Intro

(30s) Al:

Hello farmers, and welcome to another episode of The Harvest Season. My name is Al.

(36s)

And we’re here today to talk about, well, Cottagecore games, but I mean, we’re only talking about one today.

(42s)

Let’s be honest. I mean, we might talk about, we will probably talk about two, because I suspect we’ll have,

(47s)

we will mention Stardew, because we always have to mention Stardew when we’re talking about a Stardew like, right?

(52s) Kelly:

It’s inevitable, I think, honestly.

(56s) Al:

Welcome back, Kelly. It’s time for another Fields of Mistria episode.

(59s) Kelly:

Yay, I’m so glad it finally came out.

(1m) Al:

Yeah, I’m not sure if you’re aware of this or not, but it was very satisfying to me that the 1.0 of Fields of Mistria came out exactly to the day, two years after the Early Access came out.

(1m 14s) Kelly:

Oh I did not realize that actually.

(1m 16s) Al:

The 5th of August, the exact same day. Isn’t that sad?

(1m 19s) Kelly:

That is really nice. Also I feel like that’s not a bad um wait for you know unfortunately

(1m 26s)

an early access game at this point in um the gaming world.

(1m 30s) Al:

Yeah, I think two years is fine. I think one, you know, so I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think it should be less than one year.

(1m 42s)

I think if if it’s longer than a year, you’re not doing an early access. You’re just throwing some vague proof of concepts in front.

(1m 50s) Kelly:

Yeah, I feel like it’s it’s more of like a you’re throwing it out to the audience to see what the audience wants and then using us as like a test subject to.

(1m 59s) Al:

Yeah, exactly. And I think it’s fine. I know one part of Early Access is obviously getting feedback and figuring out what’s worked and what hasn’t. And obviously there’s a lot that we’ll talk about about this game that has done that. But I also think that you can take that too far and it just ends up being designed by committee.

(2m 15s) Kelly:

absolutely yeah I agree and also I think um at a certain point you start to lose the

(2m 20s)

the draw that like or the following and the excitement yeah exactly

(2m 24s) Al:

People aren’t talking about Fields of Mistria the way they were two years ago.

(2m 27s)

It was everywhere two years ago.

(2m 28s) Kelly:

yeah which is like honestly why I do tend to avoid early access games because like sometimes

(2m 29s) Al:

I only started playing it because it was everywhere.

(2m 31s)

And then this year, it’s like I don’t really hear people talking about it.

(2m 34s)

So I feel like it fell off in that early act.

(2m 42s) Kelly:

there’s an issue with how much

(2m 45s)

can I replay it?

(2m 46s)

Depending on how much they put in the game

(2m 48s)

in the first place.

(2m 49s) Al:

We will definitely talk about that.

(2m 51s) Kelly:

And then also it’s like, you know,

(2m 54s)

if it’s, I’ll just, other games come up, you know?

(2m 57s)

And it’s hard to want to go back to a game

(2m 59s)

that you’ve played a lot

(3m 1s) Al:

Yeah. Especially, I mean, two years is enough time for standards to change in games. And so I think, I’m not saying this is the case with Fields of Mistria, but it wouldn’t be rare for me to come back to a game two years later and go, no, this isn’t fun anymore. Even if it’s better than it was two years ago, it’s not fun anymore because my standards have changed.

(3m 18s) Kelly:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And I, I, again, I don’t think this applies to Mystria, but I just, in a general sense. Yeah.

(3m 29s) Al:

Yeah, I actually think I’ve started feeling that with Stardew Valley.

(3m 32s) Kelly:

Oh, interesting. I mean, to be fair, uh, what are we at now? 15 years ago?

(3m 36s) Al:

Yeah, well, that’s the thing.

(3m 38s)

But the problem is there’s like fundamental things

(3m 41s)

that I think have changed in the standards of people

(3m 44s)

and certainly my standards that I don’t think Concerned Ape

(3m 44s) Kelly:

Yeah, and like, well, maybe when he releases his new game, we’ll have different fundamentals.

(3m 47s) Al:

is ever going to change.

(3m 49s)

And I think that’s possibly a me problem.

(3m 52s)

We’ll see.

(3m 57s)

I told

(3m 59s)

Yeah, I don’t know because one of the things that I’ve really gotten into recently in the last couple of years is jumping in games, which we can jump in this game. We’ll talk about that. I just, I find it really frustrating now when I play a farming game and I can’t jump. It’s just, it doesn’t feel as good.

(4m) Kelly:

I don’t know either.

(4m 8s)

  • Mm, mm-hmm, I do love that, yeah.

(4m 19s)

Yeah, no, I agree with that. I really like the jumping mechanic in this game. I use it a lot. Yeah.

(4m 25s) Al:

we will get to that we will get to that right let’s let’s right let’s let’s pause here because

(4m 29s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(4m 29s) Al:

we’re about we’re about to fall headfirst into the Fields of Mistria discussion um before we

(4m 36s)

talk about Fields of Mistria we’ve not got any news this episode not because there isn’t news

(4m 39s)

but because there’s too much news uh and and and we want to keep this one nice and kind of tight

(4m 45s)

tight episode so i’m gonna shunt all of the news into next week we’re gonna do a bumper news episode

(4m 52s)

next week cover everything um so we’re not going to do that

(4m 55s)

this episode however we do still have kelly what have you been up to and it doesn’t have to just be

What Have We Been Up To

(5m) Al:

games it can be other things if you’re watching things if you’re listening to things reading things

(5m 5s) Kelly:

You actually, you read my mind because I did put a show on my list, because I’ve mostly been just playing Mistria since you asked me if I wanted to do this.

(5m 11s) Al:

yeah that’s how it goes

(5m 13s)

oh goodness

(5m 15s) Kelly:

And I think I put like, you know, 60 something hours in and like the so it’s definitely been time consuming.

(5m 23s)

But I did just finish. I spent the summer slowly watching The Expanse.

(5m 27s) Al:

Ah, so I have, I want you to sell me on this because I haven’t watched it. And people keep telling me that I would like it. But to me, it feels like all of the boring politics bits from other sci-fi shows shoved into one. Tell me if I’m wrong.

(5m 45s) Kelly:

So I do think politics is a big aspect of the show, but I think it also it’s an undercurrent that is throughout the show, but it’s not the main draw, I would say.

(5m 58s)

Like, I do think it forms a lot of the plot lines and it is always there and there is always going to be politics because it is very much a show about like space as like a frontier and colonialism and the treatment of people and stuff like that as well.

(6m 10s) Al:

Yeah.

(6m 14s) Kelly:

Which, I mean, that’s…

(6m 15s) Al:

That’s also politics, but…

(6m 15s) Kelly:

That’s sci-fi.

(6m 17s)

Yeah, that’s sci-fi for you.

(6m 19s)

It’s always gonna…

(6m 19s)

I think most good sci-fi should touch on some sort of politics in that sense.

(6m 27s)

So there is that.

(6m 28s)

However, I do think it was an extremely interesting show.

(6m 33s)

Like, I really liked all of the plot lines that they went through.

(6m 38s)

The way that they developed it over the years.

(6m 41s)

They used a ton of practical effects.

(6m 45s)

Costumes that they built themselves and stuff.

(6m 48s)

And of course, it’s sci-fi.

(6m 49s)

There’s gonna be, like, CGI and stuff, too.

(6m 53s)

But I would say it’s not like Star Wars Episode II or something.

(6m 58s) Al:

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

(6m 58s) Kelly:

Like, you know what I mean?

(6m 58s)

It’s not like, you know, they’re all sitting around in the Senate always discussing politics.

(7m 4s)

Like, politics is a part of it because that’s life, I guess.

(7m 9s) Al:

Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah.

(7m 10s) Kelly:

But I think there’s a lot more interesting things going on throughout the show, too.

(7m 13s) Al:

Okay, okay.

(7m 15s)

How does it hold up for, because it’s six seasons, right?

(7m 18s)

Does it continue?

(7m 20s)

Does it stay kind of level in terms of its quality?

(7m 25s) Kelly:

Yes, I would say until the last season.

(7m 28s) Al:

Ah, see, that’s the problem.

(7m 30s) Kelly:

So they got they got like bought by Amazon like three seasons in.

(7m 31s) Al:

God.

(7m 34s)

Yeah.

(7m 36s) Kelly:

And like, honestly, that didn’t really change much.

(7m 39s)

But the last season is only like six episodes.

(7m 41s)

And it’s it just feels like rushed.

(7m 46s)

It doesn’t have like the same like commitment to characters and everything.

(7m 51s)

I would say that like previous seasons have done.

(7m 54s) Al:

Yeah.

(7m 55s) Kelly:

And like, it’s still a good plot line, but it is all based off books.

(7m 59s)

And like, I think apparently they covered most of that book in that season.

(8m 3s)

So I don’t know why they made it so short.

(8m 6s)

I think it was maybe after COVID.

(8m 9s)

But like, so it was still an enjoyable season, but it just felt like areas that they would have explored further in other seasons didn’t get the same level of treatment.

(8m 19s) Al:

Okay, so it’s left you wanting more rather than it was actively bad, right?

(8m 21s) Kelly:

Yes.

(8m 23s) Al:

It’s not like another show I’ve not seen, a Game of Thrones, which people complain about in different ways.

(8m 23s) Kelly:

Yeah, it’s not bad.

(8m 25s)

No, no, no, no, no, it’s like, it’s like they left you on a cliffhanger and there’s a possibility that they might do more with the show but there’s like no real discussion on it.

(8m 34s) Al:

hmm I yeah okay I i think the thing is right about I so obviously generally I don’t like

(8m 42s)

things ending in cliffhangers um when especially when they know they’re going to finish um but i

(8m 48s)

think the thing about that is I try not to be too annoyed about that because that’s how life is

(8m 53s)

right like we we sometimes want shows and films to be like tie up in a neat little bit of the end

(8m 54s) Kelly:

Yes, yeah.

(8m 59s)

Yeah.

(8m 59s) Al:

bow in the end and you’re like, oh,

(9m 1s)

everyone lived happily ever after or ever

(9m 4s)

and lived dead ever after or whatever,

(9m 5s)

you know, like there’s a conclusion, but that’s not

(9m 7s)

how life is. And so in a way, it almost

(9m 8s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(9m 9s) Al:

feels unrealistic to expect that all the time.

(9m 12s) Kelly:

No, and I agree with that, which is why I don’t think that upsets me.

(9m 15s)

Like, I think that’s kind of fine as long as you do it well.

(9m 19s)

like ambiguity at the end is fine because I’ve had like,

(9m 20s) Al:

yeah

(9m 24s) Kelly:

I read so many books as a kid,

(9m 26s)

so many of them and in an ambiguous manner and it’s up to the reader to

(9m 30s)

decide like what you think happened with those characters,

(9m 33s)

which I think is kind of fun.

(9m 34s) Al:

yes I do like that so like the the typical like um oh what’s it called uh what’s the nolan film

(9m 41s)

that does that inception no no memento is not really so uh vague as more just like

(9m 42s) Kelly:

uh yes okay I was like all I could think he was memento and I was like I don’t think that’s

(9m 48s)

the right yeah no it’s not I think my brain’s just a little broken from the cold

(9m 53s) Al:

no yeah so so um uh I forgot the word name again inception this is the second second day in a row

(9m 55s) Kelly:

inception yes yeah

(10m 4s) Al:

i’ve forgotten the name of inception and i’ve had to try and figure it out so I i think that for

(10m 8s)

example I i like that sort of thing it’s not really a cliffhanger it’s more you don’t get the

(10m 11s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(10m 12s)

Yeah.

(10m 13s) Al:

satisfaction of this that’s the point the point is you don’t get to know um and and I actually like

(10m 18s) Kelly:

And I think that…

(10m 19s) Al:

that sort of thing because it leads to discussion it leads to people being like this is what I think

(10m 21s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(10m 23s) Al:

and I actually quite like that there’s lots of other things I can’t think of any off the top of

(10m 27s)

my head but there’s lots of other shows and films that do that sort of thing that I like it’s like

(10m 32s)

you don’t get 100% satisfied

(10m 34s)

deal with it

(10m 34s) Kelly:

yeah and I I agree I think that’s very different than like leaving loose storylines as like a cheap

(10m 41s) Al:

Yeah.

(10m 42s) Kelly:

cliffhanger like I I like that as an ending because again like like you said life isn’t

(10m 50s)

neatly tied up in a bow like and also like it’s kind of like a puzzle like it’s kind of like you

(10m 55s)

get a little puzzle at the end and then you get to decide based on the facts that you’ve you’ve

(10m 57s) Al:

yeah yeah yeah I absolutely yeah yeah yeah yeah that’s what I like about art right I like

(11m) Kelly:

taken it and your feelings on it

(11m 1s)

and like

(11m 4s)

people can argue with you about it

(11m 5s)

but there’s no clear right answer

(11m 7s)

so it’s like you kind of get to

(11m 9s)

mm-hmm

(11m 12s) Al:

I like when things aren’t 100 certain and what I really love is I love listening to people talk

(11m 16s)

about tv and film and and talk about their interpretation of things I think it’s really

(11m 21s)

interesting and like sometimes i’ll be like no I don’t get I don’t I don’t see that and sometimes

(11m 26s)

I’d be like, yeah, I can…

(11m 27s)

I can kind of see where you’re going.

(11m 28s)

I’m not sure.

(11m 29s)

I think that’s right.

(11m 30s)

But I can see where you’re coming from.

(11m 32s)

And then there’s something like, yeah, no, that is really interesting.

(11m 34s)

And that has changed how I view it.

(11m 36s)

And it’s changed how I appreciate it, most often for the better.

(11m 41s)

It’s like, I presume you’ve not seen Digger.

(11m 44s) Kelly:

No, not yet, which I’ve heard really good things about, which is really interesting because the trailer did not sell.

