened this treasure chest I kid you not it had a tutorial for the treasure chest
(25m 42s)
You click on the treasure chest and it goes, hey, you might find
(25m 45s)
treasure chests around the world how about you open them you might find some treasure and i’m like
(25m 49s)
yes obviously it’s a trrea… see when I see this glowing gold chest and I have gone over and
(25m 52s) Kevin:
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
(25m 57s) Al:
clicked on it you don’t need to explain to me go up to the glowing gold chest and open it I did that
(26m 3s)
I know how to do that it’s really obvious why are you now making me read a screen that tells me to
(26m 10s)
do what i’ve already done i’m just going to do that again
(26m 15s)
because one of the classic things that people talk about is um the original mario game is great at
(26m 22s)
like introducing you to the concepts of a 2d platformer in the gameplay right and so they
(26m 28s)
don’t really do tutorials they just have the first level it has here’s a little bit that you can run
(26m 33s)
along and then here’s an enemy that comes and if you die you realize oh I need to jump over it and
(26m 38s)
you jump over it and then it’s got some boxes and you pop there and so it’s just like it creates this
(26m 43s)
natural progression of learning how
(26m 45s)
it’s it is a masterclass is what game designers get shown like game design 101 this is what you do
(26m 52s)
imagine if mario now it’s like you jump and it goes it pops up with a screen that says hey well
(26m 56s) Kevin:
you
(26m 58s) Al:
done you jumped if you jump in the game you go up and you’re like no I don’t need that right what
(27m 2s)
are you doing it literally had one like I know I know that not everybody has the level of skill
(27m 9s)
and understanding of games as I do but also I feel like when i’m starting again
(27m 15s)
you don’t need to tell me how to move my character and how to move the camera right like I just like
(27m 23s)
this is such standard stuff there I really really think that I didn’t mean didn’t need any of that
(27m 30s)
tutorial now to be fair to it it does save all of save all of those tutorial screens in the settings
(27m 36s)
so I can go back and look at them which I am thankful for because I did not take in most of it
(27m 41s)
and there were a couple of things I was like oh I don’t know where this is or how like because there’s
(27m 45s)
like game specific things that they always do and I could not remember what they’d said because they
(27m 50s)
just throw a million screens at me and so I could go into the settings and look for them and be like
(27m 55s)
oh that’s what that meant okay great um but it’s just bizarre bizarre decisions this game has email
(28m 1s)
but they still talk about it like it’s physical mail it’s really weird it’s like hey you’ve got you get
(28m 3s) Kevin:
what what what does that mean
(28m 10s) Al:
this tablet right and it’s like that’s where you get your mail but it still talks
(28m 15s)
about getting letters and it still shows it as late it’s really weird it doesn’t I don’t know why
(28m 21s)
it’s like they don’t want to let go of some of the ideas but they do want to improve things they do
(28m 28s)
want to progress it but they don’t want to really do that it’s just such a weird decisions in a lot
(28m 32s) Kevin:
- Okay, oh, okay.
(28m 33s) Al:
of the game so yeah i’ve got I have a lot a lot that i’m gonna need to talk about this game um in
(28m 40s)
the future but yeah i’m gonna need a lot and not a lot more oh here here’s something I really really
(28m 45s)
annoyed me today it costs stamina to pick up items
(28m 48s)
and you know how some farming games if you don’t have the stamina it just doesn’t let you do anything
(28m 49s) Kevin:
- Oh, yeah!
(28m 58s) Al:
but in some games it lets you do it and then you pass out I i much prefer the ones where it just
(29m) Kevin:
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure, yeah.
(29m 4s) Al:
doesn’t let you do the thing right um but the thing is that harvest moon obsesses over we’re not going to
(29m 10s)
tell you exactly how much stamina we have you’ve got hearts and and you
(29m 15s)
are the amount of stamina you have is these four hearts is what you start off with and it slowly
(29m 20s)
decreases so you’re sitting there going like okay but how much do I actually have can I do another
(29m 25s)
thing or not or am I going to pass out so it’s like your heart has this little sliver and you’re
(29m 29s)
like is that one is that two is that four I don’t know am I able to do anything else so yeah I was
(29m 36s)
out adventuring and I i picked up something and I died and I dropped half of my inventory
(29m 43s) Kevin:
Oh, stick, they make you lose your inventory.
(29m 50s) Al:
so I feel like this game is less because this this this game is much more becoming rune factory
(29m 55s)
than it is harvest moon now I think which is not really what I want you can get attacked by wolves
(30m) Kevin:
I don’t think they do either.
(30m 3s) Al:
in this game it’s I just I don’t I don’t know what they’re doing and I don’t know I need like
(30m 12s)
is anybody enjoying this i’m gonna have to look at um I don’t want to do it before I do the podcast
(30m 17s)
episode on it but I’m going to have to look at
(30m 20s)
other people’s opinions
(30m 21s)
on this and look at the Metacritic and stuff
(30m 24s)
like that and see if do people actually like
(30m 26s)
this? Am I just the odd one out
(30m 28s)
here? But yeah
(30m 29s)
I need more
(30m 31s)
time to decide exactly how I don’t like this
(30m 34s)
game but suffice to say
(30m 35s)
so far I don’t like this game
(30m 38s) Kevin:
that well man harvest moon is wild because I feel like uh we almost all kind of cheer for you know
(30m 45s)
want to see it succeed because I mean I know they took the name and whatever but they’re trying their
(30m 50s)
own thing but it’s just oh it’s it’s crazy and and the like the the variance in their games is is
(30m 58s)
just crazy to me um you know the quality like sometimes I have a decent idea I mean then i
(31m 5s)
executed but they
(31m 5s)
don’t refine it
(31m 6s)
they just switch
(31m 8s) Al:
the thing I this is the thing I really really liked home sweet home it had its problems but i
(31m 13s)
really liked it and then they’ve just gone nah none of that big world big exploration world
(31m 25s) Kevin:
um that really is uh wow looking forward to that and i’m looking forward to the episode uh because
(31m 33s)
that’s a micah episode I didn’t even have to look at our you know behind the scenes stuff I knew
(31m 37s) Al:
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
(31m 37s) Kevin:
I know it’s the domain of micah um good stuff looking looking forward to hear that uh thank
(31m 45s)
you for suffering for the show as always that’s oh man um
(31m 48s) Al:
yeah let’s see let’s see how much time I can I can actually play it for
(31m 54s)
that’s what we’ve been up to all right let’s go into some news so because this is one of these
Game Releases
(32m 3s) Al:
big news episodes i’m going to split it up into sections we’ve got game releases we’ve got game
(32m 7s)
updates we’ve got other and then we’ve got new games there’s only one new game but i’m making
(32m 12s)
it its own section anyway because it doesn’t fit I mean I guess I could leave it another but no i
(32m 16s)
don’t want
(32m 16s)
to.
(32m 18s)
Let’s start
(32m 18s)
up with the
(32m 18s)
game releases.
Hammer And Harvest: Dwarven Roots
(32m 20s) Al:
First up,
(32m 20s)
Hammer and
(32m 21s)
Harvest,
(32m 21s)
Dwarven Roots.
(32m 23s)
Their
(32m 23s)
Kickstarter
(32m 24s)
failed.
(32m 26s) Kevin:
Boo.
(32m 26s) Al:
Boo.
(32m 28s)
They have
(32m 29s)
said that
(32m 30s)
they are going
(32m 30s)
to continue
(32m 31s)
working on
(32m 31s)
the game.
(32m 32s)
They are
(32m 34s)
going to
(32m 34s)
reduce the
(32m 35s)
scope of
(32m 35s)
the game
(32m 36s)
and hopefully
(32m 37s)
that means
(32m 38s)
they’ve said
(32m 38s)
that they
(32m 38s)
will plan
(32m 39s)
to release
(32m 40s)
earlier because
(32m 41s)
of that,
(32m 41s)
presumably,
(32m 42s)
because then
(32m 42s)
get some
(32m 44s)
money with
(32m 44s)
the sale.
(32m 45s)
So, yeah,
(32m 46s)
sad that they
(32m 48s)
get funded.
(32m 49s)
It looks like
(32m 49s)
they hit maybe
(32m 50s)
about a third
(32m 51s)
of their goal
(32m 52s)
if I’m looking
(32m 52s)
at that percentage
(32m 54s)
bar.
(32m 56s)
Yes, I can just
(32m 57s)
look at the
(32m 57s)
numbers.
(32m 58s)
Yes, it’s
(32m 58s)
slightly over a
(32m 59s)
third.
(33m 1s)
So, yeah,
(33m 4s)
sad, but it
(33m 5s)
is what it is.
(33m 6s)
Hopefully, they
(33m 6s)
managed to
(33m 7s)
actually release
(33m 9s)
a game and
(33m 10s)
it’s good.
(33m 11s)
We shall see.
(33m 12s) Kevin:
I do think that’s pretty cool that they’re still going to try to go for it because I don’t think you see that very frequently and understandably, like, you know, you need the money, but deciding, you know, OK, we’re going to go smaller and go for it.
(33m 16s) Al:
Yeah.
(33m 18s)
Yeah.
(33m 26s) Kevin:
I think that’s admirable. You know, ideally, I think we all could see if it does well, if it comes out and does well, then maybe they’ll keep going and add to it later on and get the full scope later.
(33m 37s) Al:
I think that’s that’s that’s the idea yeah so I think it’s a very clever way of doing it is if you know you can get a you know if you’ve got a certain amount of time that you’ve got your own funds for being able to get something out in that time and hopefully people like it enough to to pay for it and and then fund the rest of it that would be that would be.
(33m 39s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(33m 56s)
Okay, I’ll keep an eye on, I’ll support it, maybe not early access, but if they come out with something, yeah, I’ll be down.
Usagi Shima
(34m 7s) Al:
next up usagi shima have announced that their steam release is coming out on the 29th of october
(34m 13s)
and they have also released an faq for the steam release they have said that they’re not going to
(34m 20s)
they’ve not got save copy from mobile so you can’t copy over your save but they might do that in the
(34m 26s)
future they want they want people to come to the game fresh with a fresh save people will have
(34m 31s) Kevin:
I think that’s fair.
(34m 32s) Al:
different opinions on that
(34m 33s)
but I guess if you don’t want
(34m 35s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(34m 37s) Al:
to do that then wait for them to
(34m 39s)
you know release it and don’t buy
(34m 42s)
the game assuming that they will
(34m 43s)
wait for it to happen as as I say
(34m 46s)
regularly don’t buy a game based on
(34m 48s)
what it might be buy a game based on
(34m 49s)
what it is
(34m 50s)
they’ve also said there’s going to be
(34m 50s) Kevin:
Mm-hmm, 100%.
(34m 53s) Al:
no cross-platform play however there’s
(34m 56s)
going to be no ads and no
(34m 57s)
microtransactions the mobile game has
(35m)
microtransactions there’s not going to
(35m 1s)
be any of those you just buy the game
(35m 3s)
outright and the game is basically the
(35m 5s)
same except obviously some
(35m 7s)
additional PC features,
(35m 8s)
key bindings and stuff like that.
(35m 11s) Kevin:
Yeah, so yeah, okay, you reminded me of what I was going to say. What does cross-platform play mean here? Did this thing have multiplayer? I don’t remember that. Yeah, I was very mystified by that. Regardless, I mean, I wasn’t expecting.
(35m 22s) Al:
I can’t remember.
(35m 24s)
That’s a good question.
(35m 29s)
Yeah, I don’t think there was any multiplayer or anything.
(35m 32s)
So, yeah, I’m not sure what…
(35m 33s)
Maybe they’re just meaning in general multiplayer.
(35m 36s) Kevin:
I guess.
(35m 37s)
Yeah, because it’s just like collecting the bunnies, basically, right?
(35m 40s) Al:
Yeah.
(35m 40s) Kevin:
Building it up, kind of like Bocopia style.
(35m 42s) Al:
Yeah, I don’t…
(35m 43s)
Oh, maybe what they mean is like automatic,
(35m 47s)
like being able to play on the computer
(35m 49s)
and then immediately switch to the mobile
(35m 52s)
so there’s obviously there’s two different things here
(35m 54s)
which is being able to just like one time
(35m 56s)
copy your save over from mobile
(35m 58s)
which they’ve said they’re not got just now
(36m)
but they might do in the future
(36m 1s)
and then there’s being able to like
(36m 3s)
regularly switch between devices with the same save.
(36m 6s)
That is a whole different thing
(36m 7s)
so maybe that’s what they’re talking about.
(36m 9s) Kevin:
Yeah, that makes sense.
(36m 9s) Al:
That would be cross-platform.
(36m 10s)
I’m just assuming that’s what they mean
(36m 11s) Kevin:
Okay.
(36m 12s) Al:
but I think that would be the only thing
(36m 14s)
that would make sense to me.
(36m 15s) Kevin:
I agree, and I think that’s fine.
(36m 17s) Al:
I agree.
(36m 19s)
I’m glad we are in agreement.
(36m 21s)
Next up…
Meadgard
(36m 22s) Al:
Meadguards have said that their early access is coming on the 5th of November.
(36m 26s)
Remember, remember the 5th of November.
(36m 28s) Kevin:
There you go.
(36m 29s) Al:
They’ve also got a demo out now as well.
(36m 34s) Kevin:
That is early access, so probably not.
(36m 39s)
I’m just not a big early access guy.
(36m 41s)
Looks great, though, all things considered.
(36m 44s)
They’d say there is a demo, so I may try the demo, and that may sway me.
(36m 48s) Al:
yeah I think this might this might be a demo this might be a demo game maybe we need to get some
(36m 49s) Kevin:
Probably not.
(36m 50s)
I’ll try the demo.
(36m 52s) Al:
demos done before the end of the year and our final release news is out and about they have
(36m 54s) Kevin:
Yeah, yeah.
Out And About
(37m) Al:
announced that their 1.0 is now going to be coming out in 2027 they have said we’ve made the tough
(37m 6s)
call to delay our 1.0 release cooking turned out to be a much bigger feature than we expected which
(37m 11s)
meant we haven’t been able to move on to other important features and improvements yet we’d
(37m 16s)
rather take the extra time than rush them
(37m 18s)
we also wanted our team to be able to truly switch off over christmas without a launch looming
(37m 22s)
and to-do list on their minds releasing early next year means everyone can enjoy the holidays
(37m 26s)
and come back well rested ready to give you and us the one point
(37m 32s) Kevin:
Sounds good.
(37m 32s)
I will be honest.
(37m 34s)
I thought this game was already at 1.0.
(37m 37s) Al:
The good news, they say,
(37m 38s)
is that the cooking update
(37m 40s)
along with PhotoQuest and Achievements
(37m 42s)
will be coming as an update in November.
(37m 44s)
It was going to be coming as the 1.0.
(37m 47s)
It will now be coming as…
(37m 48s)
So you will still be getting those features
(37m 49s)
before the end of the year,
(37m 51s)
but the other stuff for 1.0
(37m 53s)
will not be coming till next year.
(37m 54s) Kevin:
All right, good stuff.
(37m 55s)
I mean, overall, you know, I think we all advocate work-life balance.
(37m 59s)
So good for them.
(38m) Al:
absolutely all right time for some game updates first up very small one but i’m only talking
Game Updates
(38m 6s) Al:
about this because I care about it and this is moonlight peaks have released their 1.3.9 update
Moonlight Peaks
(38m 11s) Al:
finally moonshine mana wine and juice sell prices have been increased back to what they were before
(38m 19s)
patch 1.2.3 it has been reversed all our wine is back to being good money finally
(38m 22s) Kevin:
yay
(38m 27s)
it always makes me laugh
(38m 28s) Al:
Bye.
(38m 30s)
I know, I know, it’s so silly, it’s so silly.
(38m 30s) Kevin:
whenever a single player game
(38m 32s)
they try regulating the economy
(38m 33s)
looking at you animal crossing nerf
(38m 40s)
that turnip market
(38m 41s) Al:
Because this is the thing, if you want to change, if you want to balance things in a single player game, don’t decrease any prices, increase other prices, because that’s just, just, just do that.
(38m 53s)
Like, if you really care. And also, I don’t know why you care, because the thing is, to actually get advantage of the wine being so expensive.
(39m)
You have to have had a lot of money in the first place to be paying for all of your seeds and paying for all of your kegs to make the wine.
(39m 7s) Kevin:
yeah just like
(39m 7s) Al:
It just means that the end game is faster. It doesn’t make the early or middle game faster.
(39m 8s) Kevin:
yeah I agree it’s just like
(39m 14s)
the real world shocker
(39m 18s) Al:
Hmm, you got to spend money to make money. You got to make money to make money.
(39m 23s)
There’s a whole bunch of other improvements and fixes as well.
(39m 30s)
Just amused by, participants of the Moonlight Ball now wear appropriate clothing.
(39m 34s)
Just amused. I’m guessing they were just wearing their normal clothes, but yeah, I like the idea of them wearing inappropriate clothing.
(39m 35s) Kevin:
What were they wearing before?
(39m 43s)
yeah
(39m 44s) Al:
I think they just mean, like, related to the event clothing, rather than, like, they’re now actually wearing clothes.
(39m 50s) Kevin:
yeah
(39m 54s) Al:
So, there we go.
(39m 56s)
Speaking of game updates, Carl, that was the most pointless.
(40m)
segway ever, because we’re in the game updates section.
Coral Island
(40m 2s) Al:
Coral Island, first up, have announced that their Switch 2 version will be coming this winter.
(40m 8s)
Alongside the 1.4 update, kids grow up.
(40m 12s)
Kids grow up.
(40m 14s)
Sometimes they do.
(40m 15s) Kevin:
What is the update now?
(40m 15s) Al:
Sometimes they die.
(40m 18s)
Sorry.
(40m 24s)
Arriving together with the Nintendo Switch 2 release, update 1.4 brings new milestones, cutscenes, and interactions.
(40m 30s)
As your children grow older and develop their own interests.
(40m 33s)
There are four stages as your children grow up.
(40m 35s)
Baby, toddler, school age, and teenager.
(40m 38s)
At the school age stage, they will be around the same age as the current NPC kids.
(40m 42s)
Oh, that’s going to be really weird then, because your kids will grow older than the kids that have been around since the beginning of the game.
(40m 48s) Kevin:
I’ll get to that. Don’t worry. Go ahead. Keep going.
(40m 53s) Al:
A new cutscene, inspired by Tedak Sittin, a Javanese tradition many of our developers grew up with, the ceremony.
(41m)
And he celebrates a child’s first steps onto the ground, symbolizing an important milestone in their growth and journey through life.
(41m 7s)
Watch your child grow.
(41m 8s)
There’s a whole bunch more blurb here, but you’ve got four bullet points.
(41m 11s)
Watch your kids grow.
(41m 12s)
Help shape their future.
(41m 13s)
Develop a new side of your spouse.
(41m 16s)
And, oh, there you go.
(41m 17s)
Kevin’s already read through this article.
(41m 18s)
Watch the neighbourhood kids grow up.
(41m 21s)
Your children aren’t the only ones growing older.
(41m 23s)
The other kids in Starlet Town, including familiar faces like Archie, will grow into teenagers too, get to know them as they enter a new stage of life.
(41m 30s)
Now, I notice that they’re going to stop at teenagers, that sounds like.
(41m 36s)
They’re not actually going to grow into adults, which is probably a good decision, because otherwise there will be people who will want to date the children once they grow up, which you know people are going to ask for if that’s what happens.
(41m 41s) Kevin:
Yep
(41m 41s)
Yep
(41m 46s)
Yep
(41m 49s) Al:
And that just gets a bit weird then.
(41m 50s) Kevin:
Yep
(41m 52s)
Yep
(41m 53s) Al:
Weird like some people are weird in real life.
(41m 55s) Kevin:
Okay I have thoughts
(41m 58s)
Kids in games
(42m 2s)
Are hard tasks
(42m 4s)
For some reason
(42m 4s)
Like as a mechanic
(42m 6s)
I guess because it’s a lot to consider and do
(42m 9s) Al:
Yes, because I guess the big one that did that
(42m 11s)
would have been A Wonderful Life.
(42m 11s) Kevin:
That’s correct
(42m 13s)
There are two games
(42m 15s)
In my opinion that have ever
(42m 17s)
That I’ve played at least that have
(42m 18s)
Done kids in a good way
(42m 21s)
Let’s say that enjoyable or meaningful
(42m 23s)
Sensible way
(42m 24s)
Yes the first one is A Wonderful Life
(42m 26s)
Because that is
(42m 28s)
Again the point of it
(42m 30s)
Life going on but you
(42m 32s)
And everyone else also ages
(42m 34s)
Which is a big issue
(42m 36s) Al:
And no, it does not look like it.
(42m 37s) Kevin:
Of mine because I don’t think that’s happening
(42m 39s)
Here and that’s a big issue
(42m 41s)
No
(42m 43s)
Like they say okay
(42m 45s)
Your spouse is gonna talk more
(42m 46s)
About parenthood and stuff like that
(42m 48s)
Which is nice
(42m 48s)
But people should be physically aging
(42m 52s)
15 years
(42m 53s)
You know for a kid to become a teenager
(42m 55s)
Whatever that’s
(42m 56s)
A sizable amount of time
(42m 58s)
People change in that time
(42m 59s) Al:
There are people in the game who probably shouldn’t still be alive by that point.