(11m 48s) Al:

Yeah.

(11m 49s)

So, yeah, so the problem is, so first up, if you have not seen Digger and you have any interest in film,

(11m 57s)

at all, right?

(11m 58s)

If you like original film, if you like interesting film, go see it.

(12m 3s)

Just go see it.

(12m 4s)

Don’t look up anything.

(12m 7s)

There is like a thing about the film that they do not talk about, but they’re apparently about to start talking about in the marketing.

(12m 15s)

And it will make the film worse if you go into it knowing this the first time.

(12m 19s)

Which I think it’s fair to say that that’s a flaw in something.

(12m 24s)

But also there’s something wonderful about like, oh, I can never

(12m 27s)

experience this the same way again, because I did I know this now going into

(12m 31s)

the second time. But the more I think about this film, the more

(12m 35s)

I like it and the more I hear other people’s interpretations of things. I’m obviously not going to talk

(12m 39s)

about specifics. There’s almost nothing I can talk about this film without

(12m 40s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(12m 43s) Al:

giving it away. So I am just going to talk about it in generics, which is that

(12m 47s)

there’s like a thing like someone at the end does a big

(12m 51s)

monologue, as happens so often. And in that monologue,

(12m 55s)

I think I

(12m 57s)

thought a certain thing by the end of it

(12m 59s)

and then there’s various people that have

(13m 1s)

said things about how they thought about that

(13m 3s)

monologue by the end and how that then

(13m 5s)

leads to their feelings about what the

(13m 7s)

film is trying to tell us

(13m 8s)

and I think

(13m 11s)

they’re all right

(13m 12s)

and I think that’s wonderful that they can all be right

(13m 13s) Kelly:

mm-hmm

(13m 15s) Al:

and that they can all

(13m 17s)

they’ve all made me enjoy

(13m 19s)

the film more and actually

(13m 21s)

thinking about that and seeing

(13m 23s)

people talk about it makes me want to go see it

(13m 26s) Kelly:

yeah like I think that’s I think getting to share perspectives and then having them change your own

(13m 31s)

perspective is like I think that’s a fundamental of like something I want in my life always so when

(13m 36s) Al:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.

(13m 39s) Kelly:

you get to experience it on like that level like it’s it’s so fun it just it makes you feel like

(13m 44s)

so connected to other people in like an interesting way too

(13m 47s) Al:

Yeah, I agree. I agree.

(13m 47s) Kelly:

um I will say I also didn’t I kind of did dismiss the movie because uh Tom Cruise is in it right and

(13m 56s)

I do not like Tom Cruise so I that was my bias you know

(13m 57s) Al:

I understand that, but I will say he’s very good in this film, and I know the Scientology thing, I know that people don’t like him because of that, blah blah blah blah blah, I get that, I totally get that.

(14m 1s) Kelly:

okay

(14m 4s)

yeah no I’m not like I don’t like not watch his movies because of that I just like

(14m 15s)

I guess I never got into like the Mission Impossibles and I’m like

(14m 18s) Al:

that’s fine. No, absolutely. That’s fine. It’s not, it’s not the same. Like, like this is,

(14m 19s) Kelly:

yeah it’s not the same at all yeah yeah yeah

(14m 23s) Al:

I’ve heard people call this Oscar bait, which I just, I hate as a term. And because it just feels

(14m 26s) Kelly:

hmm

(14m 29s) Al:

like people going, oh, you did a thing where you acted well, therefore we’re going to mock you for

(14m 36s)

that. Like, I don’t, I don’t understand this thing. It’s like, if someone continues to do the same

(14m 40s)

thing as, as Tom Cruise has done for so long, he’s been basically one character and like, sure. Okay.

(14m 46s)

Multiple characters, they’re all the same character, right?

(14m 49s)

And people will mock him for that.

(14m 51s)

And then he’ll go and do this, which is so different.

(14m 53s)

And actually, I think he’s a much better actor now than I thought he was a couple of weeks

(14m 54s) Kelly:

  • Yeah.

(15m) Al:

ago because of this.

(15m 1s)

Like, I think it’s very good.

(15m 2s)

Now, I’m not going to say that this is somehow, I think part of the problem is that some people

(15m 6s)

will come out of this film and think, oh, it’s not really a lot.

(15m 9s)

I didn’t really, I think it’s kind of surface level in what it’s trying to talk about.

(15m 13s) Kelly:

Okay.

(15m 13s) Al:

And I think that those people are also right.

(15m 16s)

again, I can’t talk too much about what it

(15m 18s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(15m 18s) Al:

is, but it

(15m 19s) Kelly:

Which makes me think of that, um, what was that one?

(15m 22s)

It was, like, Leonardo DiCaprio and about climate change.

(15m 28s)

They came out, like, two years ago or something.

(15m 30s)

And everybody was kind of like, it’s a good film, but, like, we all knew this.

(15m 34s)

Like, why are you guys making this film now?

(15m 35s) Al:

oh don’t look up yeah yeah yeah people do kind of talk about it a bit like don’t look up and that’s as much as i’ll talk about in terms of that aspect and I think that’s fair but what I will also say is I think sometimes some people need that

(15m 35s) Kelly:

Kind of.

(15m 37s)

Yes.

(15m 37s)

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(15m 41s)

Okay.

(15m 52s)

Yes, I agree, which is like, I think, unfortunately, you know, we need the media to help push certain messages.

(15m 59s) Al:

exactly exactly and so if you if you have thought about what this film is talking about

(16m 4s)

in any kind of level of detail you won’t come out going wow that was really deep it was amazing

(16m 11s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

(16m 11s) Al:

but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be a great film and it doesn’t mean that you it can’t be

(16m 18s)

doing good in some sort of ways but but I also think that uh trying to formulate words that

(16m 24s)

don’t spoil anything.

(16m 26s)

It does…

(16m 28s)

It’s a bit…

(16m 29s)

More in depth than Don’t Look Up, right?

(16m 31s)

Don’t Look Up is,

(16m 32s) Kelly:

Okay.

(16m 32s) Al:

oh no, people are ignoring climate change

(16m 35s)

and we’re all going to die, right?

(16m 36s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(16m 36s) Al:

That’s about the level of it, right?

(16m 38s)

And some people thought that was amazing

(16m 40s)

because they’d not really thought about this.

(16m 41s)

And yes, sure, that’s a little bit,

(16m 44s)

you can feel a little bit better than them, right?

(16m 47s)

Because you’re like, well, obviously this is…

(16m 48s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(16m 49s) Al:

But I think it’s great

(16m 50s)

when people actually start thinking about these things.

(16m 52s)

Hopefully that would lead to them thinking more about it.

(16m 55s)

But I think this is not completely different

(16m 59s)

but it does think a little bit deeper than Don’t Look Up.

(17m 3s)

And I think because of that,

(17m 4s)

like I’ve not heard someone say something about Don’t Look Up

(17m 6s)

which changes my opinion on it,

(17m 8s)

changes how I view certain scenes.

(17m 10s)

Whereas I have had people talk about Digger

(17m 13s)

that have made me think slightly differently

(17m 15s)

about certain scenes and going like,

(17m 16s)

oh, that’s interesting.

(17m 17s)

I hadn’t thought about it that way.

(17m 19s)

Don’t Look Up is very clear,

(17m 21s)

very obvious exactly what it is.

(17m 23s)

Again, you’re not going to come out of this

(17m 24s)

with a whole new viewpoint, right?

(17m 26s)

but I think it is interesting

(17m 29s)

and I think it does think about things a little bit deeper

(17m 32s)

someone like you, Kelly

(17m 33s)

you’re already thought about it on the level that Digger is

(17m 36s)

but I think it is enough deeper than Don’t Look Up

(17m 40s)

that people, I think, could lead some people to be going

(17m 43s)

oh, I need to think more about this sort of thing

(17m 46s)

and also it’s just fun

(17m 47s) Kelly:

and I think you know I think that’s the I mean yeah that’s important too but I think that’s kind

(17m 51s)

of the vibe I got from the movie overall is that it did not feel like I i obviously did not watch

(17m 57s)

it but from what i’ve heard people say is it does not feel as superficial

(18m)

like it feels like it goes deeper also i’m so sorry I have to blow my nose

(18m 1s) Al:

  • Yeah, I mean, not a huge amount deeper,

(18m 5s) Kelly:

yeah yeah exactly you also have to make it accessible like that’s the hard part

(18m 7s) Al:

but at least some level of deeper.

(18m 14s)

exactly exactly exactly so I think the problem is that when you do go see the film because you will

(18m 20s)

because you should um you will come out of it going I understand why the marketing was the way

(18m 22s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(18m 26s) Al:

it was and the problem is I don’t think they can make the marketing better without ruining the film

(18m 26s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(18m 33s) Al:

and it’s a really difficult problem it really really difficult problem and you cannot

(18m 34s) Kelly:

  • I see, okay, I understand.

(18m 41s) Al:

like I can’t

(18m 43s)

explain it without

(18m 44s) Kelly:

I wonder if, like, I wonder if, like, things like this, like, like, again, I heard multiple people say they saw it and then said it was amazing. So I wonder if, like, word of mouth like that helps push people who are, like, not so sure about it.

(18m 53s) Al:

yeah I hope so

(18m 57s)

I hope so but we are this is second weekend now so I guess we’ll see how things go with

(19m 4s)

second weekend but if it if it goes down on first weekend I think it’s it’s it’s done for

(19m 8s) Kelly:

I know, because it was like a flop on first weekend, right?

(19m 9s) Al:

yeah it was not good so hopefully yes people um you know we’re encouraging enough people to because

(19m 11s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah.

(19m 15s) Al:

I think I think this is the problem is that um it’s another case of this is an original film

(19m 21s)

people want original films

(19m 23s)

but the problem is

(19m 24s)

often, not always

(19m 27s)

and I’m not blaming people for this

(19m 28s)

I think this is a societal problem

(19m 31s)

because the cinema is expensive

(19m 33s)

and you don’t want to try out new things

(19m 35s)

it’s hard

(19m 37s)

to support original films

(19m 39s)

even though people say they want them

(19m 41s)

you know

(19m 42s) Kelly:

Yeah, that’s true. I mean, like, I definitely do try to, like, go see movies that aren’t more so original to try to support that, but yeah, again, it is hard.

(19m 43s) Al:

yeah

(19m 50s)

yeah

(19m 53s)

I got

(19m 54s)

like maybe five years ago

(19m 56s)

just coming out of COVID

(19m 57s)

I got

(19m 58s)

a subscription for

(20m)

my

(20m 1s)

local cinema

(20m 2s)

and

(20m 4s)

honestly it was the best thing I ever did

(20m 6s)

because

(20m 7s)

it has allowed me to see

(20m 10s)

films that I would never really consider

(20m 12s)

seeing

(20m 12s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

(20m 12s) Al:

I’ve seen so many more films

(20m 16s)

and yet

(20m 16s)

lots of them are terrible

(20m 17s)

right

(20m 18s)

but now I know that

(20m 19s)

and

(20m 20s)

I can experience

(20m 23s)

that first hand rather than just

(20m 24s)

assuming or just hearing from other people

(20m 26s)

because the thing is I actually think that yeah sure you could

(20m 28s)

watch all these things when you watch them from home

(20m 30s)

but when you’re sitting at home

(20m 33s)

there are so many other things you could be doing

(20m 34s)

instead and actually sitting down

(20m 36s)

and watching a two hour long film is a hard

(20m 39s)

thing to do whereas if you go

(20m 40s)

I am going to go out once a week

(20m 42s)

to the cinema to watch a film

(20m 44s)

I’m not saying that’s easy but I think

(20m 47s)

that if you make yourself commit to that

(20m 49s)

right like I pay for the yearly

(20m 51s)

thing because they do like

(20m 53s)

every year there’s like a

(20m 54s)

oh you can get the yearly one for £150

(20m 57s)

which is a

(20m 58s) Kelly:

Oh, that’s awesome. That’s crazy. Yeah.

(20m 58s) Al:

very good discount on it

(21m)

and it basically has no

(21m 2s)

like it’s got a few restrictions like you can only see

(21m 5s)

each film five times

(21m 6s)

which I’ve never encountered a problem with

(21m 8s) Kelly:

Okay. Okay.

(21m 8s) Al:

you can only have like

(21m 10s)

five pre-bookings at once

(21m 12s)

only very often does that

(21m 15s)

become a problem

(21m 15s)

and then it’s like

(21m 18s)

if you book and you don’t turn

(21m 20s)

up and you do that

(21m 23s)

three times in a two month period

(21m 24s)

then you’re restricted to only booking

(21m 27s)

two at a time right like it’s

(21m 28s) Kelly:

Okay.

(21m 28s) Al:

kind of stuff like that like yeah

(21m 30s)

if you’re going all the time you might

(21m 33s)

encounter some of these problems but

(21m 34s)

if I’m just going once or twice a week at most

(21m 36s)

I don’t encounter these problems right

(21m 38s)

and so it’s absolutely incredible value

(21m 40s)

for that and I’ve seen like

(21m 42s)

I think last year I saw something like 60 films

(21m 44s)

at the cinema

(21m 45s)

which

(21m 47s)

it’s just not something

(21m 49s)

I would do

(21m 49s)

and I’m not going to watch

(21m 51s)

all those films at home

(21m 53s)

wasn’t seeing them at the cinema

(21m 53s)

you know but it’s

(21m 54s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah.

(21m 55s) Al:

it’s not hard to go out once a week

(21m 56s)

to the cinema

(21m 57s)

for me

(21m 58s)

in my experience

(21m 59s)

and my

(22m)

like my

(22m 1s)

life experience

(22m 2s)

it is not hard for me to go out

(22m 4s)

to the cinema once a week

(22m 4s)

yeah

(22m 5s) Kelly:

And it’s nice, because, like, it’s like you time.