(42m 59s) Kevin:
That is correct
(43m 3s)
And A Wonderful Life
(43m 5s)
Does exactly that
(43m 6s)
There are people who pass away
(43m 8s)
a lot of the village
(43m 9s)
grows old
(43m 11s)
all the stuff
(43m 12s)
which
(43m 14s)
okay
(43m 15s)
that in my opinion
(43m 16s)
is how you do it
(43m 17s)
if you’re gonna go
(43m 17s)
all in with time passing
(43m 19s)
make time pass
(43m 20s)
for everyone
(43m 21s)
because it feels weird
(43m 24s)
that the kids
(43m 25s)
are in a time
(43m 26s)
vacuum thing
(43m 27s)
like just them
(43m 28s) Al:
well yeah I also wonder it doesn’t I don’t see anything about how long it takes as well
(43m 29s) Kevin:
growing
(43m 29s)
I don’t know
(43m 33s) Al:
it’s probably not going to take the normal amount of time right which is
(43m 37s) Kevin:
Yeah, you’re probably not going to play 15 in your games to reach that point.
(43m 37s) Al:
which is why it then gets it gets weirder right because then they’ve gone
(43m 44s)
probably in most a couple of years they’ve gone from not existing to a teenager
(43m 48s) Kevin:
Yeah, that’s correct, which is weird.
(43m 49s) Al:
but you have like I think it’s weird when you have real time like it’s it’s not like just an
(43m 55s)
amorphous thing
(43m 56s)
where you’re just
(43m 56s)
things happen right
(43m 58s)
it’s a yearly
(43m 59s)
game
(44m)
they have
(44m 1s)
a calendar
(44m 2s)
yeah
(44m 3s) Kevin:
yep and again a wonderful life does all this but they do time skips they reach a point where it
(44m 10s)
fast forwards x number of years and everything has changed now there’s new people in town people
(44m 15s)
have aged there may be buildings have changed even uh and they’re not doing that which it just makes
(44m 21s)
it all weird and takes away from the experience for me so that’s frustrating uh the other game
(44m 27s)
that got away with kids uh is fire emblem awakening are you familiar with
(44m 32s) Al:
I was not expecting that now remind me this is the uh uh the what’s it called the the turn-based
(44m 33s) Kevin:
uh with how that
(44m 40s) Al:
combat or what’s it what’s the what what’s what’s the game that is like um the
(44m 42s) Kevin:
that is correct that is correct yeah strategy xeno uh uh no gosh with the shooter alien game
(44m 47s) Al:
x-com yes that’s what I was that’s the word I was looking for so this is the x-com style game right
(44m 51s) Kevin:
x xcom uh yes yes yes yes yeah grid based super chest strategies that is correct yes and you’re
(44m 56s) Al:
ha ha ha ha ha
(45m) Kevin:
right it wouldn’t be what you expect but they did it they knocked out of the park but it’s a fantasy
(45m 5s)
magic world so they use some fantasy magic to go with it so how how kids in that game works is
(45m 12s)
this there is support uh what they call support basically relationships between your different
(45m 17s)
units and characters uh and there’s a large number of people that if you pair them up together they
(45m 23s)
will result in offspring but you don’t have the kids as babies what happens is the one of the
(45m 30s)
focuses of the game and the plot is time travel shenanigans um where things go very bad in the
(45m 35s) Al:
Oh, okay.
(45m 36s) Kevin:
future and the kids time travel into the past to help save the future so
(45m 40s) Al:
Oh!
(45m 41s)
It’s a cable situation.
(45m 42s) Kevin:
uh-huh that’s exactly what it is and so your different kids uh their appearance and their
(45m 49s)
stats and their capabilities will depend on the parents that you select for them
(45m 53s)
um like obviously you know the mother will stick with the kid but that’s correct
(45m 55s) Al:
interesting so so so you you like match people up and then they have babies and then their babies
(46m) Kevin:
that is exactly how it works um it’s it is
(46m 2s) Al:
come back from the future to join your team that’s genius I actually love that that’s so clever
(46m 10s)
yeah
(46m 12s) Kevin:
it’s great it’s fantastic and like I said it’s central to the plot and the mechanics it works
(46m 16s)
brilliantly um the only like kind of weird thing is like you the titular character because the the
(46m 24s)
all the children return or come to the past as adults basically um you can end up dating one of
(46m 30s)
the kids which is a little kind of weird but you know they never saw them as kids I guess um but uh
(46m 33s) Al:
yeah yeah I think it’s probably a little bit i’m not i’m not it’s it’s weird it is weird
(46m 41s)
but yeah I think it’s probably less weird when you haven’t actively seen them grow up
(46m 46s) Kevin:
yes yes and also like they give you a little more justification like you’re a weird character
(46m 51s)
in yourself like you’re nonsense and there’s time shenanigans too i’ll go into it
(46m 52s) Al:
don’t worry don’t worry guys it’s not weird you’re just a pedo
(46m 56s) Kevin:
anyways uh look and here’s the thing out like I don’t know if you’re familiar with the characters
(47m 6s)
um from smash but lucina uh are you familiar with lucina
(47m 10s)
blue haired girl with sword yes she is
(47m 11s) Al:
remind myself yes yes I am aware is she not the one that’s like is she not the one that’s like um
(47m 16s) Kevin:
one of the she is like the titular he’s like the only required child
(47m 19s)
uh not necessarily you might be thinking of a different character i’m not sure
(47m 21s) Al:
like bonded with another character or something is that a different is that a different character
(47m 29s) Kevin:
um but uh she uh she’s actually like the all the children in awakening are optional except
(47m 37s)
she will show up as part of the plot because she is the other main character uh crom
(47m 41s)
she’s her kid um anyway so um uh
(47m 46s)
anyways awakening does children great uh one and you know again they use the weird shortcut of magic
(47m 51s)
and time travel and all that but it’s appropriate for the setting um so it works well but uh going
(47m 57s)
back to this game uh yeah I don’t like where okay you’re gonna do kids and you’re gonna age them up
(48m 4s)
but nothing else is changing that’s I don’t like that you gotta you gotta work around it and if
(48m 9s)
you’re not gonna do it then give me the weird time travel story I guess uh oh man but uh but yeah i
(48m 16s)
i’m not i’m not a big it’s hard it’s hard because it’s a big prime gap for kids to grow up and
(48m 21s)
things should change and you’re not going to do all that work or work around it appropriately don’t
(48m 26s)
don’t do it in my opinion uh
(48m 28s) Al:
Yeah. Yeah. I think the, the interesting thing is,
(48m 31s)
is obviously it’s been more work than they were expecting. Cause like,
(48m 34s)
it’s, it’s a lot later than they were planning for this to come out. Um,
(48m 38s)
and, and then, yeah, it still seems a bit, you know, yeah, I, I just,
(48m 43s)
I feel like I know it’s a lot more work to make everybody age up,
(48m 47s)
but also like that’s, is that not better? Um, just in general,
(48m 53s)
I always like, I’ve never played it. I’ve never played a wonderful life,
(48m 56s)
But I always liked the idea that…
(48m 58s)
You can, you know, continue on the game as your child.
(49m 1s)
Like, I like that idea of the continuation of the legacy.
(49m 2s) Kevin:
Yeah, yeah.
(49m 7s) Al:
It’s an interesting idea that I really wish another farming game would do.
(49m 12s)
Because I just, I mean, A Wonderful Life is, you know, when it was created, it ended up being like every game has to be 3D.
(49m 20s)
And I just, as we’ve discussed before, I’m just not a huge fan of that.
(49m 25s)
And I don’t like playing farming games in that style.
(49m 28s) Kevin:
or where you want to top down everything.
(49m 29s) Al:
And so I just, I would, it’s not that it has to be top-down everything.
(49m 34s)
And it doesn’t have to be the exact same style or anything.
(49m 37s)
It’s just, I think the way that farming game works best, especially because so much of it is grid-based.
(49m 43s)
It just works better like that.
(49m 45s)
But, so I kind of wish there was a game that is more like how I would enjoy playing that also does that idea.
(49m 53s)
But I’ve not really, not really found one.
(49m 56s) Kevin:
yeah I agree and it’s weird because they say you’re like okay influence how your kid’s going
(50m 1s)
to grow up which is again something a wonderful life does but it’s kind of central to it because
(50m 6s)
one of the key things or questions is your kid going to you know in it want to inherit the farm
(50m 12s)
and keep working at it uh which I think is like you said it’s very cool to see it continue or not
(50m 13s) Al:
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah well because because that’s because that’s the thing because
(50m 18s) Kevin:
right and how you influence that uh so yeah they’re but you’re not going to get that fully
(50m 25s) Al:
in so many of these games you are actively choosing to do the farm as well right like that that and
(50m 26s) Kevin:
yeah that’s correct
(50m 31s) Al:
and yeah the the idea of like the existential questions of what is it that my children will
(50m 37s)
enjoy and will my children enjoy the same things as me and if they don’t that’s good
(50m 43s)
as well because that’s who they are and obviously the game can then be even more existential in
(50m 50s)
thinking like how much of this character is because of how i’ve raised them and how much is because they
(50m 56s)
were always going to be that way and I think there’s a lot of interesting ideas that can be
(50m 58s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(51m 1s) Al:
addressed there and and Coral Island is not going to touch any of that
(51m 2s) Kevin:
Absolutely.
(51m 5s) Al:
like i’m sorry i’m i’m sorry maybe i’m being harsh but the
(51m 5s) Kevin:
No, not at all.
(51m 8s)
Not with the yardstick.
(51m 13s) Al:
game where the 1.0 when you married someone they became a husk of themselves living in their house
(51m 18s)
um I i don’t trust them with actually dealing with this properly
(51m 19s) Kevin:
yeah and this is the thing you know i’ll give them the grace at least it’s not just them like
(51m 28s)
this is why we complain about a lot of relationship mechanics because it’s it’s hard it’s a lot it’s
(51m 31s) Al:
Yeah.
(51m 33s)
It is.
(51m 34s) Kevin:
a big significant part of human experience and if you’re not going to put in the work to address it
(51m 41s)
or you know make it deep and rich and meaningful then just don’t put it in uh especially like going
(51m 49s)
like this with kids like okay you want to date someone and maybe do the ceremony get married
(51m 52s)
draw the line there don’t don’t go to kids if you’re not going to answer start exploring all
(51m 57s) Al:
yeah it treats a lot a lot of them treat life like a series of things that everybody goes through
(51m 58s) Kevin:
the questions especially not farther like this
(52m 6s) Al:
and if it’s a checklist exactly and I think that far too often these things are not treated equally
(52m 7s) Kevin:
Yep, with the checklist.
(52m 15s) Al:
like I was talking to kelly about this in the last episode the idea that you could play a game
(52m 20s)
aromantically and still get the full experience of it I think is missing from a lot of these games
(52m 23s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(52m 25s) Al:
because they treated
(52m 27s)
as you start out
(52m 28s)
you build up your farm
(52m 29s)
you get to know someone
(52m 30s)
you start dating someone
(52m 32s)
you marry someone
(52m 32s)
you have kids
(52m 33s)
and that is just what you do
(52m 34s)
and you’ve not got
(52m 35s)
the full experience
(52m 36s)
just like a lot of people
(52m 37s)
think about life
(52m 38s)
they think you don’t have
(52m 39s)
the full experience of life
(52m 40s)
without these things
(52m 41s)
which is not right
(52m 42s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(52m 43s) Al:
you know
(52m 44s)
like
(52m 45s)
I
(52m 46s)
you know
(52m 47s)
not to say these things
(52m 48s)
can’t be amazing
(52m 49s)
they are
(52m 49s)
I love being married
(52m 51s)
I love my kids
(52m 52s)
but they’re not for everybody
(52m 54s)
well certainly my wife
(52m 55s) Kevin:
Nope.
(52m 55s) Al:
and my kids aren’t for everyone
(52m 57s)
for me
(52m 57s)
but like these
(52m 59s)
the idea that these things
(53m 1s)
are just part of life
(53m 3s)
and they’re not things
(53m 4s)
that people choose to do
(53m 5s)
because that’s what they want to do
(53m 7s)
because they have found
(53m 9s)
the person that makes them
(53m 10s)
want to do it
(53m 11s)
in some cases
(53m 11s)
and in some cases
(53m 12s)
there’s no person
(53m 13s)
that would make someone
(53m 14s)
want to do it
(53m 15s)
because they just
(53m 16s)
that’s not how they feel
(53m 17s)
about people in general
(53m 18s)
and sometimes people
(53m 20s)
never find that person
(53m 21s)
even though they want to
(53m 22s)
like that’s the other thing
(53m 24s)
is like people who want
(53m 25s)
these things
(53m 25s)
and can never experience them
(53m 27s)
like there’s just
(53m 28s)
life is more complicated
(53m 29s)
than these things
(53m 30s)
and the games
(53m 31s)
I think
(53m 32s)
we do a disservice
(53m 33s)
when we just
(53m 34s)
throw in this mechanic
(53m 36s)
like it’s just
(53m 37s)
a checkbox
(53m 38s) Kevin:
absolutely uh yeah I agree 100 and it’s interesting because I mean I know story of
(53m 46s)
seasons and harvest moon said a lot of this earlier but stardew is again kind of the
(53m 51s)
the real modern uh instigator of a lot of this I think or a lot of people
(53m 56s) Al:
Yeah, absolutely. No, I think I think you’re absolutely right. I think I think most people don’t look at Harvest Moon for these things. They look at Stardew for them. And I don’t I don’t think the Stardew was wrong in what it did. It’s just it’s 10 years old. Like we are so much further past that.
(53m 56s) Kevin:
look at that in comparison way yeah
(53m 59s)
yeah no yeah I agree um and so
(54m 8s)
yeah
(54m 11s)
yeah and what’s interesting is okay yes there’s the whole grandpa challenge um but aside from that
(54m 21s)
like I still think you can play it aromantically and get a lot out of stardew well I don’t think
(54m 26s) Al:
You can. Yeah. Yeah. I think the biggest thing is that there are a couple of achievements you can’t get if you don’t get married and have kids.
(54m 27s) Kevin:
there’s that much pressure
(54m 28s)
yeah exactly but that’s you know that’s uh that’s a almost a you thing right it’s it’s
(54m 38s)
not the game isn’t pressuring you and and and that’s just the thing like when you look at
(54m 38s) Al:
Yes. Oh, sure. Sure. Sure. Absolutely.
(54m 44s) Kevin:
this coral island like it does feel like there’s I don’t know some more pressure or whatever I don’t
(54m 48s)
know it just they’re trying to make it feel like it’s a bit more mandatory than it should be but um
(54m 53s)
but yeah I agree with everything you
(54m 55s) Al:
There were 20 years between the first Harvest Moon releasing and Stardew releasing, and now
(54m 59s)
it’s 10 years since Stardew released.
(55m 1s) Kevin:
That’s wild.
(55m 2s)
I’m just like it should pass in this game, but you’re not doing it.
(55m 7s)
Oh, island.
(55m 10s) Al:
Well, look, I mean, maybe this will be the thing that will get me back into Coral Island
(55m 14s)
and actually try out all the updates since they’ve been releasing them, because I never
(55m 20s) Kevin:
I’ve kind of been wanting to, even though the whole Game of the Year thing really makes me laugh.
(55m 27s)
But it does look good, and I like the character design, so I’m not good.
(55m 28s) Al:
look look look look I don’t regret giving it game of the year or did we give a game of the year
(55m 35s)
I can’t remember whether no I don’t oh yeah I don’t regret arguing for it and I don’t think
(55m 36s) Kevin:
No, we didn’t. That’s a thing. We gave it to Maneka.
(55m 42s) Al:
that mine echo shouldn’t have got game of the year I do think that I probably talked about
(55m 46s)
car island more positively than I now think about not to say that it’s bad but just I at the time
(55m 53s)
said I think it’s the best farming game ever
(55m 55s)
but however I did
(55m 58s)
clarify that with I think
(55m 59s)
we’ll need to see how it continues
(56m 1s)
and how I
(56m 3s)
get back into things
(56m 6s)
and the fact that now
(56m 7s) Kevin:
Yeah, no, that’s fair.
(56m 8s) Al:
multiple years later I’ve still never got
(56m 9s)
back to it I think does
(56m 14s) Kevin:
But like I said, I’m interested too, so maybe we’ll do a second harvest
(56m 18s)
and maybe that’ll motivate you to give it a shot too. We’ll see.
(56m 22s)
But we shall see.
(56m 22s) Al:
shall see I suspect that’ll be next year I don’t think that’ll be this year i’ve already got so
(56m 26s) Kevin:
Probably not. We have…
(56m 27s) Al:
many games scheduled for this year
(56m 29s)
it’s nine only two weeks and then you’ll be playing village in the shade so
(56m 30s) Kevin:
Oh my gosh, I need to play more farming games if we’re going to reflect on…
(56m 34s)
okay
(56m 37s)
gotta get
(56m 37s)
on that
(56m 42s) Al:
all right farlands have released version 1.1 um it has updates to the quests
Farlands
(56m 52s) Al:
system and uh that’s that’s that’s about it
(56m 56s)
they did have they did have quests before but they’ve they’ve they’ve changed how it works i
(56m 56s) Kevin:
Congrats! You can now do
(56m 58s)
quests for people.
(57m 4s) Al:
think and they’ve made it more obvious and they’ve added more for like the early game and stuff like
(57m 8s)
that I think is what they’re saying unless i’ve misread it but yeah no I mean this is good I like
(57m 13s) Kevin:
Yeah, no, it looks good.
(57m 14s) Al:
I like tasks I like quests uh yeah more please um they’ve they’ve also released uh a list of
(57m 22s)
other updates that will be coming they have uh farm machines and processing they have animal
(57m 27s)
automation they have two new romancible characters and character customization um they have not said
(57m 34s)
whether those are different updates or they’re just these are just features that they will be bringing
(57m 38s)
at some point um but yeah
(57m 40s) Kevin:
their roadmap uh yeah I mean all that sounds like standard fare so good for you keep working on it
(57m 46s) Al:
Yep.
(57m 48s)
Do I own this game?
(57m 50s)
No, I do not.
(57m 51s)
Do I want this game?
(57m 51s) Kevin:
I don’t it’s 18 it’s not bad should I play this
(57m 52s) Al:
Maybe.
(57m 54s)
It’s got very positive reviews.
(57m 59s)
Yes.
Star Birds
(58m) Al:
Next up, speaking of games you shouldn’t play.
(58m 4s) Kevin:
yeah
(58m 4s) Al:
No, that’s, that is, no, that is, that is much harsher
(58m 5s) Kevin:
yeah it’s funny
(58m 7s) Al:
than I want it to be.
(58m 9s)
Starbirds.
(58m 10s) Kevin:
I disagree completely
(58m 11s)
kind of
(58m 12s) Al:
I, I don’t, well, so I don’t, oh, goodness.
(58m 12s) Kevin:
right
(58m 15s) Al:
I have such mixed feelings
(58m 16s) Kevin:
me too
(58m 16s) Al:
about this game it’s so this is starbirds they’ve released their antimatter update it has antimatter
(58m 22s)
and explosions okay that’s the update great fantastic I just I feel so disappointed by this
(58m 28s)
game because of how I felt it could be and it just ended up being like a jigsaw puzzle essentially
(58m 34s)
we are we are but I’m I can be frustrated still about it I want this game to be great because
(58m 35s) Kevin:
I mean, we’re just rehashing what we talked about in the episode, but I mean, everything it is.
(58m 43s) Al:
It looks gorgeous and I love the people who make it.
(58m 46s)
Their videos are great in general, and I feel like they could have done something, they could have done, it does, it plays well. Everything about it is theoretically fine and good. It’s just, I’m not feeling like there’s a reason to play it other than just because it’s there. It’s just very frustrating.
(58m 48s) Kevin:
It plays well.
(59m 4s)
the very rare case of
(59m 6s)
a game, especially being less than
(59m 8s)
the sum of its parts.
(59m 9s) Al:
Yes, absolutely. It’s just so frustrating. I want this game to be good.
(59m 13s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(59m 15s)
Yeah.
(59m 16s)
It’s still in early access
(59m 18s)
technically, which I guess is a sliver
(59m 20s)
of hope, but
(59m 21s)
it’s…
(59m 22s) Al:
I don’t think so.
(59m 23s) Kevin:
Oh, is it?
(59m 23s) Al:
I think because this is the last update before the 1.0.
(59m 26s) Kevin:
I didn’t realize that. Never mind it!
(59m 26s) Al:
Yeah.
(59m 29s) Kevin:
Darn it!
(59m 30s)
Still looks great.
(59m 31s) Al:
But they have said that the 1.0 is coming next year,
(59m 33s)
so you don’t get it for the draft.
(59m 34s) Kevin:
No, well, we’ll see.
(59m 34s) Al:
Sorry, Kevin.
(59m 36s)
You can draft it next year, though.
(59m 36s) Kevin:
I’ve…
(59m 37s)
Yeah, I’ve got…
(59m 39s)
I’ve got…
(59m 41s) Al:
You’ve got to start thinking about that now.
(59m 43s) Kevin:
Oh, gosh.
(59m 45s)
This experience, the whole draft
(59m 48s)
has been so traumatizing. I’m not ready for
(59m 50s) Al:
Oh, it’s been so much fun.
(59m 50s) Kevin:
next year.
(59m 52s) Al:
Don’t lie.
(59m 52s) Kevin:
It’s so much…
(59m 54s)
See, what the listeners don’t know
(59m 56s) Al:
You’re, you’re intact.
(59m 56s) Kevin:
is the chat we have.
(59m 57s) Al:
All of your hope is,
(59m 58s)
all of your hope is now on Petite Planet, right?
(1h 1s)
That is, that is your only chance of winning now.
(1h 4s) Kevin:
It’s not coming out.
(1h 5s)
It’s done.
(1h 6s) Al:
It’s probably not coming out.
(1h 6s) Kevin:
We’re not getting Petite Planet.
(1h 7s) Al:
It’s probably not coming out.
(1h 7s) Kevin:
No.
(1h 9s)
No.
(1h 10s) Al:
Well, you know, it’s definitely not coming out.
(1h 12s)
It’s a new story of seasons game.