(22m 8s)

You get a little you time.

(22m 8s) Al:

yeah

(22m 9s)

yeah

(22m 10s)

and

(22m 10s) Kelly:

But, no, I agree with the point of…

(22m 10s) Al:

and it forces me not to look at my phone

(22m 12s)

for two hours

(22m 13s) Kelly:

Well, that’s the thing is, like, you know, I agree with the point of, like,

(22m 13s) Al:

yeah

(22m 17s) Kelly:

going to the movies takes away all distractions.

(22m 20s) Al:

most of the time

(22m 22s) Kelly:

Most of the time.

(22m 23s) Al:

what was it

(22m 23s) Kelly:

Unfortunately, you can’t control other people at the movies.

(22m 26s) Al:

what was it I was watching this week

(22m 28s)

uh

(22m 29s)

oh

(22m 29s)

Verity

(22m 30s)

I forgot that’s what it was

(22m 30s) Kelly:

Oh, okay, okay.

(22m 32s) Al:

absolutely dreadful film

(22m 34s)

no

(22m 34s) Kelly:

OK, I have.

(22m 35s)

I have not heard good things about it.

(22m 37s) Al:

it’s absolutely dreadful

(22m 38s)

like it was

(22m 39s)

it

(22m 39s)

I

(22m 40s)

oh

(22m 40s)

just so bad

(22m 41s)

on so many levels

(22m 42s)

um

(22m 43s)

like just stupid bad

(22m 45s)

like not even fun bad

(22m 46s) Kelly:

Okay, okay. Because I love like a campy, bad, you know, like a bad horror film.

(22m 46s) Al:

just stupid bad

(22m 47s)

like I

(22m 48s)

no

(22m 50s)

no

(22m 51s)

no

(22m 51s)

no

(22m 53s)

no

(22m 54s)

no

(22m 54s)

it’s not

(22m 54s)

it’s

(22m 55s)

it’s

(22m 55s)

it’s

(22m 56s)

uh

(22m 56s)

um

(22m 57s)

it’s a

(22m 58s)

kind of

(22m 58s)

trashy romance

(22m 59s)

writer goes

(23m) Kelly:

Yeah, but no, I, okay, I will definitely not, don’t worry.

(23m) Al:

I can write a horror book

(23m 1s)

and then they turn that into a film

(23m 3s)

and it’s

(23m 4s)

no

(23m 4s)

no

(23m 5s)

it’s

(23m 5s)

it just

(23m 5s)

it doesn’t

(23m 7s)

it doesn’t

(23m 8s)

no

(23m 8s)

I’m finding it really hard to explain it

(23m 12s)

but no

(23m 12s)

just no

(23m 12s)

no

(23m 13s)

it’s not worth it

(23m 14s)

don’t go and see that film

(23m 15s)

absolutely not

(23m 16s)

and it’s

(23m 18s)

and it’s not even one of those ones where it’s like

(23m 19s)

it’s so bad

(23m 20s)

that it’s fun to watch

(23m 23s)

I presume you never saw megalopolis

(23m 25s)

so that was the

(23m 26s) Kelly:

No, I haven’t seen that one.

(23m 27s)

That was the, um, was that Squarespace?

(23m 28s) Al:

no it wasn’t

(23m 31s) Kelly:

Saisi?

(23m 32s)

Was that?

(23m 32s) Al:

it was um

(23m 33s)

what’s his name

(23m 34s)

I’m so bad with names

(23m 35s)

uh

(23m 35s)

Coppola

(23m 35s) Kelly:

Oh, Coppola?

(23m 36s) Al:

yeah

(23m 36s) Kelly:

Yeah, that’s, yeah.

(23m 37s) Al:

Francis Ford Coppola

(23m 37s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(23m 37s) Al:

it was his film

(23m 38s)

that um

(23m 39s)

was

(23m 40s) Kelly:

But he, like, bankrolled, right?

(23m 40s) Al:

yeah

(23m 41s) Kelly:

Himself?

(23m 42s) Al:

he bankrolled

(23m 42s)

and he’d been writing for

(23m 44s)

like 40 years

(23m 45s)

and oh boy

(23m 46s)

you could tell

(23m 47s)

he’d been writing for 40 years

(23m 48s)

and you could tell

(23m 49s)

which scene was written

(23m 50s)

in which decade

(23m 51s)

laughs

(23m 52s) Kelly:

Oh my god.

(23m 53s) Al:

Because it’s like literally a bit where there’s a satellite

(23m 55s)

and on the satellite is just the logo of the USSR.

(24m 1s)

And you’re like, where are we?

(24m 4s)

Did you write that in the 80s?

(24m 5s) Kelly:

Oh.

(24m 7s) Al:

Like, what are you doing?

(24m 8s)

It’s bizarre decisions.

(24m 10s) Kelly:

But like, also like.

(24m 10s) Al:

And it just, none of it made any sense.

(24m 12s)

There were things that happened

(24m 13s)

that were never referred to again.

(24m 15s)

It was just the most, but it was so bad.

(24m 15s) Kelly:

Oh god.

(24m 18s) Al:

There was so much conversation around it

(24m 20s)

that I just had to go and see it.

(24m 22s) Kelly:

I remember that.

(24m 23s) Al:

Yes.

(24m 23s) Kelly:

But I think, I think that’s like an issue with like, unfortunately, artist ego, where like

(24m 29s)

at a certain point, you have to understand that like, you are not invincible, or like

(24m 35s)

you need like this, like, clearly, he did not have anybody critiquing him or giving him

(24m 40s)

feedback or, you know, or was not listening to anybody who wanted to edit this.

(24m 43s) Al:

Yeah, yeah.

(24m 46s) Kelly:

Like, that’s, that’s, again, I think it goes back to the point of perspectives.

(24m 52s)

You don’t have any of those perspectives added in, you just end up in this weird vacuum.

(24m 56s) Al:

Yeah.

(24m 56s) Kelly:

And I don’t think anybody wants to live in a vacuum.

(25m) Al:

I think there’s no, no.

(25m 1s) Kelly:

And I don’t think people want to watch things that come out of a vacuum.

(25m 4s) Al:

I think there’s also a problem where some artistic people feel like the art is their life.

(25m 11s)

And if they’re not doing it, they are not living.

(25m 14s)

And I think that sometimes people need to accept that you should retire.

(25m 18s) Kelly:

Yes. Yeah. And I think that all that point also is like, they don’t want other people putting their hands on their work because they want it to be like a reflection of them completely or something like, you know what I mean? Like, which again goes back to the ego of it all like.

(25m 26s) Al:

yeah yeah yeah for sure yeah how much of how much of these classics from the you know the 70s and

(25m 35s) Kelly:

But

(25m 35s)

Exactly.

(25m 39s) Al:

the 80s how much of that is the director and how much is the writer and the director and the editor

(25m 45s)

all working together because none of them were world famous at that point and they were all just

(25m 48s) Kelly:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, the rest of everybody else. Yeah, exactly. They’ll, they only get brought up if they write like four movies in a row that are like hits and then it’s like, maybe they’ll, they’ll get a mention.

(25m 50s) Al:

good at what they do but they but what they do isn’t making an entire film and I think sometimes

(25m 56s)

sometimes directors think of themselves as the person because we put them up there right we got

(26m)

here are the actors and here’s the director and it’s like who’s the writer ah who cares about that

(26m 6s)

it’s the director

(26m 9s)

yeah yeah yeah exactly oh man all right cool uh what were we talking about

(26m 22s) Kelly:

Well, what are you up to, Al?

(26m 22s) Al:

oh that was the expanse that’s

(26m 26s)

that’s what we were talking about um what have I been up to I have obviously been playing fields

(26m 26s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(26m 32s) Al:

of mystria i’ve also been playing some more beat saber with my new steam frame um I think that’s

(26m 38s)

all games wise um obviously media wise obviously I talked about digger I absolutely everybody should

(26m 44s)

go see digger um and i’m just double checking oh I started the avatar seven havens yesterday

(26m 52s) Kelly:

Ah, I have not started that yet.

(26m 52s) Al:

because the first three episodes came out.

(26m 54s)

Oh, come on.

(26m 56s)

Come on.

(26m 56s) Kelly:

I know.

(26m 59s) Al:

It’s like, you have no reason to watch.

(27m 2s) Kelly:

I do, though.

(27m 3s) Al:

Completely unrelated to you.

(27m 4s) Kelly:

I have to watch it.

(27m 7s)

I have to watch it.

(27m 8s)

No, it’s funny because we were running the promos at work the other day,

(27m 11s)

and I was like, ooh, this comes out soon.

(27m 12s) Al:

Yeah, yeah.

(27m 14s)

I will not say much because I don’t want to spoil it,

(27m 17s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(27m 18s) Al:

but I’m in love.

(27m 22s)

I think it’s great.

(27m 22s) Kelly:

Okay.

(27m 23s) Al:

I think it’s fantastic.

(27m 24s)

I’m so excited.

(27m 24s) Kelly:

Okay.

(27m 24s) Al:

and I saw that then

(27m 26s)

announced um they’ve renewed it for seasons three and four as well so we’re getting assuming that

(27m 29s) Kelly:

Oh, good.

(27m 31s) Al:

they don’t go back on this because who knows who can actually trust uh don’t want don’t want to get

(27m 33s) Kelly:

I was about to say…

(27m 35s) Al:

you into trouble but who knows who we can trust we can talk about that off air uh but assuming assuming

(27m 35s) Kelly:

It’s okay.

(27m 39s)

There’s some choice.

(27m 40s)

I have a nickname for the man in charge.

(27m 46s)

Yeah.

(27m 48s)

Yeah, hopefully it doesn’t get the Korra treatment, you know,

(27m 49s) Al:

that they don’t go back on it yeah yeah

(27m 52s) Kelly:

and get its seasons jinked around all around.

(27m 56s) Al:

yeah yeah yeah so hopefully hopefully assuming they don’t go back on them we can get a nice good

(28m)

four season arc they’ve got their plan and we can get through it I did you didn’t watch it I i managed

(28m 2s) Kelly:

Okay. Did you watch the movie?

(28m 4s)

Because I didn’t, I did not watch the movie, even though it got leaked.

(28m 9s) Al:

you’ll be proud of me I managed not to watch the leak I was strong I refused I was like no I am not

(28m 12s) Kelly:

Oh.

(28m 18s) Al:

going to do this because here’s the reason you couldn’t log on letterboxd yet

(28m 26s)

and of course I need to log on letterboxd no no I waited I waited I had uh I think like just over

(28m 28s) Kelly:

Of course.

(28m 32s) Al:

a year ago I they did uh um like an annual offer for paramount plus here and so I was like yeah okay

(28m 39s) Kelly:

Mmm.

(28m 41s) Al:

i’ll go for i’m sure there’s always star trek stuff is there always star trek stuff there was always

(28m 45s)

star trek stuff um um so I was like yeah i’m sure i’ll get enough out of it in the year and it’s just

(28m 53s)

lasting till like the weekdays

(28m 56s)

after uh the finale of avatar seven havens so I was like well i’ve already paid for it i’m gonna wait

(29m 4s)

until it’s actually on paramount plus and I can watch the full res version the final version not

(29m 7s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(29m 9s) Al:

this leaked version so I was strong I managed it I enjoyed it it was it was good it was not like

(29m 10s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(29m 15s) Al:

groundbreaking or amazing but it’s fun to come back to these characters I mean to be fair I only

(29m 19s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(29m 21s) Al:

started watching avatar maybe like four years ago or something like that um so it’s not like a

(29m 24s) Kelly:

Okay.

(29m 26s) Al:

childhood thing for me but it’s it’s it was fun I enjoyed it

(29m 29s) Kelly:

Yeah, I assumed it was, um, I just, you know, there was so much chit-chat around, you know, the Korra seasons because people did not like them and then also wanted more Avatar Aang.

(29m 40s) Al:

yeah yeah yeah I don’t know if it satisfies them though

(29m 45s) Kelly:

And I think this kind of feeds those people.

(29m 49s)

I mean, I don’t think there’s any way to ever satisfy them without creating just a whole other season or series of them as adults.

(29m 51s) Al:

no you’re right you’re right yeah I even then even then I don’t know because I think that like

(30m 1s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(30m 1s) Al:

the original was such a unique thing and I think the problem is I think

(30m 4s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(30m 5s)

And that’s the thing, it’s hard to, it’s hard to follow that.

(30m 10s) Al:

part of the problem is that people don’t want adult ang either they want kitty ang

(30m 12s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(30m 14s)

No, they want that, they want baby Aang, yeah.

(30m 17s)

They want more of that.

(30m 19s)

And if you make more of that, eventually you’re just going to

(30m 22s) Al:

I think that happens straight away like I think I think the thing about avatar the last airbender

(30m 28s)

is that i’m trying to make sure that I do the right name because of course the film is called

(30m 32s)

avatar ang the last airbender I think goodness me get good naming um I think that it not to say

(30m 35s) Kelly:

Yes. Yeah.

(30m 43s) Al:

it’s perfect but it is unique in its vision and its completion of that vision

(30m 48s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(30m 52s) Al:

within what they had which is why i’m excited about avatar seven havens having its four seasons

(30m 58s)

because like obviously that’s what they want to go obviously that’s what they wanted for Korra

(31m 2s)

four seasons four books it’s the it’s the avatar way to do things right so if you have the vision

(31m 6s) Kelly:

Yeah

(31m 7s) Al:

for that I want them to be able to do that yeah yeah yeah but I also think that part of the problem

(31m 9s) Kelly:

Yeah, exactly and if the studio is signing off on

(31m 16s) Al:

is that a lot of people who love it watched it when they were kids and actually what they’re not

(31m 20s) Kelly:

Yes.

(31m 20s) Al:

looking for more…

(31m 22s)

They’re looking for being a kid again.