(1h 14s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 15s) Al:
I’m so disappointed because I feel like
(1h 16s) Kevin:
That…
(1h 16s)
That was a reasonable one, too.
(1h 17s) Al:
that would have been incredible of like,
(1h 20s)
well, cause I was looking back the last.
(1h 24s)
So looking at story of seasons games,
(1h 26s)
let me get my actual list up.
(1h 29s)
It has been so long.
(1h 31s)
We have had multiple remakes, right?
(1h 33s)
So last year we had grand bazaar in 2000,
(1h 37s)
in 2023, we had a wonderful life and it wasn’t bad.
(1h 40s)
It was, it’s been five years now since a brand new
(1h 44s)
story of seasons game pioneers in all of town,
(1h 48s)
Unless you count DeRay Munster, he’s interesting.
(1h 50s)
But that’s still four years.
(1h 52s)
That’s a long time.
(1h 53s)
Harvest Moon have released about thirty since then.
(1h 54s) Kevin:
It is.
(1h 57s)
Yeah, it’s kind of crazy to think about.
(1h 1m 1s)
But then again, story season is usually way better than Harvest Moon, so…
(1h 1m 4s) Al:
I agree no sure sure I agree I agree absolutely I do not disagree I just feel like why is it taking
(1h 1m 12s)
so long right I mean grand bazaar was great I really enjoyed it but it’s also not a new game
(1h 1m 19s)
I think is the thing right like I i and I i played it for the first time then but many people were
(1h 1m 21s) Kevin:
Yeah, no, that’s fair.
(1h 1m 27s) Al:
just replaying it so I don’t know it’s this constant difficult thing i’m not i’m not saying
(1h 1m 32s)
they must have had
(1h 1m 33s)
a new game out by now.
(1h 1m 34s)
I feel like saying one
(1h 1m 35s)
coming out five years
(1h 1m 36s)
after the previous one
(1h 1m 37s)
felt like a good guess.
(1h 1m 40s) Kevin:
Yeah, no, it was especially on the anniversary or whatever, you know, the 30th.
(1h 1m 42s) Al:
Especially on the anniversary!
(1h 1m 44s)
I can’t believe we’re not getting
(1h 1m 44s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 1m 45s) Al:
any game releases on the anniversary.
(1h 1m 47s)
That’s madness.
(1h 1m 47s) Kevin:
It’s kind of wild.
(1h 1m 48s) Al:
What’s this about?
(1h 1m 50s)
We didn’t even get a name
(1h 1m 51s)
of the next game.
(1h 1m 53s)
Unless you want to count
(1h 1m 53s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 1m 53s) Al:
the VR game.
(1h 1m 56s) Kevin:
Yeah, no, it is pretty wild.
(1h 1m 57s) Al:
All right.
Solarpunk
(1h 1m 58s) Al:
Next up,
(1h 1m 59s)
Solar Punk
(1h 2m)
have released their 1.3.1 update.
(1h 2m 4s)
It is out now.
(1h 2m 5s)
It adds cross-play
(1h 2m 6s)
because this is a multiplayer game.
(1h 2m 6s) Kevin:
That’s cool.
(1h 2m 8s) Al:
Also improved storage
(1h 2m 9s)
and character customization.
(1h 2m 11s) Kevin:
Those are good.
(1h 2m 12s) Al:
Those are good things.
(1h 2m 14s) Kevin:
Yep, it’s solar punks fine.
(1h 2m 16s)
It’s just, you know, checking all the boxes, but I’m sorry.
(1h 2m 17s) Al:
I just have
(1h 2m 20s)
I just have no draw
(1h 2m 22s)
to this game whatsoever.
(1h 2m 23s) Kevin:
I mean, either.
(1h 2m 24s)
I mean, that’s the problem.
(1h 2m 25s)
It looks fine, but in the ocean of other cottage core games,
(1h 2m 31s)
especially as we know about them, like what’s the draw I don’t see.
(1h 2m 36s) Al:
solar panels that’s the draw yeah they say we thank you for your patience and apologize for
(1h 2m 44s)
the long wait solar punk is still being developed by a very small team at the same time every update
(1h 2m 48s)
needs to work not only on steam but across all console versions of the game as well yeah that’s
(1h 2m 53s)
just called game development uh console releases updates will come later because you look if you’re
(1h 2m 56s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 3m 1s) Al:
console player, you know what
(1h 3m 4s)
you’re expecting. Come on.
Dragon Acres
(1h 3m 6s) Al:
Next up, Dragon Acres.
(1h 3m 8s)
Your dragons will now follow
(1h 3m 10s)
their own daily routines,
(1h 3m 12s)
all driven by the in-game clock.
(1h 3m 14s)
Whether you’re exploring, fishing at the beach,
(1h 3m 16s)
or spending the day away
(1h 3m 18s)
from the farm, life continues around you.
(1h 3m 21s) Kevin:
Look we we know this out, but but copy has ruined me like I just see this and like oh see it’s like
(1h 3m 26s) Al:
yeah yeah fair
(1h 3m 30s) Kevin:
Yeah, but um no this looks fine
(1h 3m 30s) Al:
also also that’s that’s like also like
(1h 3m 34s)
villagers in every farming game ever
(1h 3m 35s) Kevin:
Yeah, that’s it yes
(1h 3m 38s)
Which is cool
(1h 3m 39s)
Game’s not out. Yeah, that’s the problem like that. That sounds I like the look of this game
(1h 3m 44s)
I like the idea of having the dragon
(1h 3m 50s) Al:
oh yeah this isn’t actually an update whoopsie I thought this was an actual update nope
(1h 3m 52s) Kevin:
Yeah, we don’t have any
(1h 3m 53s) Al:
this is just a development update my bad
(1h 3m 57s) Kevin:
date or anything for it, so
(1h 3m 59s)
just good to know you’re doing
(1h 4m 1s)
what should be done.
Hello Kitty: Island Adventure
(1h 4m 3s) Al:
well kevin do you know what is out though the hello kitty the hello kitty island adventure
(1h 4m 4s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 4m 7s)
Wait, it’s out already?
(1h 4m 10s) Al:
welcome home update is out now oh boy there’s a lot in this update they say it’s their biggest
(1h 4m 15s)
free update ever you can have a new player home customize upgrade and create the home of your
(1h 4m 16s) Kevin:
I– go ahead.
(1h 4m 22s) Al:
dreams help your favorite sanrio play friends create homes of their very own and uncover a
(1h 4m 28s)
new friendship island mystery along the way plus expand your cabins with larger and
(1h 4m 33s)
more diverse shapes and sizes pack up save and share your cabin layouts and contents
(1h 4m 39s)
layouts and kits let you share your cabin designs with other players or easily move them from cabin
(1h 4m 46s)
to cabin they’ve also got creative mode room love decorating want to try out some new ideas like
(1h 4m 51s)
your imagination run wild and create your dream cabin using almost anything in the game floor and
(1h 4m 56s)
walls customization as well which I mean yeah I feel did the game not already have floor and walls
(1h 5m 1s)
customization.
(1h 5m 4s)
It has been too long, but
(1h 5m 5s)
yeah, a lot of
(1h 5m 6s)
a lot of changes.
(1h 5m 10s)
Also pocket rooms, you can
(1h 5m 11s)
have spaces.
(1h 5m 14s)
I think it’s just
(1h 5m 15s)
I think it’s just like how you walk into a house
(1h 5m 17s)
and it’s bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, but
(1h 5m 19s) Kevin:
yeah it’s look let’s just summarize it up it’s it’s happy home designer it’s the happy home
(1h 5m 19s) Al:
yeah.
(1h 5m 26s) Kevin:
designer because we look they say welcome home they’re riffing off welcome amiibo and happy
(1h 5m 26s) Al:
It’s happy. Yeah, yeah.
(1h 5m 30s)
Happy kitty. Happy
(1h 5m 31s)
hello designer.
(1h 5m 33s)
Hello.
(1h 5m 37s) Kevin:
home at the same time there you go look this game’s solid i’m not going to complain
(1h 5m 38s) Al:
Happy hello
(1h 5m 40s)
designer. Hello
(1h 5m 42s)
home. It’s a pun.
(1h 5m 46s) Kevin:
it introduced me to Sanrio
(1h 5m 47s)
I enjoy Pompa
(1h 5m 49s)
it looks solid
(1h 5m 51s)
and I will give them props
(1h 5m 53s)
it’s a free update
(1h 5m 55s)
it’s a pretty big one right
(1h 5m 57s)
I mean heck Animal Crossing charged
(1h 5m 59s)
for some of their updates like this
(1h 6m 1s)
so
(1h 6m 1s)
yeah and for the
(1h 6m 2s) Al:
well they yeah they are they they charge for happy home designer
(1h 6m 5s)
yeah which is just happy home designer
(1h 6m 7s) Kevin:
new Horizons DLC
(1h 6m 9s)
the island
(1h 6m 10s)
which is just happy on design
(1h 6m 12s) Al:
but also kevin we’ve got another thing to give them props for
(1h 6m 13s) Kevin:
that’s right
(1h 6m 18s) Al:
they have released the friends pass the hollow kitty island adventure friends pass which allows
(1h 6m 26s)
you to let a player who does not own the game play with you on your
(1h 6m 32s) Kevin:
GameShare is one of the coolest things Nintendo’s ever done,
(1h 6m 36s)
so good for you for introducing GameShare just for yours.
(1h 6m 40s) Al:
but this also seems to be um remote I don’t think it has to be just because like game share
(1h 6m 46s)
is just local right like you have to be together whereas I think this works over the internet
(1h 6m 48s) Kevin:
Yeah, it is.
(1h 6m 51s)
Ooh, dang.
(1h 6m 52s)
That’s crazy.
(1h 6m 53s)
That’s cool.
(1h 6m 54s) Al:
so yeah that’s cool you can you can play the entire game you can play the entire game with
(1h 6m 57s) Kevin:
That’s awesome.
(1h 6m 59s)
What do you want to say?
(1h 7m 1s) Al:
your friend it’s just that you don’t get your it’s just they don’t get your own island they
(1h 7m 2s) Kevin:
Whoa, the entire game.
(1h 7m 6s) Al:
they have to join you on your island and you have to be online but they can play the entire
(1h 7m 10s)
game with you and if you do so you also unlock friendship bonuses shared resources advanced
(1h 7m 17s)
trading and unique unique emotes just for you two
(1h 7m 21s)
mm-hmm
(1h 7m 21s) Kevin:
that’s pretty dang cool yeah I don’t say everything hello kitty does is solid
(1h 7m 29s)
it’s the way it works like call it works well great game I don’t know who it says there’s more
(1h 7m 38s)
characters coming I don’t know sunrio that well I don’t know who’s an executive it’s an agaritsuka
(1h 7m 43s) Al:
we’ll find out one day
(1h 7m 47s)
Lou’s Lagoon
Lou’s Lagoon
(1h 7m 49s) Al:
have released our 1.2.1 update
(1h 7m 51s)
which adds extra storage
(1h 7m 53s)
and silos
(1h 7m 54s)
this is a thing that people have been complaining about
(1h 7m 56s)
so they added it
(1h 7m 57s) Kevin:
Okay, I didn’t realize it, but okay.
(1h 7m 57s) Al:
there you go
(1h 8m) Kevin:
The silo’s here.
(1h 8m) Al:
that’s yeah that’s it
(1h 8m 1s) Kevin:
That’s kind of it.
(1h 8m 3s) Al:
that’s the entirety of the update
One Lonely Outpost
(1h 8m 5s) Al:
speaking of small
(1h 8m 7s)
well not small updates
(1h 8m 9s)
but small to explain updates
(1h 8m 11s)
one lonely outpost
(1h 8m 13s)
have added 10 more languages to the game
(1h 8m 15s)
yeah
(1h 8m 15s) Kevin:
And a pile of wallpapers, but not in-game.
(1h 8m 18s)
That’s for your PC.
(1h 8m 19s) Al:
yeah
(1h 8m 20s)
but yeah that’s a lot of
(1h 8m 21s) Kevin:
10 languages is a lot, actually.
(1h 8m 22s) Al:
a lot of languages
(1h 8m 25s) Kevin:
Like, joke aside, that’s really cool.
(1h 8m 27s)
That’s two Chinese’s, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Korean.
(1h 8m 35s)
That’s a lot of languages.
(1h 8m 38s) Al:
did they previously have portuguese portuguese or is it just that they’re describing the like because
(1h 8m 38s) Kevin:
Very cool.
(1h 8m 42s)
I would, yeah, I would, I would guess that.
(1h 8m 45s)
That’s why they specified Brazilian Portuguese.
(1h 8m 49s) Al:
I don’t know because I think the thing is the thing is about
(1h 8m 52s)
is that brazilian portuguese is spoken by more people than portuguese portuguese right
(1h 8m 57s) Kevin:
Yeah, actually, no, you’re probably right, because they didn’t have Spanish, so I don’t think they had any other one, which I’m going to guess, so.
(1h 9m 3s)
Yeah, that’s probably it.
(1h 9m 4s)
That upsets me.
(1h 9m 5s)
Why don’t we get Mexican Spanish?
(1h 9m 8s)
Not just in the year, like, everywhere.
(1h 9m 10s) Al:
whatever everyone’s speaking
(1h 9m 12s) Kevin:
Man.
(1h 9m 15s)
You won’t hear me complaining.
(1h 9m 17s)
Oh, my.
(1h 9m 18s)
Do you know about Portazo, Al, in Pokemon?
(1h 9m 21s) Al:
Oh, no.
(1h 9m 22s) Kevin:
Do you know about Portazo in Pokemon?
(1h 9m 25s)
So…
(1h 9m 27s)
It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen
(1h 9m 29s)
in a translation foible.
(1h 9m 32s)
The move Slam in Pokemon.
(1h 9m 34s)
You know, your normal type, the Pokemon Slams.
(1h 9m 37s)
It was…
(1h 9m 38s)
And it was…
(1h 9m 39s)
When was it removed?
(1h 9m 41s)
It might not have been until like XY.
(1h 9m 44s)
Maybe later.
(1h 9m 46s)
Anyways, for generations,
(1h 9m 49s)
the move was called Portazo in Spanish.
(1h 9m 54s)
Which is Slam,
(1h 9m 57s)
specifically, it’s slamming a door.
(1h 9m 59s) Al:
Sounds like a psychic move to me, not a normal move.
(1h 10m) Kevin:
And so it’s just really funny
(1h 10m 1s)
because the implication is that
(1h 10m 2s)
they somehow summoned a door
(1h 10m 3s)
and just slammed it on the enemy.
(1h 10m 6s)
And it was…
(1h 10m 7s)
Yeah, basically.
(1h 10m 10s)
And they left that until…
(1h 10m 11s)
Yeah, Generation 6, XY.
(1h 10m 13s)
But that was really funny.
(1h 10m 15s)
Anyways, it’s just a side story there.
(1h 10m 19s)
Good for you.
(1h 10m 20s)
What is it?
(1h 10m 20s)
One of the only other questions.
(1h 10m 21s)
Now you can talk about Portazos
(1h 10m 23s)
and not Mexican-Spanish stuff.
(1h 10m 26s) Al:
all right and our final game update
(1h 10m 27s) Kevin:
Could we just call this
Dave The Diver
(1h 10m 31s) Al:
this is weird I don’t know why they’re just they yeah which I think it would be quicker to say who
(1h 10m 32s) Kevin:
the monthly update?
(1h 10m 35s)
We should turn it into a quiz, Al.
(1h 10m 38s)
Who is Dave the Diver crossing over with this month?
(1h 10m 43s) Al:
they’re not crossing over with but yeah I mean this one I will say it makes a lot of sense dave
(1h 10m 48s)
the diver cross subnautica two hey divers pack your diving gear what we’re going extra time
(1h 10m 48s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 10m 50s)
Yeah, that one makes sense.
(1h 10m 56s) Al:
terrestrial in 2027 early 2027 the subnautica 2 dlc for dave the diver will release dave and
(1h 11m 3s)
are heading to the uncharted waters of proteus every strange creature is a discovery for dave
(1h 11m 9s)
and a menu item for bancho explore the deep help out new new friends and try not to get eaten along
(1h 11m 15s)
the way so you appear to go through like a dimensional portal to get there so i’m guessing
(1h 11m 16s) Kevin:
Oh, yeah, yeah.
(1h 11m 23s) Al:
you like buy the portal to put on your boat and then
(1h 11m 26s)
you can go there rather than just
(1h 11m 28s) Kevin:
yeah uh yeah but I mean dave you did a lot of things and it’s like yeah i’m pretty I like how
(1h 11m 37s)
bancho goes to the portal too um though that is there is a cthulhu in the back that is kind of
(1h 11m 43s) Al:
Yep.
(1h 11m 43s) Kevin:
missing from a the diver so I appreciate it um dave does too much
(1h 11m 47s) Al:
Is it?
(1h 11m 48s)
Do you know what’s missing from Dave the Diver?
(1h 11m 49s) Kevin:
yeah there you go more it’s
(1h 11m 51s) Al:
Thalassophobia.
(1h 11m 55s)
More terrors.
(1h 11m 58s) Kevin:
the game from the terrors yeah I agree um very uh yeah probably okay this is this is me overreaching
(1h 12m 3s) Al:
This will be a paid one, right, definitely.
(1h 12m 10s) Kevin:
and overanalyzing and and so semantics antics but this it’s coming to steam that almost feel
(1h 12m 15s)
like implying not to consoles but I doubt that’s true yes words yeah words uh either way
(1h 12m 18s) Al:
I doubt that’s true, yeah.
(1h 12m 21s)
I think it’s just, you know, a slip of words.
(1h 12m 24s)
It’s not thinking that people would interpret it that way.
(1h 12m 26s)
They’re announcing it on Steam, therefore they’re talking about
(1h 12m 28s) Kevin:
yeah that’s probably it looks good i’d stay the diver did we have enough content for dave the
(1h 12m 36s)
month too i’m still running for cooking month next year
(1h 12m 38s) Al:
Yeah, we really do.
Other News
(1h 12m 47s) Al:
all right so we’re now going to enter our other section of news first up we got an article about
Pokopia
(1h 12m 54s) Al:
the pocopia 2.0.0 update two months after release listing a bunch of features that added to it which
(1h 13m)
apparently not everybody knew about them which what did you miss what did you miss from this
(1h 13m 3s) Kevin:
I play the game every day
(1h 13m 5s)
and I was one of the ones who didn’t know.
(1h 13m 8s) Al:
list that you didn’t know because I looked through this listen I think I knew everything
(1h 13m 8s) Kevin:
Here, let me pull up the list.
(1h 13m 10s)
Hold on.
(1h 13m 12s)
There was something about the windows.
(1h 13m 14s)
Like, you can change the depth.
(1h 13m 15s)
I didn’t realize that.
(1h 13m 17s)
Unless I’m misunderstanding what it means.
(1h 13m 19s)
But they said, like, you can change the window depth.
(1h 13m 24s) Al:
You can fine-tune the depth when placing windows, doors, and similar items.
(1h 13m 32s) Kevin:
or maybe I really didn’t realize
(1h 13m 34s)
that was not a thing
(1h 13m 35s)
yeah
(1h 13m 36s) Al:
I mean my favorite update for for 2.0.0 was being able to eat food while graveler
(1h 13m 37s) Kevin:
let’s
(1h 13m 45s)
I mean that was a really good one yeah yeah they talk about the I didn’t realize you could not move
(1h 13m 51s)
multiple items in bulk before uh so he has the housing machine that’s a nice change uh oh the
(1h 13m 59s)
sport the water one too when ditto spits out stored water adjusted water levels now
(1h 14m 3s) Al:
yeah
(1h 14m 3s)
I i think they yeah they needed to do that to actually make the update work because of the
(1h 14m 4s) Kevin:
automatically match nearby water levels I didn’t quite catch that
(1h 14m 8s)
yeah
(1h 14m 12s) Al:
like you know being able to build things underwater and stuff like that
(1h 14m 12s) Kevin:
Yeah.
(1h 14m 15s)
Yeah, they had to…
(1h 14m 16s) Al:
they just fundamentally changed how water worked in the game
(1h 14m 18s) Kevin:
Yeah, they had to depower the sickos who drained the oceans.