(31m 24s) Kelly:

Yeah, no, it’s nostalgia chasing, which is, no.

(31m 27s) Al:

You’re not…

(31m 28s)

You can’t get that back.

(31m 29s)

I’m really sorry.

(31m 30s)

I know it’s sad.

(31m 31s)

I cry about it daily.

(31m 33s) Kelly:

It’s, it is.

(31m 33s) Al:

But you can’t get back to who you were.

(31m 35s)

You have to…

(31m 36s)

You have to love who you’ve become

(31m 38s)

and how you got there.

(31m 40s)

And yes, love that past version of yourself

(31m 42s)

and love what they experienced.

(31m 43s)

And it’s fine to be sad

(31m 45s)

that you don’t have that anymore.

(31m 46s)

But don’t keep…

(31m 46s) Kelly:

no absolutely and I think i’m i’m a i’m a quora defender I love quora so I think that that feeling

(31m 47s) Al:

Spend your life wishing for it

(31m 49s)

so that you don’t live in the now.

(31m 52s)

I agree.

(32m) Kelly:

is kind of what holds back some people from enjoying quora because quora forces you to

(32m 5s)

deal with a more adult version you know what I mean and and people don’t want to go those

(32m 13s)

those issues and like those more adult

(32m 16s) Al:

Yeah.

(32m 16s) Kelly:

problems. Oh, no.

(32m 18s) Al:

So I think the thing about Korra is that now we could talk about Korra being a symbol of misogyny and that she gets much more flack than Aang for what she did because she’s a woman.

(32m 30s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, yep.

(32m 36s) Al:

Right.

(32m 36s)

Like that is undoubtedly part of it.

(32m 40s)

Now, at this point in time, we are going to ignore the premise of…

(32m 46s)

…of Avatar 7 Havens in that what they say in the marketing is that there was a cataclysm caused by Korra.

(32m 55s)

Now, I’m saying we’re ignoring that because that is what they’re saying and that is what people are saying in the show.

(33m 2s)

But I am a strong believer that that is going to turn out not to be true.

(33m 6s) Kelly:

I also had that feeling, and I think that might be a misdirection or a misinterpretation by, like, people, like, you know what I mean? Like, they fell victim to propaganda, essentially.

(33m 6s) Al:

We shall see.

(33m 12s)

I think so. I think so.

(33m 17s)

Absolutely. 100%.

(33m 19s)

So I think we need to ignore that for just now.

(33m 22s)

If it turns out that it is true, I will change my mind and say that, yes, sure, Korra was a worse avatar than Aang.

(33m 29s)

I will accept it at that point.

(33m 29s) Kelly:

laughs

(33m 30s) Al:

But if we ignore that, which is not being proven that this is actually what has happened, I think that Korra did nothing worse than Aang.

(33m 38s)

Now, yes, her breaking the connection with the previous avatars is disastrous.

(33m 44s)

It is horrible.

(33m 44s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm. Yeah.

(33m 45s) Al:

It is distraught.

(33m 46s)

It destroys her, right?

(33m 48s)

Like, you see it on and how, like, what I find, what I love about that show, right?

(33m 55s)

Let’s not talk about Cora.

(33m 55s)

Let’s talk about the show.

(33m 57s)

Because I want to remind people that you don’t watch shows just to like people.

(34m 3s)

You watch shows to see stories and to see people and to live experiences.

(34m 7s)

And what I think I love about that show is that it shows her doing that.

(34m 12s)

She breaks it.

(34m 13s)

And that’s it.

(34m 14s)

It’s gone.

(34m 15s)

There is no going back.

(34m 15s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(34m 16s) Al:

There is no fixing that.

(34m 17s)

And sometimes that is what happens.

(34m 18s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(34m 20s) Al:

Sometimes we make mistakes and we break things that literally can never be fixed.

(34m 25s)

And that’s horrible.

(34m 26s)

And it breaks her.

(34m 26s) Kelly:

yeah yeah yeah and and I agree like I think that that’s what I mean by like these are more adult

(34m 27s) Al:

You can see it in her face the rest of the show that she is.

(34m 32s)

She hates herself for it.

(34m 39s) Kelly:

issues like your actions and your consequences and and how you as a person survive them I think

(34m 46s)

is is really like the underlying themes throughout cora honestly and it is harder to contend with as

(34m 56s)

because you it’s not black and white like it’s very gray it’s

(35m 1s) Al:

absolutely because that’s the thing because because the original was hey here’s this young

(35m 7s)

boy who’s the savior of the world watch as he goes and saves the world you know and yeah sure there’s

(35m 8s) Kelly:

mm-hmm yeah yeah and like

(35m 12s)

mm-hmm

(35m 13s) Al:

there’s little bits in here and there right they all of them have to contend contend with their

(35m 15s) Kelly:

yes yes

(35m 18s) Al:

darker sides um absolutely but it’s still very kid-friendly stuff maybe except the bloodbending

(35m 20s) Kelly:

yes and yeah yeah yeah but like it’s also not as tumultuous in like a sense of mental morality

(35m 33s)

like there’s obviously

(35m 35s)

like you said there’s certain points but none of those

(35m 38s)

points are the same as

(35m 39s)

because again it’s for a younger audience

(35m 41s)

so when you get an older audience you want things to

(35m 44s)

match the audience

(35m 44s)

and I think you know unfortunately what

(35m 47s)

they tried to do that with Cora and people

(35m 50s)

were so focused on wanting the younger

(35m 51s)

show

(35m 53s)

for when they were a younger person

(35m 55s)

they didn’t want to deal with the idea

(35m 57s)

of growing up and

(35m 59s)

meanwhile when I watched it you know I was

(36m 2s)

I was pretty young

(36m 3s)

I was like these are all very

(36m 5s)

deep themes that like

(36m 8s)

sound within me

(36m 9s) Al:

yeah yeah for sure I also think that you experience this there’s still stuff I think

(36m 9s) Kelly:

even if obviously we’re not sharing the same experience

(36m 17s) Al:

this is what the original show does really well is it does that I want to say like the thing that

(36m 22s)

pixar films do well a lot which is where yes they are clearly designed for kids but there’s still

(36m 26s)

stuff for adults in them as well and you you you appreciate them more as an adult um that you know

(36m 28s) Kelly:

Oh, yeah, absolutely.

(36m 33s) Al:

it’s not just mindless nonsense for kids which i’m not saying is bad I like mindless nonsense

(36m 36s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(36m 38s)

Of course.

(36m 39s) Al:

but I also like things when they have more to it as well and actually it’s really interesting coming

(36m 44s)

to avatar as an like not just an adult but like a full adult right like I was I was over 30 when i

(36m 52s)

started watching it um I experienced it completely differently to you for example and probably to

(36m 58s) Kelly:

Yeah, that is very true, honestly. Because I watched Avatar when I was, like, in my mid-teens, and then I watched Korra when I was in my early 20s. And so now this would be, you know, my mid-30s, the next iteration.

(36m 58s) Al:

most people that ever watched it

(37m 5s)

Mm-hmm.

(37m 8s)

Yeah.

(37m 12s)

Mm-hmm.

(37m 13s)

Yeah.

(37m 14s) Kelly:

So I, you know, personally, I hope that it continues to grow. I mean, like, that’s even, like, that’s my favorite kind of music is when musicians that I’ve listened to for years grow with their artists, grow with their audience, you know, like.

(37m 29s) Al:

Yeah, absolutely.

(37m 31s)

I feel like maybe after Seven Havens is out, season one,

(37m 35s)

maybe we need to have a bonus episode to talk about how we feel about it.

(37m 38s) Kelly:

Mm, yes, that would be fun. Yes. Yes, I will. Maybe I’ll watch it on my trip as like a before bed kind of thing.

(37m 40s) Al:

Let’s see how things go.

(37m 41s)

So that means you have to watch it.

(37m 48s)

Nice.

(37m 50s)

I’m also, also just as a side note,

(37m 53s)

obviously we’ve only got three episodes so far.

(37m 54s)

I’m enjoying the three episodes a week.

(37m 56s)

I think it works because they’re short episodes.

(37m 57s) Kelly:

I personally love when a new show comes out like that.

(38m 3s)

Of course I like binging, but I think that we as people can do things better whenever.

(38m 10s) Al:

yeah I think I think it feels like the a nice balance of I think so three three 20 minute

(38m 15s) Kelly:

And three is a good amount.

(38m 18s) Al:

episodes feels like a good balance of things it’s like I got a decent amount on the first day I felt

(38m 23s)

like I was getting a good idea of what the story was but I also i’m not miles ahead of it like i’m

(38m 28s)

not finished right and if you were if you were to start watching in a week you know you could

(38m 30s) Kelly:

Yeah, and you get to sit with it.

(38m 32s)

Yeah.

(38m 33s) Al:

easily catch up before the next episodes come out

(38m 35s) Kelly:

Yeah, but I like that, like, you get 60 minutes of content that you get to sit with then, you know, and figure out your feelings on before the next set.

(38m 43s) Al:

yeah I don’t think I think with these 20 especially with this show with avatar just

(38m 49s)

in general I feel like one 20 minute episode a week would not be enough i’d be i’d be like

(38m 53s) Kelly:

No, no, no, no, no.

(38m 54s) Al:

clawing my eyes out looking for more you know

(38m 56s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(38m 57s) Al:

all right that’s what we’ve been up to good thing there was no news because we’ve got 45 minutes so

(38m 58s) Kelly:

No, I agree.

(38m 59s)

I think that is a very good amount of episode to get.

(39m 5s)

Yippee!

(39m 6s)

Yippee!

(39m 8s) Al:

All right, let’s talk about Fields of Mystria.

Fields Of Mistria

(39m 13s) Al:

1.0.

(39m 14s)

So, let’s start off by a little temperature check where we are with things and how we feel overall.

(39m 22s)

Because, obviously, just a reminder, two years ago, in fact, when was the episode we did?

(39m 27s) Kelly:

I think it was like around this time, honestly.

(39m 29s) Al:

I think so, but I want to get an accurate, I’m just giving a little search, the 4th of December.

(39m 37s)

So, a couple months later.

(39m 37s) Kelly:

Okay, so…

(39m 39s) Al:

So, not quite two years since our last episode on this game.

(39m 41s) Kelly:

Very close, though.

(39m 43s) Al:

We had both played through basically all of the content in the Early Access.

(39m 47s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(39m 48s) Al:

I think you were sitting at about 100 hours and I was sitting at about 50 hours.

(39m 54s) Kelly:

Yeah, because I had decided to, I was like, didn’t have another game to play, I think. So I was just like, let me see how many different breeds of animals I can create. And I just spent a bunch of time breeding animals to see what colors I could get.

(40m 7s) Al:

fair enough uh whereas I was just my my problem with these games is I i actually hate the start

(40m 17s)

of farming games um I hate spring one first spring so I like speed run them so it’s like

(40m 20s) Kelly:

I see.

(40m 22s) Al:

I was further on further on in the year I think uh than you were uh but but I had less time because

(40m 29s)

I just like speed run the first spring

(40m 31s) Kelly:

Yeah, I’m, like, out there, you know, out in the fields until, uh, until 1.50 every morning, every night, so…

(40m 37s) Al:

yeah yeah yeah okay so um where are you now then having you know you’ve had a couple of weeks of 1.0

(40m 46s) Kelly:

Um, I’ve, so I’ve surpassed, I think, all of the walls that I hit, we hit from early access, but I have not completed everything. So it is nice because I get to see beyond the veil, I guess, and what we’re waiting for.

(41m 2s) Al:

Yeah so I guess the good, the kind of easy ways of figuring out where we are roughly in the game is we’ve got the town rank and we’ve got the, like where are you in the mines because both of them kind of almost go hand in hand.

(41m 10s) Kelly:

yeah yeah so I am I think maybe like 61 or 62 or something like that in town rank and then I just

(41m 25s)

found the the last stupid thing to get to the the next cave the next mine level um so I just am

(41m 35s)

I just finished

(41m 37s)

I’m about to go past level 60

(41m 40s)

the mines, sorry

(41m 41s)

so I just opened

(41m 45s)

Deep Woods

(41m 47s)

I don’t know if that’s a spoiler and you want to cut that out

(41m 47s) Al:

Yeah, okay, cool.

(41m 49s) Kelly:

yeah, and it’s on the map

(41m 51s) Al:

I mean, I don’t think it is because you go there and it tells you what it is

(41m 54s)

and you just can’t get in there, I don’t think.

(41m 56s) Kelly:

the name is on the map

(41m 56s) Al:

Let’s not spoil what it is in there, but I think, yeah.

(41m 57s) Kelly:

yeah

(41m 59s)

yeah, yeah, yeah

(42m) Al:

Okay, cool.

(42m 1s)

Right, okay.

(42m 1s) Kelly:

mm-hmm

(42m 2s) Al:

So you started fresh and went up to this point.

(42m 5s)

I actually resumed my save because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get as far as I wanted to

(42m 6s) Kelly:

okay

(42m 10s) Al:

by starting afresh because, like always, I procrastinated.

(42m 13s) Kelly:

That makes sense because I saw your achievements and I was like, wow, how did he get so much further than me?

(42m 17s) Al:

So I am at level 85 town rank and I am level 90 in the mines.

(42m 23s) Kelly:

Okay.

(42m 28s) Al:

There’s actually, I don’t want to spoil what it is,

(42m 31s)

but it’s actually really interesting when you get to level 90

(42m 33s)

and I want to hear your thoughts when you get there

(42m 35s)

because it’s very different from the rest of it.

(42m 39s)

Okay, so what are your feelings?

(42m 41s)

Because I think we’re obviously not really going to talk story and spoilers

(42m 46s) Kelly:

Mhm.

(42m 46s) Al:

because I think…

(42m 47s)

I think we can maybe talk about overall how we’re feeling but not get into specifics and I think that the story is fine and I’m not blown away by anything but it’s nice for it to be there, I guess.