(1h 14m 21s) Al:
yeah
(1h 14m 24s)
yeah uh yeah so I mean there’s probably not much to talk about there just if if you were
(1h 14m 33s)
if you weren’t sure what nice features were added into pocopia with 2.0.0 there’s an article for
(1h 14m 37s)
that so there you go lightyear frontier have announced that their pioneers bundle dlc will
Lightyear Frontier
(1h 14m 44s) Al:
be no longer available once 1.0 is out so it’s a pre 1.0 dlc
(1h 14m 52s)
it’s just cosmetics that’s all
(1h 14m 53s) Kevin:
Yeah, that’s that’s fair. I think that can be done. I don’t know what’s in the bundle, but
(1h 14m 58s)
Yeah, which it should be but you know they can be cool cuz
(1h 14m 58s) Al:
the
(1h 15m 1s)
yeah they’re
(1h 15m 3s)
I mean the idea was that this was to
(1h 15m 5s)
allow
(1h 15m 6s)
you to support the game more after
(1h 15m 8s)
you bought it so it was just
(1h 15m 11s)
a mech skin, a homestead
(1h 15m 12s)
and some decorations and so I guess
(1h 15m 15s)
it’s more now just a case of like hey
(1h 15m 16s)
if you have this you had the game early
(1h 15m 18s)
like that’s it’s a pre-order
(1h 15m 20s)
bonus basically now
(1h 15m 21s)
Country Slime
Country Slime
(1h 15m 25s) Al:
this is an interesting one
(1h 15m 26s)
they have announced that they’re going to rename
(1h 15m 29s)
the game to Castaway Slime
(1h 15m 30s)
and they say that they need
(1h 15m 33s)
to make a new Steam page for that
(1h 15m 34s)
they say Country Slime started
(1h 15m 37s)
as small as a small hobby
(1h 15m 39s)
project because of this we did not think enough
(1h 15m 41s)
about important moments like opening the store
(1h 15m 42s)
page or releasing the demo
(1h 15m 44s)
we simply thought let’s release it first
(1h 15m 46s)
looking back we really wish we had prepared these
(1h 15m 48s)
things better the main parts of the games
(1h 15m 50s)
were survival and combat but the game had a
(1h 15m 52s)
peaceful countryside setting and the title
(1h 15m 55s)
was Country Slime there are many players
(1h 15m 57s)
who enjoy survival and combat but many people
(1h 15m 59s)
came to the game expecting farming and a life
(1h 16m)
simulation game and found the combat much
(1h 16m 3s)
harder than they expected so
(1h 16m 4s)
Country Slime will start again as Castaway Slime
(1h 16m 7s)
a slime stranded on a deserted island the game
(1h 16m 10s)
now has a different pace and direction with
(1h 16m 12s)
many changes and improvements this time
(1h 16m 14s)
after opening the store page we will have a
(1h 16m 16s)
separate plate or playtest first before
(1h 16m 18s)
demo the amount of content in the demo
(1h 16m 20s)
will be similar to the current demo
(1h 16m 22s)
unfortunately the new bosses will not be in
(1h 16m 24s)
the demo but we will work on as many as
(1h 16m 26s)
possible and add them for the full release
(1h 16m 29s)
We also plan to keep adding free updates
(1h 16m 30s)
after release. You can find the
(1h 16m 33s)
store link at the bottom, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
(1h 16m 36s)
So I don’t
(1h 16m 37s)
I don’t understand why they needed to make
(1h 16m 39s)
a new page. Can you not change
(1h 16m 40s) Kevin:
Well, I mean, they’re making just a completely different game.
(1h 16m 41s) Al:
the name?
(1h 16m 43s)
Well, no, it’s not. It’s the same game.
(1h 16m 45s) Kevin:
Well, it sounds to me like it’s a completely different game
(1h 16m 47s) Al:
They’re just changing how they’re advertising it
(1h 16m 52s) Kevin:
because it’s not a different name.
(1h 16m 54s)
It’s not a different aesthetic or setting.
(1h 16m 59s)
It’s now the gameplay focus is different.
(1h 17m 1s)
It sounds like a totally different game to me.
(1h 17m 4s)
It’s not about farming and country life.
(1h 17m 6s) Al:
no but they yeah but they said they said people were expecting that not that that’s what the game
(1h 17m 6s) Kevin:
They even talk about, hey, maybe we’ll make that one day.
(1h 17m 10s) Al:
was I think they have slowly changed the game over time and they’re now think it doesn’t they
(1h 17m 17s)
now feel like it doesn’t fit the title anymore and that people are expecting to it is yeah but
(1h 17m 20s) Kevin:
the ship of Theseus thing, I guess.
(1h 17m 24s) Al:
yeah they’ve not I don’t think they’re fundamentally changing anything just now other than the name
(1h 17m 27s)
and making it more clear what the game is but I just don’t understand why they needed a new steam
(1h 17m 34s)
page because of
(1h 17m 35s) Kevin:
Well, if that’s the case, yeah, I’m not 100% sure either.
(1h 17m 36s) Al:
I don’t know
(1h 17m 38s)
whether it’s not
(1h 17m 39s)
maybe is it not
(1h 17m 40s)
possible to change
(1h 17m 42s) Kevin:
Maybe.
(1h 17m 43s)
I have no idea, to be very frank.
(1h 17m 47s)
Yeah, that’s an interesting one.
(1h 17m 48s)
Also, just a small hobby project.
(1h 17m 51s)
Why are you putting it on Steam?
(1h 17m 52s)
It’s kind of wild.
(1h 17m 53s) Al:
so so if you’ve not done the pre-release review you can still change the name on steam
(1h 17m 54s) Kevin:
Like, I guess you can, but I don’t know.
(1h 17m 56s)
It feels very understandable.
(1h 18m 5s) Al:
which i’m presuming they won’t have gone through because the game’s not out
(1h 18m 6s) Kevin:
Yeah, I don’t know.
(1h 18m 8s) Al:
maybe maybe they do have to have gone through the pre-release review already maybe the pre-release
(1h 18m 9s) Kevin:
I feel like part of it is a marketing thing, maybe question mark.
(1h 18m 17s) Al:
reviews before your page is public because it says valve locks
(1h 18m 23s)
the name fields to protect users who have already wish listed wish listed or bought the product
(1h 18m 28s)
and you can already wish list so maybe the pre-release review is before your page goes public
(1h 18m 32s) Kevin:
Ah, there you go.
(1h 18m 35s) Al:
so it might not be possible to change the name
(1h 18m 37s)
no i’ve only seen it one other time with a game changing name and I can’t even remember what it
(1h 18m 37s) Kevin:
Interesting.
(1h 18m 39s)
You don’t see this very often, do you?
(1h 18m 44s) Al:
was but there was something that changed name a couple years ago anyway there we go country slime
(1h 18m 50s)
is now
(1h 18m 51s)
Cast Away Slime
(1h 18m 52s)
and if you were full
(1h 18m 53s)
following it on Steam
(1h 18m 54s)
go follow the new page
(1h 18m 55s)
assuming you would like
(1h 18m 56s) Kevin:
wasn’t I didn’t remember this game at all to be very right sorry
(1h 18m 57s) Al:
to continue
(1h 18m 57s)
fair enough
(1h 19m 2s)
fair enough
Lone Farm
(1h 19m 3s) Al:
Lone Farm have announced
(1h 19m 5s)
that their development
(1h 19m 6s)
has resumed
(1h 19m 6s)
they paused development
(1h 19m 8s)
a few years ago
(1h 19m 9s)
but they have now
(1h 19m 9s)
come back
(1h 19m 10s)
to the game
(1h 19m 11s)
so
(1h 19m 12s)
yeah that’s it
(1h 19m 14s)
there’s not
(1h 19m 14s)
much more
(1h 19m 15s)
there but
(1h 19m 16s)
hopefully
(1h 19m 17s) Kevin:
It sounds like maybe they could have…
(1h 19m 17s) Al:
hopefully they’ll manage
(1h 19m 19s) Kevin:
Yeah, I mean, good for them
(1h 19m 20s)
that they stepped away to take care of their health
(1h 19m 22s)
or whatnot.
(1h 19m 24s)
Sounds like maybe they didn’t announce
(1h 19m 26s)
to people who were following, which…
(1h 19m 28s)
Well, maybe you wanted to do that, but
(1h 19m 29s)
no, it’s LV, I guess.
(1h 19m 32s)
I’m glad they’re better and trying to work
(1h 19m 36s) Al:
That’s true, yeah. They don’t say they told people, they just said had to put the project on hold, not I.
(1h 19m 45s) Kevin:
idea but
(1h 19m 46s) Al:
Yeah, the last the last update was December 2022, which ironically is titled I’m back with development.
(1h 19m 47s) Kevin:
oh that’s I love
(1h 19m 54s) Al:
Awkward.
(1h 19m 58s)
All right.
(1h 19m 59s)
We also have and I kind of hate when I do this because we’ve got another interview with Concerned Ape to talk about.
Haunted Chocolatier
(1h 20m 7s) Kevin:
he’s still working on haunted
(1h 20m 8s) Al:
Now, I hate this article.
(1h 20m 11s)
It’s from GQ.
(1h 20m 13s) Kevin:
chocolatier
(1h 20m 14s) Al:
Yeah, I know.
(1h 20m 16s)
I hate this article so much, right?
(1h 20m 18s)
There’s there’s things that it talks about.
(1h 20m 20s)
You’re just like, what are you doing?
(1h 20m 21s)
It’s clearly written by.
(1h 20m 23s)
So, for example, one of the quotes from this article is credited as the first cozy game, a genre built around nonviolent, wholesome play.
(1h 20m 31s)
2016 Stardew Valley became Gen Z’s answer to The Sims, shifting over 50 million copies in the process.
(1h 20m 36s) Kevin:
Look, I don’t, I don’t speak, I speak in hyperbole all the time,
(1h 20m 37s) Al:
I’m sorry.
(1h 20m 38s)
I’m sorry.
(1h 20m 39s)
What?
(1h 20m 41s)
Everything about that is wrong.
(1h 20m 45s)
But…
(1h 20m 46s) Kevin:
but not to this extent, but somebody shoot this man!
(1h 20m 46s) Al:
It is not credited as the cozy game.
(1h 20m 49s) Kevin:
What are you talking about?
(1h 20m 53s) Al:
Well, I guess technically they just credited it as the first cozy game.
(1h 20m 56s)
So I guess technically you can say they they have credited it.
(1h 20m 59s)
But that’s nonsense.
(1h 21m 1s)
Absolute nonsense.
(1h 21m 3s)
Right.
(1h 21m 3s)
You don’t even have to go.
(1h 21m 4s)
You don’t even have to talk about Harvest Moon.
(1h 21m 5s)
There’s other like Animal Crossing is certainly early up there.
(1h 21m 9s)
And there’s probably stuff earlier as well.
(1h 21m 11s)
Like a lot of early games were not violent.
(1h 21m 13s) Kevin:
The games…
(1h 21m 15s)
How about the games Concerned Ape played?
(1h 21m 16s) Al:
Yeah, well, exactly, exactly.
(1h 21m 19s) Kevin:
That inspired him to make this.
(1h 21m 22s)
Why is GQ interviewing Concerned Ape?
(1h 21m 26s) Al:
Well, this is the thing you’d think that someone I think when you get to a certain point where people just end up, you just rope in someone to do a thing.
(1h 21m 35s)
Right. Like, I don’t know. So that’s this. So most of this article is stupid.
(1h 21m 41s)
Right. And most of it is either just wrong, stupid stuff or.
(1h 21m 46s)
Or just the same questions over and over again. But there was one interesting thing to talk about.
(1h 21m 52s)
And he says, let me see if I can find. They didn’t actually list what question they asked him.
(1h 21m 59s)
But what he said was, it is still what I call a town game, explains Barone of the Haunted Chocolatier.
(1h 22m 6s)
But it’s more an action RPG. The main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful.
(1h 22m 13s)
There are monsters. There are boss fights. It’s for the people in situations.
(1h 22m 16s)
Stardew Valley that go into the mines. That’s what I do, honestly.
(1h 22m 20s)
So, yeah, I just think that’s an interesting thing.
(1h 22m 23s)
I think this is the most concrete information that we’ve got around how it’s different to Stardew in that it’s clearly designed as, as he says, an action RPG.
(1h 22m 35s)
But what I think is interesting is, is the combat going to be better?
(1h 22m 40s)
You know, as Jonnie said on our Slack, I hope he’s got significantly better at building combat systems from Stardew.