(43m) Kelly:

Yeah, it’s like, I feel like with these games, I’m not looking for some sort of groundbreaking story.

(43m 5s)

Like if it happens, it’s nice.

(43m 6s) Al:

No.

(43m 8s) Kelly:

But I like the characters overall, you know, I do think we talked about some of the story the last time, too.

(43m 16s) Al:

I can’t remember what we talked about with that because I was focusing on I was focusing on mechanics.

(43m 19s) Kelly:

I know, I feel like we had to have talked about it, but I think we did talk a lot about mechanics.

(43m 24s) Al:

I think in terms of characters, I think what I said was I don’t really care about any of the characters and so I’ve not really looked into any of the romance.

(43m 30s) Kelly:

So, I know the last time I dated Marsh, or he was like my, March, and he was my romantic interest.

(43m 37s) Al:

Mm-hmm.

(43m 40s) Kelly:

But I have put zero effort into any romantic interest this game, which I’m just like, I got things to do, you know?

(43m 48s) Al:

Yeah, I think that’s the thing is I find it not necessarily an interesting mechanic in and of itself. What I find interesting is the learning more about the people, but I don’t care about any of these.

(43m 54s) Kelly:

Yes. I agree. That’s usually what drives me is like wanting to find out more information.

(44m 7s)

I will say if we’re going to talk about, I guess, relationships in that sense, though, that I do really enjoy the mechanic of Friday night at the inn and Saturday market.

(44m 18s) Al:

Mm-hmm.

(44m 18s) Kelly:

Because you can so easily get every single person in town, you know, and then.

(44m 23s) Al:

Yeah.

(44m 24s) Kelly:

And that’s like, at least you get a little progression there. So I think that’s a very minimal effort way to continue to make sure that your relationships progress, albeit slowly.

(44m 27s) Al:

Yeah.

(44m 35s)

yeah that’s fair that’s fair I do feel like the the saturday market it kind of just feels like

(44m 41s)

did you ever play uh grand bazaar story seasons grand bazaar or the harvest seasons harvest moon

(44m 46s) Kelly:

No.

(44m 47s) Al:

no um it kind of feels like it’s in I can’t I don’t think this was ever in the early access when

(44m 53s)

we when we played it but it just kind of feels like in a reaction to that it’s like oh grand

(44m 58s)

bazaar was fun let’s do that but we’re not actually going to do that and instead it’s just

(45m 2s)

going to be other people because the thing about grand bazaar was

(45m 5s)

you had this weekly cycle of the only time you sell stuff is at the bazaar every saturday

(45m 10s) Kelly:

Oh, so it’s like a big deal.

(45m 10s) Al:

and that’s how you make your money it was a big deal and I personally thought especially in the i

(45m 16s)

didn’t play the original but the remake um was it two years ago maybe I thought it did a really good

(45m 21s)

job of making me actually care about selling stuff um it was a fun balance of kind of stress

(45m 24s) Kelly:

okay yeah because you have to think yeah like because you’re like oh I gotta sell stuff I gotta

(45m 31s)

have money for the week you know like that’s I mean there’s moments where like this I think this

(45m 32s) Al:

Yeah, yeah.

(45m 36s) Kelly:

is like a common farming game issue where like you know obviously if you mess up and you don’t

(45m 40s)

sell something the night before and then you have no money you’re virtually screwed but like not

(45m 43s) Al:

yeah it’s just another day yeah

(45m 45s) Kelly:

necessarily because you couldn’t get money other ways like if you really desperately need to there

(45m 48s) Al:

but but also it’s just it’s just another day right whereas whereas the thing about the bizarre was

(45m 51s) Kelly:

are

(45m 52s)

exactly

(45m 54s)

you can survive

(45m 55s)

the day

(45m 55s)

yeah

(45m 55s) Al:

it was a whole it was a week you had to wait a whole week and and I found that an interesting

(45m 57s) Kelly:

that’s what

(45m 58s)

I’m saying

(45m 59s)

yeah

(46m)

that’s

(46m)

I see

(46m) Al:

thing and it almost feels like they went that was interesting let’s do that but we don’t do that we

(46m 4s)

it’s just we’re gonna have the market and it’s like okay but the market then is just extra shops

(46m 5s) Kelly:

yeah

(46m 8s)

it is

(46m 10s) Al:

every week

(46m 11s)

okay

(46m 11s) Kelly:

I will say

(46m 13s)

I feel like

(46m 14s)

the purpose

(46m 15s)

of the market

(46m 15s)

for me

(46m 16s)

is like

(46m 16s)

the relationship

(46m 18s)

boost

(46m 19s)

of like

(46m 19s)

talking to

(46m 19s)

everybody

(46m 20s)

no problem

(46m 21s)

and like

(46m 21s)

making it easy

(46m 22s) Al:

I get that.

(46m 24s) Kelly:

to everybody

(46m 24s)

their things

(46m 25s)

from their quests

(46m 26s)

and then

(46m 26s) Al:

Yeah.

(46m 27s)

No, I get that.

(46m 28s)

I get that in theory.

(46m 29s) Kelly:

buy coffee

(46m 29s)

that’s like

(46m 30s)

my three things

(46m 31s)

that I use

(46m 31s)

the market for

(46m 31s) Al:

Oh, you know, I’ve got the Especial Machine yet.

(46m 32s) Kelly:

no I don’t

(46m 34s)

have it yet

(46m 35s)

you know

(46m 35s) Al:

I’ve got them.

(46m 36s)

I just got the Especial Machine.

(46m 37s)

It’s great.

(46m 37s) Kelly:

I didn’t want

(46m 38s) Al:

Love it.

(46m 38s) Kelly:

to look it up

(46m 39s)

because I was like

(46m 39s)

oh when am I

(46m 40s)

gonna where is

(46m 41s)

like the coffee

(46m 41s)

I can’t be

(46m 42s)

buying coffee

(46m 43s) Al:

The best bit is you can buy a Especial Machine

(46m 47s)

and you can buy the crafting recipe for the Especial Machine.

(46m 51s)

And I think if you crafted

(46m 51s) Kelly:

Oh.

(46m 52s) Al:

multiple, each of them will give you a coffee

(46m 54s)

every day for free.

(46m 55s) Kelly:

Oh, okay.

(46m 57s)

But I do like, I don’t know, again, if you want to talk about this,

(47m)

but I do like the update that the market gets at the end.

(47m 4s)

Or, like, I guess that I just got for it.

(47m 7s) Al:

oh did you just did you unlock the last one I have not i’m so close how would no no you can’t

(47m 9s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(47m 12s)

Wait, wait, not the last one.

(47m 13s) Al:

have unlocked the last one yeah because I was I was just going to say because i’m literally i’m

(47m 14s) Kelly:

I guess the one that gets you two more vendors.

(47m 19s)

Okay.

(47m 20s) Al:

i’m just about to finish the next one and and it and it requires stuff that you can only get

(47m 21s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(47m 22s)

I just did that one.

(47m 25s)

Okay, that makes sense.

(47m 25s) Al:

from level 80 so I was like how have you managed to do that yeah

(47m 29s) Kelly:

I did buy gold bars because I was like, I just want the freaking market open.

(47m 33s) Al:

Yeah, fair enough. I will be honest. I’ve done that before as well.

(47m 34s) Kelly:

Like, I just want to, I want to see.

(47m 37s)

Because, like, I was so, because, like, I was, I had done the level 40 to 60 in the mine so many times looking for one item to progress it.

(47m 46s) Al:

yeah yeah yeah the

(47m 47s) Kelly:

And I was getting so fed up and I was like, I just want the market to be open and it’s Friday night.

(47m 51s)

I needed to open.

(47m 52s)

And luckily, Balor’s cart was selling gold bars and I said, okay, it’s time to go.

(47m 53s) Al:

yeah the the other thing as well is actually this is um this is why I quite like if I can go back to

(48m 3s)

a game with the existing save and there’s new stuff because I really love the satisfaction of

(48m 8s)

I came into this what a week and a half ago I came in to my save which I hadn’t done anything

(48m 16s)

since the very first version of early access and I had 300 000 monies and so I was like I can buy

(48m 23s)

everything it was so satisfying and

(48m 24s) Kelly:

Yeah, that is so nice.

(48m 27s)

But I think for me, I don’t know, I like the challenge of struggling, if that makes sense.

(48m 32s) Al:

Sure, but I’d already done that.

(48m 33s)

I’d already done the struggle.

(48m 34s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

(48m 35s) Al:

Now I get the joy after the struggle.

(48m 37s)

I have the money now.

(48m 38s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah.

(48m 40s)

No, I don’t know.

(48m 40s)

I had this issue.

(48m 41s)

I think this all started with, like, The Sims for me when I was, like, a kid, where I would, like, use the cheat code to get a bunch of money to build a house, and then I’d be like, well, now I’m bored.

(48m 46s) Al:

oh no see I cared I only cared about the house I didn’t care about actually running the people

(48m 54s) Kelly:

I was like, I like earning the stuff, I guess.

(48m 55s) Al:

no

(48m 57s)

we are no we are not the same uh okay so I forgot where we were one layer back

(49m 9s) Kelly:

I think we just started talking, and then completely, yeah.

(49m 11s) Al:

We just kept going. Okay, let’s

(49m 14s)

go through. I’ve got a list

(49m 16s)

of things that we complained about that have

(49m 18s)

changed, that have been improved since

(49m 20s)

early access. And I want to talk about

(49m 21s)

whether these things have actually improved it

(49m 23s)

or whether they’re just kind of

(49m 26s)

they’re a thing that exists.

(49m 27s)

So there were a few things that I’d complained about

(49m 29s)

the farming. The first was that there’s basically

(49m 32s)

no automation.

(49m 33s) Kelly:

Yes, no sprinklers.

(49m 33s) Al:

And it was very frustrating.

(49m 35s)

Now, the good thing is they do have now

(49m 37s)

watering statues.

(49m 39s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah, I have not opened those yet.

(49m 41s)

I did get the farm statue.

(49m 42s) Al:

You can’t…

(49m 43s)

Yeah, I would…

(49m 44s) Kelly:

I got the barn statue.

(49m 46s) Al:

Yeah, I think you can get

(49m 48s)

the watering statues now if you figure out

(49m 50s)

where they are. You’re at the point

(49m 52s)

now where you can get it.

(49m 54s)

If you want me to spoil where

(49m 56s)

it is later, I will do that, but I will not do it

(49m 57s) Kelly:

no I’ll maybe I’ll look and see and then if I can’t find it yeah yeah yeah yeah I will

(49m 58s) Al:

without…

(50m)

Yeah, let me know. Let me know.

(50m 2s)

Let me know.

(50m 3s) Kelly:

okay

(50m 3s) Al:

So they work basically like sprinklers.

(50m 7s)

There’s two versions.

(50m 8s)

There’s a 5x5

(50m 10s)

and a…

(50m 12s)

8x8? No, 7x7.

(50m 16s)

There’s two sizes.

(50m 17s)

And you can unlock them both

(50m 20s)

pretty quickly after one another.

(50m 22s)

But they are powered by

(50m 25s)

the…

(50m 25s)

these like…

(50m 26s)

the gems that you make

(50m 27s)

with the magic,

(50m 28s) Kelly:

The essence? Yeah.

(50m 29s) Al:

the essence.

(50m 30s)

And so it’s like

(50m 31s)

a certain amount will last one day

(50m 34s)

and then a certain amount will last five

(50m 35s)

and a certain amount…

(50m 36s)

so you can like make…

(50m 38s)

Have you unlocked

(50m 39s)

the forge,

(50m 40s)

the stone forge

(50m 42s)

at the mine?

(50m 43s) Kelly:

Yes, in the mine. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(50m 43s) Al:

Yeah.

(50m 45s) Kelly:

Which is pretty nice. I like that.

(50m 46s) Al:

them there.

(50m 47s)

It’s really nice.

(50m 48s)

I love it.

(50m 48s)

It’s great.

(50m 50s)

You…

(50m 51s)

Especially as I have so much money

(50m 52s)

I can just buy stone

(50m 53s)

and turn it into all those things.

(50m 54s) Kelly:

Oh, yeah, that’s sick. That’s awesome. I didn’t even think about that because I’m at the point where I was just struggling because I think I unlocked a bunch of things at once. And I was like, oh, my God, my whole life is just cutting down trees and mining. That’s all I do.

(50m 57s) Al:

They also…

(50m 58s)

The carpenter…

(50m 59s)

Yes.

(51m 3s)

I…

(51m 4s)

I…

(51m 4s)

Yeah.

(51m 6s)

Yeah.

(51m 9s)

Yeah, I know.

(51m 10s)

Fair enough.

(51m 11s)

the uh the carpenter also now I don’t know whether this was the case before because I can’t remember

(51m 16s)

but they now sell bundles of a hundred rock stone so you can just buy that I don’t think they did

(51m 19s) Kelly:

I don’t think they used to do that. Yeah, I don’t think they did.

(51m 22s) Al:

either but it’s great so it doesn’t mean it means you don’t have to just hold the button you can just

(51m 26s)

like press five times and get 500 stone it’s great I love it um so that yeah so the forge is the stone

(51m 32s)

forge is where you make your your little essence gem things um and so you then throw it on the

(51m 37s)

statue and then it will do its job just like a sprinkler it does what it does I it’s fine I think

(51m 40s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm, okay.

(51m 43s) Al:

it’s fine. I’m

(51m 46s)

mixed on the essence

(51m 48s)

requirement because I’m like

(51m 49s)

I’ve gone through all this effort to get this

(51m 51s)

and now I have to like keep it topped up

(51m 53s)

feels a little bit

(51m 55s)

frustrating but

(51m 57s)

it’s fine. It is what it is. But what

(51m 59s)

I’m not a fan of is how far

(52m 2s)

through the game you have to go to get.