(1h 22m 46s)
I agree with that. I think that a combat RPG in the Stardew world sounds like fun, assuming that it’s better with the combat.
(1h 22m 58s) Kevin:
I mean, I think that’s a safe assumption,
(1h 23m)
but this leads to the really funny scenario in my head
(1h 23m 2s)
where ConcernedApe’s playing Stardew, and he’s just thinking,
(1h 23m 5s)
man, this combat sucks.
(1h 23m 7s)
I could make a better game.
(1h 23m 8s)
It’s a good job.
(1h 23m 9s) Al:
I think it’s interesting because like 10 years ago the idea of the combat in a farming game
(1h 23m 17s)
is less of a thing that people are not that it didn’t exist like obviously rune factory existed
(1h 23m 22s)
um but it was like there just weren’t as many farming games just in general right and then
(1h 23m 29s)
farming games that had some level of combat were obviously even fewer and farther between
(1h 23m 33s)
so there was less to compare it to whereas now we have so many more like i’ve been talking
(1h 23m 39s)
about Fields of Mistria and I one thing I didn’t talk about in last week’s episode was
(1h 23m 42s)
I love the combat in that game purely because you can jump and that allows you so much more
(1h 23m 48s)
flexibility in your combat being able to jump away from enemies you can do that much faster than you
(1h 23m 54s)
can dodge and so giving you more options like that would make a massive massive improvement
(1h 24m 1s) Kevin:
sure yeah yeah no that sounds good uh I trust concern date like I think you know stardust
(1h 24m 8s)
combat fit for what it needed to but there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement and
(1h 24m 13s)
i’m sure he’s seen a lot of room for improvement he plays a lot of games from my understanding here
(1h 24m 17s)
so we’ll see
(1h 24m 19s) Al:
yeah yeah I i look i’m i’m gonna play it no matter what right so it just
(1h 24m 19s) Kevin:
when we’re actually obligated by ourselves
(1h 24m 26s) Al:
that that that well i’m thinking that meme of spongebob with the the handcuffs um but the
(1h 24m 28s) Kevin:
we’re holding the glass
(1h 24m 31s)
gun to our head to play the game
(1h 24m 32s)
yeah yeah the tiny hearts
(1h 24m 37s) Al:
handcuffs are just so massive and the tiny arms yeah that’s us having to play concern
(1h 24m 39s) Kevin:
yeah that too yeah
(1h 24m 42s)
yeah
(1h 24m 44s) Al:
Haunted Chocolatier
(1h 24m 45s) Kevin:
exactly
(1h 24m 46s) Al:
thank
(1h 24m 49s)
you to stewart and the slack who posted that
(1h 24m 50s)
um article uh I hated it but it gave us something interesting to talk about
(1h 24m 53s) Kevin:
Yay, Stuart.
(1h 24m 56s)
Yeah.
(1h 24m 56s) Al:
all right that is the other news so there’s only one thing left to do and that’s talk about the new
New Games
(1h 25m 2s) Al:
game moon frost talk about talking about generic names of games moon frost
Moonfrost
(1h 25m 8s) Kevin:
Yeah, it doesn’t tell me anything.
(1h 25m 14s)
And I watched the trailer and I still don’t get why it’s called Moon Frost.
(1h 25m 18s) Al:
in a world ravaged by meteor storms begin your cozy yet epic adventure as a frost hunter
(1h 25m 24s)
rebuild a shattered village while enjoying a life of farming crafting and befriending charming
(1h 25m 30s)
neighbors as you uncover the dark truths behind the mysterious second moon oh so there’s a another
(1h 25m 38s)
moon and there’s there’s ice that’s why it’s moon frost uh this game is in early access now
(1h 25m 46s)
on Steam
(1h 25m 48s)
with mixed reviews
(1h 25m 49s)
laughing
(1h 25m 50s) Kevin:
Yeah, I mean, I have mixed feelings.
(1h 25m 53s)
So it’s an isometric view, which I find works.
(1h 25m 58s)
I’m not seeing much of the moon and the frost part,
(1h 26m 1s)
like what’s going on.
(1h 26m 2s)
The trailer’s not selling me or not being very clear on it.
(1h 26m 6s)
The character designs are fine.
(1h 26m 8s)
It’s your standard fair, 20-somethings,
(1h 26m 11s)
young, it’s relatively attractive people.
(1h 26m 14s)
There’s farming, there’s building a house
(1h 26m 17s)
with the grid-style stuff.
(1h 26m 20s)
I will say some of the dungeons look kind of cool.
(1h 26m 23s)
At the end, you can see them.
(1h 26m 24s)
There’s obstacles and traps kind of moving in real time.
(1h 26m 30s)
Somewhat challenging for farming-type game.
(1h 26m 34s)
But all in all, I don’t know.
(1h 26m 36s)
I’m just not seeing.
(1h 26m 37s)
It doesn’t tell me what is a frost hunter or whatever.
(1h 26m 40s)
I just see you vacuuming stuff up, I think.
(1h 26m 42s)
Maybe.
(1h 26m 43s) Al:
Kevin, Kevin, I have wonderful news.
(1h 26m 46s) Kevin:
Yes.
(1h 26m 47s) Al:
There’s a controversy.
(1h 26m 48s) Kevin:
What? Oh!
(1h 26m 50s)
Thank you. Oh, that’s what I needed.
(1h 26m 52s) Al:
Beware this game.
(1h 26m 52s) Kevin:
I’m grasping.
(1h 26m 54s) Al:
Beware this game was funded with money scammed from its own community.
(1h 26m 58s)
I am quoting here from a review on Steam.
(1h 27m 1s)
This game started as a Web3 slash cryptocurrency game built around NFTs.
(1h 27m 8s)
The developers organized multiple events where community members spent thousands of dollars
(1h 27m 13s)
with the promise of a future token and a potential return on investment.
(1h 27m 17s)
They raised millions of dollars from their community.
(1h 27m 21s)
For two years, we beta tested the game, stress tested every aspect of it,
(1h 27m 25s)
promoted it extensively and supported the project.
(1h 27m 28s)
Then just one day after their latest event, which reportedly raised hundreds of thousands of dollars,
(1h 27m 33s)
they announced the removal of NFTs with no refunds for anyone one single day
(1h 27m 38s)
after collecting money from their community.
(1h 27m 41s)
They subsequently shut down their old Discord
(1h 27m 43s)
server, created a new one
(1h 27m 45s)
and started banning people who brought up
(1h 27m 47s)
the controversy or criticised their actions.
(1h 27m 50s)
They also deleted tweets and
(1h 27m 51s)
comments and blocked people on social media for
(1h 27m 53s)
speaking out. Now they’re releasing the game
(1h 27m 55s)
on Steam, as if nothing ever happened.
(1h 27m 58s)
The worst part, it’s essentially
(1h 27m 59s)
the same game we played before, now
(1h 28m 1s)
stripped of its NFTs with a few
(1h 28m 3s)
basic additions and sold for $8.
(1h 28m 6s)
As if nothing happened.
(1h 28m 7s)
These guys are shady scammers.
(1h 28m 10s)
Internet never forgets.
(1h 28m 11s) Kevin:
All that soon.
(1h 28m 13s) Al:
This was
(1h 28m 15s)
an NFT game. They stole
(1h 28m 17s)
a bunch of money from NFT people
(1h 28m 19s)
and then got rid of the NFTs and
(1h 28m 21s)
released the game.
(1h 28m 23s)
Apparently. Allegedly.
(1h 28m 23s) Kevin:
i’m um i’m amazed look i’m gonna assume they’re true because it’s funny um but
(1h 28m 31s)
i’m amazed they bothered to release the game at all like oh man why yeah I guess I guess that’s
(1h 28m 35s) Al:
Yeah.
(1h 28m 40s) Kevin:
what they’re going for uh I love the banning everyone who talks about it that’s that’s good
(1h 28m 45s)
um that’s no wonder it’s like fun
(1h 28m 48s) Al:
I’m always a bit conflicted on these sort of things
(1h 28m 52s)
because it’s like, oh, wait, NFTs were a scam.
(1h 28m 55s)
Who could have known that?
(1h 28m 57s)
Who could have told you that that was going to be the case?
(1h 29m 1s) Kevin:
Yeah. Yeah. Right. Like, I guess we got a game out of it, but it’s good for an NFT game. I’ll give it that. Oh, that changes it so much. I mean, I wasn’t really going to play before, but like, oh, no wonder there’s nothing here.
(1h 29m 19s) Al:
Yeah. It turns out that a game that is built around a scam turns out not to be that fun. Imagine that.
(1h 29m 25s) Kevin:
yeah oh what sometimes sometimes it is someone saved my hoyo
(1h 29m 33s) Al:
There are quite a few reviews on Steam as well,
(1h 29m 36s)
talking about the bait and switch with the NFTs.
(1h 29m 40s)
So, yeah, that is very funny.
(1h 29m 43s) Kevin:
Yeah, that’s incredible.
(1h 29m 47s)
I’m going to assume it’s true
(1h 29m 48s)
because why would you bother
(1h 29m 50s)
that specifically
(1h 29m 51s)
and from multiple people?
(1h 29m 53s) Al:
I don’t know people do weird things
(1h 29m 55s)
so and obviously we don’t want to be sued so allegedly all of this is alleged we don’t know
(1h 29m 55s) Kevin:
That is true.
(1h 29m 56s)
That is true.
(1h 30m 3s) Al:
but yeah this is quite interesting uh well we will keep an eye and we will come back to you
(1h 30m 10s)
with any continuation in the controversy
(1h 30m 13s)
alleged alleged
(1h 30m 14s) Kevin:
Man, I love our crime stories.
(1h 30m 16s)
We’ve gotten so many more than I ever could have dreamed.
(1h 30m 19s)
Alleged crime stories.
(1h 30m 20s) Al:
I mentioned…
(1h 30m 22s) Kevin:
Very good.
(1h 30m 23s) Al:
Amazing.
(1h 30m 23s) Kevin:
Good stuff.
(1h 30m 24s)
What a way to end this.
(1h 30m 26s)
That’s all I need.
(1h 30m 27s) Al:
Yeah, amazing.
(1h 30m 29s)
All right, well, thank you, Kevin, for joining me to catch up on all the news.
Outro
(1h 30m 33s) Al:
I’m sure I’ll go back to Steam as soon as we finish, and there’ll be 10 more news updates.
(1h 30m 38s) Kevin:
Yeah, of course.
(1h 30m 39s)
We cannot win.
(1h 30m 41s) Al:
But hey, look, it’s a busy time of year.
(1h 30m 42s)
I’m not going to complain about some entirely news episodes.
(1h 30m 47s)
Easier to plan.
(1h 30m 48s) Kevin:
Yep, that it is.
(1h 30m 50s) Al:
Is there anything you would like to share with the audience?
(1h 30m 53s) Kevin:
Nothing comes to mind.
(1h 30m 56s)
I’m Cooper, whatever.
(1h 30m 57s)
Go find me if you care.