(52m 4s) Kelly:

That’s so like I’m kind of upset right now that I’m thinking about this because I planned out my farm you know what I mean like I have my trees all lined up in such a nice little way and like roads lined out so that things will stop growing in places and it’s like I’m literally you said that I was like oh my god I’m.

(52m 11s) Al:

Yep.

(52m 23s)

but also you have to the crafting for them requires rare forageables from the mine

(52m 31s)

so I have not been able to craft a second one yet

(52m 35s) Kelly:

oh no

(52m 36s) Al:

so it almost feels like it’s like here you go because you asked for it

(52m 40s)

but we don’t actually want you to use it and that’s really frustrating

(52m 42s) Kelly:

yeah and like that is because like the watering can is great that it can do like so much more

(52m 49s)

but it doesn’t it still uses the amount of energy like the same amount of energy so much energy

(52m 53s) Al:

much energy so much energy I don’t understand why it continues to use so much energy because I have

(53m)

uh six plots of six by six um and um that uses my entire energy for a day and I have and I have like

(53m 4s) Kelly:

Oh my god.

(53m 8s)

Yeah, I have…

(53m 10s) Al:

four upgrades to my energy and it still uses all of that energy every single day that it’s not raining

(53m 16s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(53m 17s)

I have three plots of six by three, four plots of six by three, five plots of six by three, and then a three by three.

(53m 28s)

And that takes up, like, at least almost half of my energy every day.

(53m 33s) Al:

it’s it’s maddening to me I do not understand why the energy doesn’t drop

(53m 39s) Kelly:

I don’t know.

(53m 40s)

All I know is, like, right now I’m at the end of second year spring, and I’m like, oh, my God.

(53m 44s)

I don’t have to water too

(53m 46s)

Rows of plants

(53m 46s)

I can go do other things

(53m 48s) Al:

yeah now I will say it does you do it doesn’t make you do it really quickly now right like i

(53m 48s) Kelly:

My day is better

(53m 50s)

Yes

(53m 55s)

Yeah

(53m 55s) Al:

get I get my six by six by six I get them done in seconds which is good exactly exactly and it’s like

(53m 56s) Kelly:

Oh it’s done so fast

(54m)

Which is nice

(54m 1s)

But I have to eat food afterwards

(54m 3s)

Yeah

(54m 5s) Al:

it’s so frustrating because it’s so much um and I feel like i’m kind of I feel like i’m in the end

(54m 11s)

near the end game now and i’m still running my entire energy out from just watering and

(54m 18s)

200 crops it’s not an insane number of crops

(54m 18s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(54m 22s)

No, I feel like, so that, that is one thing, like, I am doing so much less farming in this

(54m 26s)

game just because of that.

(54m 28s)

Because I’m like, I gotta limit how much time and energy I’m spending on farming every morning,

(54m 35s)

especially because I have, uh, the animals to go take care of after.

(54m 39s) Al:

okay let’s jump to them then because there’s a few things that they added for them which I think

(54m 44s)

are good but I think have the same problem so first up we what was the one you had you had the

(54m 45s) Kelly:

Yes, I will say I’m going to complain about one thing.

(54m 52s) Al:

this statue this the animal statue was that yes yes you’ve got the you’ve got the auto petter

(54m 55s) Kelly:

Oh, the barn statue, it pets your animals for you.

(54m 58s)

Yeah, I like that.

(55m) Al:

I like it my big complaint about it it only works in the largest of the barns

(55m) Kelly:

Yeah.

(55m 5s)

Yes, which threw me off really badly because I had a medium barn when I first got it.

(55m 9s) Al:

Mm-hmm. Yep, same.

(55m 10s) Kelly:

And I was like, oh, sick, I’m going to go put this in there.

(55m 12s) Al:

You can’t put it anywhere.

(55m 12s) Kelly:

And then it couldn’t put it anywhere.

(55m 15s)

And luckily, I had just sold a bunch of animals that I had bred.

(55m 18s)

So I had a ton of money for myself.

(55m 19s) Al:

Yeah.

(55m 20s) Kelly:

I think I had like $20,000 in the game and I was like, oh, I’m rich.

(55m 22s) Al:

Yeah.

(55m 25s) Kelly:

Like, oh, I can go buy a big barn at least and put it in here.

(55m 28s)

But I was like, oh, God, you can’t put this in my little things.

(55m 31s)

Like, I’m going to have to buy all the bigger ones.

(55m 34s)

So that is frustrating.

(55m 36s) Al:

Yeah, yeah.

(55m 36s) Kelly:

Yes.

(55m 38s)

I wish that they had automated the bring animals in and out function.

(55m 46s) Al:

so right okay are you aware of the big bell so there is a big bell you can you can unlock the

(55m 49s) Kelly:

No.

(55m 53s)

Where?

(55m 55s) Al:

I cannot remember where I got it uh big it’s a craftable but it it it

(55m 55s) Kelly:

Oh, it’s a craftable.

(55m 58s)

Okay.

(55m 59s)

Because I actually looked this one up and it was like, there’s no way to do it without a mod.

(56m 2s) Al:

no there is now there is now yes you got the big bell the big bell it basically it’s the same as

(56m 3s) Kelly:

So I guess they didn’t unlock that.

(56m 10s) Al:

all the little bells but it just does for all of them at once so I will they could they

(56m 12s) Kelly:

can they go out like that also okay because first of all I’m not running around to I have

(56m 16s) Al:

can go out or come in with the big bell yeah yeah so you can even you can you can put it you can you

(56m 21s) Kelly:

four barns right now I don’t want to be running around to do that and then I’ll forget and then

(56m 26s)

they’re outside ah perfect yeah

(56m 27s) Al:

can put it right next to your house so you can get into the habit you can put it right next to your

(56m 31s)

house you have a habit of I leave my house I call them out and then the last thing I do before I go

(56m 36s)

to sleep is I call them back in and then and then you’re done yeah

(56m 39s) Kelly:

that’s what I want that’s all I want that’s oh Al thank you thank you so much okay i’m gonna look

(56m 44s)

for that that’s a game changer because that like i’m like what i’m I don’t put them outside because

(56m 49s)

I forget about them and then I come back and i’m the person they’re grumpy i’m the person who i’m

(56m 52s) Al:

Yeah, absolutely.

(56m 52s)

And then they’re grumpy.

(56m 57s) Kelly:

sorry i’m spending as much time as possible away from my house so it’s like you know one o’clock

(57m) Al:

Mm-hmm. So here’s my one annoyance with this, is that I sometimes just don’t make it home in time

(57m 2s) Kelly:

in the morning and i’m running to ship stuff last minute and then all of a sudden I see my grumpy

(57m 7s)

little freaking cows sitting

(57m 9s)

in the field and I’m like, oh my God.

(57m 16s) Al:

and then there’s nothing you can do still. So you still have to get home. And it’s like you’re

(57m 18s) Kelly:

Yeah, that’s also, yeah, no, absolutely.

(57m 21s) Al:

rushing home. I’m like almost at the house and it’s 1.50 and it’s like now I have to take time

(57m 26s)

to ring the bell

(57m 27s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah.

(57m 27s) Al:

before I go to bed

(57m 28s)

is very frustrating

(57m 30s)

it is better

(57m 31s)

it’s definitely better

(57m 31s) Kelly:

Yeah, I can see that still saving me from just flat out not doing it or passing out beforehand a lot, yeah.

(57m 38s) Al:

Yeah, because that’s the thing

(57m 39s)

I just wasn’t putting my animals out before

(57m 42s) Kelly:

No, I don’t, every single time that I tell myself I’m going to do it and I’m not going to forget, I forget.

(57m 48s)

So I just stop putting them outside.

(57m 50s) Al:

I don’t because they’re not real the the other thing that they added automation with animals

(57m 51s) Kelly:

And I feel bad for them.

(58m) Al:

was the auto feeder so that allows you to you you put it in the barn and it sits next to the

(58m 4s) Kelly:

Hmm.

(58m 7s) Al:

chest in the barn

(58m 9s) Kelly:

So I haven’t gotten that yet, but does that allow you to put non-hay items in it?

(58m 9s) Al:

it’s any

(58m 15s) Kelly:

Okay.

(58m 16s)

Because you can’t put non-hay items in the trows, whatever they’re called.

(58m 22s) Al:

yeah so I don’t know how it works but I have I did see online that you can put any

(58m 27s)

edible food in it now i

(58m 28s) Kelly:

Okay. I just don’t have enough hay for this, you know, and I can’t put berries in the freaking things.

(58m 29s) Al:

um yeah I mean i’m at that point where i’m just buying all the hay

(58m 39s)

I i just go and buy I buy 500 of each and I throw it in I throw it in there and then you know I can’t

(58m 39s) Kelly:

Yeah, I figured. I knew you were going to say that.

(58m 43s)

Yeah, I figured.

(58m 47s) Al:

even figure I can’t even remember how many how many have I got just now uh I think 12 of

(58m 52s)

each so that’s slightly over that’s that’s nearly two nearly two seasons so I just I just don’t

(58m 53s) Kelly:

Okay, so you’re, yeah, you’re, uh, yeah, that’s fair, yeah, but yeah, no, I, um, I think I have, like, 20 animals, and, like, I forgot, that is one thing I forgot coming back into the game, is that you can feed them other things at first, and I had to, like, look up, I was like, how are people getting hay, besides buying it, obviously, and then I was reminded that you can feed them anything.

(58m 57s) Al:

think about it I noticed that there’s no in fact it’s more than two seasons because of course now

(59m 1s)

i’m sending them outside um

(59m 16s)

yeah yeah I just buy it that yeah yeah so I don’t know how it prioritizes what it’s putting out and

(59m 24s)

and stuff but it yeah it does it theoretically I don’t know how it works I haven’t tried it

(59m 30s)

with other food but the internet had when I when I googled it earlier the internet said you can put

(59m 35s)

any edible food in it and when I went to put my hay in it it did have all of my food as

(59m 39s)

selectable to go into it so I don’t know how it works but it is it does let you put them in

(59m 42s) Kelly:

Okay, cool.

(59m 45s)

That is good to know also.

(59m 46s) Al:

so I think overall the animal stuff is definitely better the automation for the animal stuff is

(59m 50s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(59m 51s) Al:

definitely better but I think this is going to be my complaint about a lot of this is I it’s not a

(59m 57s)

complaint from my current playthrough because I came in at this point but if I was starting afresh

(1h 2s)

I would be very frustrated with how long it takes to get to all of these things

(1h 6s) Kelly:

Yes, I think I think I didn’t start in this playthrough.

(1h 10s)

I didn’t start ranching until much later in the game because I was just like, I don’t have the time or the money for this right now.

(1h 16s) Al:

Yeah.

(1h 16s) Kelly:

You know, like I’m like, I’m running through the mines.

(1h 19s)

I’m fishing.

(1h 20s)

I’m farming.

(1h 20s) Al:

Which is funny because in Stardew, it’s the early game moneymaker.

(1h 25s) Kelly:

Yes, which is really funny.

(1h 28s)

Yeah, I agree.

(1h 28s) Al:

Like, as soon as you can afford chickens, you buy the chickens.

(1h 30s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah.

(1h 31s) Al:

In fact, I think the meta for Stardew is you go with the map that gives you free

(1h 37s)

chickens at the beginning.

(1h 38s) Kelly:

Yeah. Yeah, no, that is interesting. And I also, like, I do like the breeding. I think that’s fun

(1h 44s)

to get, like, different colors. So I am enjoying that because I’m slowly working my way again

(1h 50s)

through the tiers. I think I have, like, a purple and a, no, not purple, blue and a pink cow right

(1h 56s)

now. I like them. Oh, see, I use it to sell them. So I just, like, rotate them. I keep,

(1h 56s) Al:

nice I haven’t done a lot of the breeding uh mainly because i’m like I don’t want more animals

(1h 1m 1s)

to have to look after yet okay fair enough

(1h 1m 8s) Kelly:

like, one as my, like, oldest so that I’ll get, like, a gold stuff from them soon. And

(1h 1m 15s) Al:

Yes. Interesting.

(1h 1m 16s) Kelly:

then I just rotate out all the other ones and sell them when they get to be too much.

(1h 1m 22s) Al:

Fair enough. Yeah, maybe. I mean, I’ve just never been huge into the animals because I

(1h 1m 25s)

always feel like even with the automation stuff, they still feel like a lot of

(1h 1m 30s) Kelly:

It is. I was extremely excited to find out about that petting statue. So I am also extremely excited to find out about this auto feeder. Because again, it is just, and also the bell, because I felt like the lack of automation going on throughout that whole ranching process was really holding me back.

(1h 1m 48s) Al:

so to finish up the animal stuff that’s changed the other big complaint we had was the mill

(1h 1m 55s)

for doing the mill it took so much time to make everything right like you would have to go and

(1h 1m 55s) Kelly:

  • Mm, yes.

(1h 2m 3s) Al:

say say you have like 10 chick 10 eggs 10 chickens 10 eggs and that would take you 10 minutes per

(1h 2m 8s)

egg to make mayonnaise and so that is what is that like over an hour and a half of in-game time

(1h 2m 14s)

to make 10 mayonnaise.

(1h 2m 16s)

It’s absolute madness.

(1h 2m 18s)

A mini mill that you can put on your farm

(1h 2m 21s)

and it costs zero time for everything.

(1h 2m 21s) Kelly:

mm-hmm yeah and I do think also i’m not sure if we had made it to this at that point

(1h 2m 26s)

but the um skills you can unlock at the statue

(1h 2m 30s) Al:

We didn’t we did it’s not that we didn’t make it to that is that they didn’t exist yet because those those levels you couldn’t get up to the levels of all.

(1h 2m 30s) Kelly:

that’s okay that’s what I meant by like we didn’t make it to it like I wasn’t sure if

(1h 2m 39s)

they were unlocked or not so they probably didn’t exist it’s actually yeah like you thought the

(1h 2m 43s) Al:

yeah they just they just I think you could only get the level 30 stuff you couldn’t get the 45 or

(1h 2m 43s) Kelly:

better yeah but like I was like dedicating a whole day

(1h 2m 47s) Al:

the 60. yeah

(1h 2m 51s) Kelly:

to making food products and then I would just be like well i’m not going to do this again

(1h 2m 52s) Al:

yeah I yeah I just wasn’t doing it I just didn’t care I was actually I because because the animals

(1h 2m 55s) Kelly:

i’ll survive without them yeah yeah

(1h 3m 1s)

yeah

(1h 3m 3s) Al:

were so difficult to take care of and then you couldn’t do anything with them without wasting

(1h 3m 4s) Kelly:

yeah

(1h 3m 7s) Al:

your entire day I just was I was just not doing anything with my animals at all I was just letting

(1h 3m 8s) Kelly:

yeah no it’s I have a lot of animal products because of that

(1h 3m 11s) Al:

the waste away.

(1h 3m 13s)

Yeah, for sure.

(1h 3m 17s) Kelly:

so I think

(1h 3m 19s)

the combination of those

(1h 3m 21s)

two things is a big

(1h 3m 23s)

help but also again like it does take

(1h 3m 25s)

time to get to them so at first early on in the

(1h 3m 27s)

game like you’re definitely struggling

(1h 3m 28s)

to make that

(1h 3m 30s)

to find the time to fit them in

(1h 3m 30s) Al:

Yeah, I think that’s the thing is this, if I can generalize about this game now, they have done massive improvements in mid to late game. And it doesn’t feel like they’ve made any improvements in early game. Is that fair?

(1h 3m 33s) Kelly:

yes

(1h 3m 42s)

I agree like I don’t think

(1h 3m 49s)

so for me I’m

(1h 3m 51s)

very much enjoying my

(1h 3m 53s)

playthrough again like replaying

(1h 3m 55s)

it and I do think it helps

(1h 3m 57s)

give me perspective on how long it takes

(1h 3m 59s)

to get to these new upgrades

(1h 4m 1s)

um

(1h 4m 2s) Al:

  • Yeah, but that’s like an academic thing, right?

(1h 4m 4s)

Like, is that the same thing as actually enjoying it

(1h 4m 6s)

and wanting to go back and doing it

(1h 4m 8s) Kelly:

No, no, no. So what I’m saying is, like, I’m enjoying it in general, but I’m saying, like, it is interesting to also get to see, like, from this new playthrough, where do I hit, like, the actual automation and, like, the helpful parts of it.

(1h 4m 18s) Al:

Right, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

(1h 4m 20s) Kelly:

So, like, regardless of where I hit those, I’m still enjoying my time. However, I do wish some of them were earlier on in the game.

(1h 4m 28s) Al:

Well, because that’s the thing, right, because by the time we hit all of the wall, we wouldn’t have unlocked any of this automation.

(1h 4m 33s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(1h 4m 36s)

No.

(1h 4m 37s) Al:

All of this automation was after the walls we hit.

(1h 4m 38s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 4m 39s) Al:

So if we hadn’t got any further in the game when we recorded the last episode than we had, we would still have all the same complaints.

(1h 4m 46s)

And I don’t feel like that was early in the game.

(1h 4m 47s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 4m 49s)

No, it was a good amount

(1h 4m 51s)

because we were at least

(1h 4m 52s)

at level 50 in the mines, so that’s at least

(1h 4m 55s)

halfway through the mines.

(1h 4m 57s)

And that’s like, I would say,

(1h 4m 59s)

halfway through the

(1h 5m)

town tier also, which is

(1h 5m 2s)

a good…

(1h 5m 3s) Al:

yeah we were in this we were in the 60s I think in the town levels

(1h 5m 4s) Kelly:

Yeah, so that was

(1h 5m 7s)

a good judge for

(1h 5m 7s) Al:

all right a couple more farming things uh so they added a seed maker which pretty much works

(1h 5m 9s) Kelly:

where you are in the game

(1h 5m 11s)

too, I think.

(1h 5m 12s)

Yeah.

(1h 5m 17s)

Yes.

(1h 5m 17s) Al:

like the stardew one I like it is good yeah good good good add well it’s nice for everything like

(1h 5m 19s) Kelly:

It’s nice for, like, forageable

(1h 5m 22s)

things.

(1h 5m 24s)

Yeah.

(1h 5m 24s) Al:

I like I don’t have to buy any seeds anymore um because especially with um I i still I i still

(1h 5m 30s)

think this is one of the better

(1h 5m 31s)

reasons

(1h 5m 33s)

rewarding farming

(1h 5m 34s)

things where when you water

(1h 5m 36s)

you get seeds sometimes

(1h 5m 38s) Kelly:

yes I love that I love that so much

(1h 5m 39s) Al:

and when you

(1h 5m 41s) Kelly:

yeah

(1h 5m 41s) Al:

harvest you sometimes get food

(1h 5m 42s)

like I just think they’ve really got

(1h 5m 43s) Kelly:

yeah it’s it’s it’s honestly so great it’s it’s great I love that I love that you get

(1h 5m 45s) Al:

the rewards for farming

(1h 5m 47s)

down

(1h 5m 47s)

it’s everything else

(1h 5m 53s) Kelly:

rest like you get seeds you get cooked food like new cooked food I love those little benefits

(1h 5m 59s) Al:

I i think it’s excellent like i’m now so i’m in summer just now and i’m mostly just growing tea

(1h 6m 5s)

and so my kind of loop is I will water everything uh get a bunch of tea seeds throw them in my bag

(1h 6m 13s)

um and then by the time I get to the end of the season I will check how many I have and if I don’t

(1h 6m 18s)

have enough seeds for the next year’s season for tea I will throw a bunch in the seed maker to make

(1h 6m 25s)

up to that amount.

(1h 6m 26s)

So the next year,

(1h 6m 26s)

I don’t have to buy any seeds.

(1h 6m 29s) Kelly:

Oh, that’s so nice. Yeah.

(1h 6m 29s) Al:

And then I’ll take all those tea seeds

(1h 6m 32s)

and I’ll go make them all into tea

(1h 6m 34s)

in the cooking

(1h 6m 34s) Kelly:

Yeah, that’s nice.

(1h 6m 35s) Al:

and then I’ll throw them in.

(1h 6m 37s)

But I also think that

(1h 6m 38s)

because I think their loops

(1h 6m 40s)

are really good, right?

(1h 6m 41s)

So like I go,

(1h 6m 42s)

I water,

(1h 6m 43s)

which gives me seeds

(1h 6m 44s)

so that I can plant more.

(1h 6m 46s)

And then I harvest,

(1h 6m 49s)

which gives me some food

(1h 6m 50s)

and it also gives me the stuff.

(1h 6m 51s)

I use the stuff to make more food

(1h 6m 53s)

and I can either use the food to eat

(1h 6m 55s)

and then continue doing stuff

(1h 6m 56s)

or I can sell it.

(1h 6m 57s)

And if you sell it,

(1h 6m 58s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm. Yep.

(1h 6m 59s) Al:

a lot, a lot of town renown.

(1h 7m 2s)

I’ve never said that out loud.

(1h 7m 4s)

It’s a ridiculous statement.

(1h 7m 6s)

You get a lot of renown

(1h 7m 8s)

for those things.

(1h 7m 9s)

Like I was with my,

(1h 7m 11s)

you know, 216 crops just now.

(1h 7m 14s)

I’m gaining every,

(1h 7m 16s)

I think it’s like every four days

(1h 7m 18s)

the tea is,

(1h 7m 19s)

I’m gaining nearly two full levels

(1h 7m 22s)

every time I harvest.

(1h 7m 23s) Kelly:

Oh, wow. Oh, oh, wow. Okay.

(1h 7m 25s) Al:

It’s so good.

(1h 7m 27s)

That’s how I’m up so high.

(1h 7m 29s)

I think by the end of summer,

(1h 7m 31s)

I’ll be at level 90.

(1h 7m 33s) Kelly:

oh interesting okay because yeah because I know you get more renown from that but I i am obviously

(1h 7m 39s)

not at your level of tea harvesting um I know i’m too busy running around like an idiot

(1h 7m 41s) Al:

gotta get good

(1h 7m 44s)

but I think I think this is the thing is that like that loop is really good right because then

(1h 7m 53s)

the the town renown gets you more levels and gets you other stuff my my my issue is that the it’s

(1h 7m 59s)

it’s still the the watering is the difficult part because it’s like it it stops you expanding more

(1h 8m 3s) Kelly:

Yes.

(1h 8m 5s) Al:

like yeah I i get I get more seeds but I can’t plant

(1h 8m 5s) Kelly:

It just, it’s so energy consuming.

(1h 8m 11s) Al:

them just now because I don’t have the energy to water them later and because as we mentioned

(1h 8m 11s) Kelly:

No.

(1h 8m 14s)

Yep.

(1h 8m 15s) Al:

I can’t really get any more watering statues just now it’s just a really frustrating thing it’s it’s

(1h 8m 18s) Kelly:

Yep.

(1h 8m 21s) Al:

so close to being if they just removed if they just reduced the amount of stamina used as you go up this

(1h 8m 26s)

tools because i’m on i’m on a the mistral watering can right like i’m at the max watering can you can

(1h 8m 32s)

get as far as i’m aware and unless there’s something i’m missing and and it still uses my entire energy

(1h 8m 39s)

doing just six plots online.

(1h 8m 41s) Kelly:

  • Yeah, it’s, it’s too much.

(1h 8m 41s) Al:

Of six by six.

(1h 8m 42s)

It’s wild.

(1h 8m 44s)

Well, the other thing they’ve added in the farming is greenhouses.

(1h 8m 47s) Kelly:

Oh, okay, I haven’t gotten up to those yet,

(1h 8m 50s)

but I’m excited for that.

(1h 8m 51s) Al:

So the greenhouses are very expensive.

(1h 8m 55s)

You get one for free through the thing where you unlock it.

(1h 8m 59s)

But my goodness, a small greenhouse is, I think, let me check.

(1h 9m 6s)

Give me, I want to get.

(1h 9m 7s) Kelly:

On that note, I do really like the terrariums and the beehives.

(1h 9m 11s) Al:

They’re fun.

(1h 9m 12s)

Yeah, why don’t you talk about them?

(1h 9m 12s) Kelly:

Yeah, because I think I don’t think we had them in the early access, but I I like them as they produce honey.

(1h 9m 20s)

So that’s you have that for crafting and for selling and for recipes.

(1h 9m 24s)

And then you also get varying levels of bug bait and bug pheromone and fish bait, which is so nice for your trap, your fish traps.

(1h 9m 37s)

Trying to collect a specific fish or a specific bug at a certain time, they’re very helpful.

(1h 9m 43s)

And also there’s different museum collections for them, which is interesting.

(1h 9m 47s) Al:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(1h 9m 49s) Kelly:

So I think there’s just like a fun little added mechanic of like collecting.

(1h 9m 52s) Al:

I agree, I agree.

(1h 9m 54s) Kelly:

And can be helpful, like they’re not a guarantee, which is, you know, annoying, but there’s no guarantees.

(1h 10m) Al:

no no I i’ve not put a lot into those because it’s the effort feels like a lot for where i

(1h 10m 6s)

currently am and i’m not kind of like trying to finish the museum just now

(1h 10m 7s) Kelly:

Yeah, I think I think they’re better for earlier on and for helping with collecting.

(1h 10m 9s) Al:

earlier and later

(1h 10m 15s)

yeah yeah yeah exactly exactly um so yeah I double checked the prices so for a small

(1h 10m 15s) Kelly:

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

(1h 10m 17s)

Because there’s definitely some moments where I’m like, well, I don’t have that item right now, so I just take the bugs out and I.

(1h 10m 30s) Al:

greenhouse which is a five by five greenhouse it’s 50 000 and for a large greenhouse which is a 10 by 10

(1h 10m 41s)

which is a decent size that is a hundred thousand for one it is so expensive so like I and like i’m

(1h 10m 45s) Kelly:

  • Oh my god, oh my god.

(1h 10m 52s) Al:

at the point where I i currently my the money I have is 250 000 so I could buy two greenhouses

(1h 10m 58s)

if I wanted, but that would be

(1h 11m) Kelly:

But then you’d be so poor, yeah.

(1h 11m) Al:

almost my entire money, exactly

(1h 11m 2s)

so obviously the good

(1h 11m 4s)

like I think the thing is they tried

(1h 11m 6s)

to balance the greenhouses because

(1h 11m 8s) Kelly:

  • Mm-hmm.

(1h 11m 8s) Al:

what I do like is the fact that you can have multiple

(1h 11m 10s)

greenhouses, that is a really good addition

(1h 11m 12s)

I like the fact that you can do that because

(1h 11m 14s)

greenhouses have always felt a little bit restricted

(1h 11m 16s)

in these games, like you know, Stardew

(1h 11m 18s)

is the standard of like, you get your greenhouse

(1h 11m 20s) Kelly:

Yeah, you can only have the one.

(1h 11m 20s) Al:

and you’re like, okay great

(1h 11m 22s)

and it’s never a perfect layout and blah blah blah blah blah

(1h 11m 24s) Kelly:

Mm-hmm.

(1h 11m 24s) Al:

whatever

(1h 11m 24s)

but the fact that you can have multiple

(1h 11m 27s) Kelly:

Oh my god, the layout in there.

(1h 11m 28s) Al:

is great, but then they balance that

(1h 11m 30s)

with making them incredibly expensive.

(1h 11m 33s) Kelly:

Yeah, which I guess makes sense, you know,

(1h 11m 36s)

because otherwise it’s like you could just grow things all year round, I guess.

(1h 11m 39s) Al:

how dare we how dare we be more efficient

(1h 11m 41s) Kelly:

Oh no.

(1h 11m 43s) Al:

I double checked the large watering statue is seven by seven so I just want to complain about

(1h 11m 46s) Kelly:

How will you afford to water them all, Al?

(1h 11m 55s) Al:

this why would you give us two statues one which is 5x5 one which is 7x7 but

(1h 12m 1s)

then you give us two greenhouses one of which is 5x5 and one of which is 10x10

(1h 12m 5s) Kelly:

because they they hate us

(1h 12m 5s) Al:

They don’t match.

(1h 12m 7s)

The greenhouses don’t match.

(1h 12m 7s) Kelly:

no I don’t think so I don’t think they do

(1h 12m 9s) Al:

The watering statues.

(1h 12m 11s)

What am I going to do?

(1h 12m 12s)

Seven by seven.

(1h 12m 13s)

And then I’ve got three by three.

(1h 12m 14s)

So I’m wasting space.

(1h 12m 15s)

It’s the Stardew greenhouse all over again.

(1h 12m 18s)

What are you doing?

(1h 12m 19s)

Does nobody who play these games care about nice layouts?

(1h 12m 27s)

Also, also, just a point.

(1h 12m 28s)

Just a point.

(1h 12m 29s)

Seven by seven.

(1h 12m 30s)

I understand why it’s seven by seven, right?

(1h 12m 33s)

Because it’s quite a lot bigger than five by five,

(1h 12m 35s)

but it’s still an odd number.

(1h 12m 37s)

So that works nicely for putting the green

(1h 12m 39s)

house in the middle. Sorry, the

(1h 12m 40s)

statue in the middle. Yeah, sure.

(1h 12m 42s) Kelly:

Statue, yeah, yeah, yeah.

(1h 12m 43s) Al:

Great. Fine. Here’s a

(1h 12m 45s)

problem. See, if I run out of

(1h 12m 46s)

essence and so I have to manually water,

(1h 12m 49s) Kelly:

Oh, it sucks to water.

(1h 12m 49s) Al:

I can only water in six

(1h 12m 51s)

by six.

(1h 12m 51s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 12m 52s) Al:

So what am I doing? I’m going to put out

(1h 12m 54s)

six

(1h 12m 57s)

of these out so I can

(1h 12m 58s)

then do six.

(1h 13m)

Stupid!

(1h 13m 1s) Kelly:

Yeah, I agree.

(1h 13m 4s)

I agree.

(1h 13m 6s) Al:

42 by

(1h 13m 6s)

42 so that I can water it by six

(1h 13m 9s)

or by sevens. There you go. That’s what we want.

(1h 13m 10s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 13m 11s) Al:

Right? Great. Just, I don’t

(1h 13m 12s) Kelly:

I, I, I…

(1h 13m 12s) Al:

every, this is something I hate

(1h 13m 14s)

about every farming game and they never do

(1h 13m 16s)

it well. There’s always something that doesn’t

(1h 13m 19s)

work with the numbers. Why

(1h 13m 21s)

would you do this?

(1h 13m 21s) Kelly:

Yeah, I never understood that. And like, aren’t, aren’t, aren’t game programmers and developers, like, shouldn’t they be good at math? Shouldn’t they understand this?

(1h 13m 22s) Al:

Also, oh,

(1h 13m 30s)

Also, a gold watering can gives you 6x6.

(1h 13m 35s)

Mistral watering can, can you guess what it would give you that’s bigger than 6x6?

(1h 13m 41s) Kelly:

Six by seven?

(1h 13m 42s) Al:

No, it’s not that bad.

(1h 13m 44s)

But like a 6x6, you might think, oh, maybe it’ll go up to like, you know, 10x10 or something like that.

(1h 13m 48s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 13m 49s) Al:

It goes up to 6x9.

(1h 13m 51s) Kelly:

Oh.

(1h 13m 51s) Al:

6x9?

(1h 13m 52s) Kelly:

Why?

(1h 13m 53s) Al:

What do you mean 6x9?

(1h 13m 57s)

I have six pots of 6x6 just now.

(1h 14m)

It literally gives me no advantage.

(1h 14m 1s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 14m 2s) Al:

It takes the same number of waterings on 6x6 and 6x9.

(1h 14m 6s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 14m 8s) Al:

What are you doing?

(1h 14m 8s) Kelly:

Well, it doesn’t use your extra

(1h 14m 11s)

energy, it just wastes your time.

(1h 14m 12s) Al:

Well, that is a good point.

(1h 14m 14s)

That is a good point.

(1h 14m 14s)

It doesn’t use extra energy, but it…

(1h 14m 16s) Kelly:

Because I did

(1h 14m 17s)

note that with the rocks and everything, too.

(1h 14m 17s) Al:

Yeah.

(1h 14m 19s) Kelly:

I was like, am I wasting energy

(1h 14m 20s)

using the bigger one? Which is

(1h 14m 20s) Al:

Yeah.

(1h 14m 22s)

Oh, all right.

(1h 14m 23s) Kelly:

nice, but it does waste your time.

(1h 14m 24s) Al:

I think that’s all I have for the farming and the animal.

(1h 14m 27s) Kelly:

Okay, so my thing

(1h 14m 28s)

that I realized is that

(1h 14m 30s)

if you do the math on foods

(1h 14m 33s)

you’re cooking, you’re almost never making

(1h 14m 35s)

a profit in terms of ingredients

(1h 14m 37s)

to recipe.

(1h 14m 39s) Al:

yeah I think often the profit is very small yeah i’m not doing it for the

(1h 14m 41s) Kelly:

If there is.

(1h 14m 42s)

Some of them you actually lose money.

(1h 14m 44s)

But the thing is, you’re not doing it for the profit.

(1h 14m 45s) Al:

i’m not doing it for the profit i’m doing it for that cooking skill and i’m doing it for that town

(1h 14m 47s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 14m 49s)

Yep.

(1h 14m 50s) Al:

renown yeah I i I legitimately when I realized that tea you could just make on its own just tea

(1h 14m 50s) Kelly:

Yep. And to sell them and

(1h 14m 52s)

to get better, like

(1h 14m 54s)

maybe I want an infusion in my meal.

(1h 15m 1s) Al:

leaves and you make a profit of 10 per tea which is not a lot but I went for I went I went up to

(1h 15m 2s) Kelly:

yeah

(1h 15m 2s)

yep I did that with like I think a lot of the other drinks like the coconut drinks and like the

(1h 15m 9s) Al:

1660 in like two days it was incredible

(1h 15m 11s)

hmm yeah

(1h 15m 17s) Kelly:

I was like oh this is such an easy way to just get uh so much extra now but yeah so the point of

(1h 15m 25s)

cooking recipes is not to actually make a profit profit it’s to especially with ingredients that

(1h 15m 32s)

oil or rock salt or soy sauce you’re not making a profit with that but you are getting other benefits

(1h 15m 39s)

and sometimes you get an extra ingredient sometimes you get an extra meal

(1h 15m 40s) Al:

yeah yeah so I think I i’m so oh goodness me I got into a loop once with with my tea leaves where i

(1h 15m 45s) Kelly:

mm-hmm

(1h 15m 48s) Al:

cooked I cooked my 216 tea leaves and I got an extra 24 tea leaves and I cooked those 24 tea

(1h 15m 54s)

leaves and I got an extra four tea leaves and so I cooked those four tea leaves and I got an extra

(1h 15m 59s)

tea leaf and then I cooked that one tea leaf I got an extra tea leaf and then I cooked that one

(1h 16m 3s)

tea leaf and guess what kelly I got another tea leaf

(1h 16m 4s) Kelly:

you got an extra one but this is so that I think that goes back to your point of like

(1h 16m 10s)

the good rewards like from farming like I think that their reward system is set up very well

(1h 16m 13s) Al:

yeah mostly mostly yeah I think what so this actually brings me nicely into into my my still

(1h 16m 17s) Kelly:

in that sense mostly of course there’s there’s always going to be an issue

(1h 16m 26s) Al:

complaint about this game is the magic so the mana the mana in this game is still so hard to get

(1h 16m 29s) Kelly:

Yes.

(1h 16m 33s) Al:

um and and they’ve not made it any easier so the ways you get mana so you have you can have

(1h 16m 41s)

So you have different magic spells.

(1h 16m 43s)

And they cost like one orb or two orbs.

(1h 16m 47s)

And then when you sleep overnight, you gain a quarter of an orb.

(1h 16m 52s)

So it takes four days to get one orb.

(1h 16m 53s) Kelly:

Can I tell you something stupid I was doing you know those water found the water bowls the

(1h 16m 57s) Al:

Please do.

(1h 17m 1s) Kelly:

stones bowls whatever they’re called my brain just broke trying to think of

(1h 17m 5s)

the word for a while in my head I thought that they restored your mana so what I would do is

(1h 17m 7s) Al:

if only

(1h 17m 14s) Kelly:

I would use up all my energy like collecting cutting down trees doing stuff on the farm

(1h 17m 21s)

I would make sure I would hit one

(1h 17m 23s)

of those when I was at the bottom of my energy

(1h 17m 24s)

use a full restore

(1h 17m 26s)

and then drink from it and not look at my

(1h 17m 28s)

like little mana balls

(1h 17m 29s) Al:

Ah, no!

(1h 17m 31s) Kelly:

to see if they were refilling

(1h 17m 32s)

so I probably did that for like a week

(1h 17m 34s) Al:

You just wasted an hour of a day.

(1h 17m 34s) Kelly:

yeah I was just wasting

(1h 17m 39s)

them but like I don’t use the thing is

(1h 17m 40s)

I wasn’t using the full restores enough to

(1h 17m 42s)

notice

(1h 17m 43s)

so like it didn’t register to me at all

(1h 17m 43s) Al:

Yeah.

(1h 17m 49s) Kelly:

and then one day I did it and I was like

(1h 17m 50s)

I am so stupid

(1h 17m 53s)

like why did I

(1h 17m 54s)

how did I not notice that this was

(1h 17m 56s)

it just doesn’t even give you a lot of energy

(1h 17m 59s)

back it just gives you like a little

(1h 18m 1s)

blip like eating a soup

(1h 18m 2s) Al:

yeah yeah I just I don’t understand what we’re meant I don’t I don’t understand what we’re meant

(1h 18m 2s) Kelly:

anyway that’s my stupid point

(1h 18m 7s)

of magic and I forget to use it all the time

(1h 18m 10s) Al:

to do with the the mana because it feels like so I’m gonna I presume you’ve not played Moonlight

(1h 18m 17s)

Peaks okay so Moonlight Peaks is uh it’s Stardew but you’re a vampire it’s not it’s fun I really

(1h 18m 18s) Kelly:

No. Which one is that one?

(1h 18m 23s)

Oh, cute.

(1h 18m 26s) Al:

enjoyed it I put like a good 40 50 hours into it and I had a really good time with it

(1h 18m 31s) Kelly:

  • Oh, I’ve seen this one, okay, yeah.

(1h 18m 32s) Al:

so it also has a magic system because you are uh you you’re actually the the spawn of Dracula and a

(1h 18m 39s)

witch so you are both uh magic and a vampire um and so you uh you can you can cast magic um they

(1h 18m 48s)

have a similar system with the magic almost identical except that you gain a full orb every

(1h 18m 55s)

night not a quarter of an orb every night and they also have magical crops that you can grow

(1h 19m 2s)

and if you grow these magical crops you can then turn them into food which will replenish mana

(1h 19m 7s)

and you can do that pretty consistently in this game there are three ways to gain mana that I am aware

(1h 19m 14s)

of one is that you gain a quarter of an orb every night which is an insanely low amount I’m just gonna

(1h 19m 20s)

say that give me an orb a night please give me an orb a night why a quarter of an orb a night

(1h 19m 25s) Kelly:

.

(1h 19m 25s) Al:

every four days you can do one simple spell is just not good enough

(1h 19m 32s)

um two is you can use the mana potions they will give you a full orb but the problem is you cannot

(1h 19m 37s)

craft these you just come upon them either in chests or there’s like there is a magical crop that

(1h 19m 44s)

you could do later on and sometimes when you harvest it it will give you that but it’s like

(1h 19m 49s)

it’s not reliable enough right you you just you I have maybe in this game come across five of these

(1h 19m 57s)

mana potions in

(1h 19m 57s)

total is not

(1h 19m 58s)

enough it’s not

(1h 19m 59s)

enough at all

(1h 20m)

the third way you

(1h 20m 2s)

do it is once

(1h 20m 3s)

you’ve unlocked a

(1h 20m 4s)

specific cooking

(1h 20m 4s)

perk um if you

(1h 20m 6s)

craft a four star

(1h 20m 8s)

meal there’s a

(1h 20m 10s)

chance that one

(1h 20m 12s)

of them that it

(1h 20m 13s)

will that it will

(1h 20m 13s)

give you the mana

(1h 20m 15s)

replenish ability as

(1h 20m 16s)

well and it will

(1h 20m 17s)

give you an orb

(1h 20m 18s)

now the problem

(1h 20m 19s)

is the four star

(1h 20m 21s)

menu items they

(1h 20m 24s)

are very hard to

(1h 20m 25s)

do they have five

(1h 20m 27s)

different ingredients

(1h 20m 27s)

each of them um

(1h 20m 32s)

at least one of the items is a specific seasonal thing

(1h 20m 35s)

so one of them is pumpkin pie

(1h 20m 40s)

and I have all of the ingredients

(1h 20m 42s)

all of the ingredients except one

(1h 20m 43s)

you can just buy at the shop

(1h 20m 46s)

so the one ingredient you can’t is of course the pumpkin

(1h 20m 49s)

and so as soon as I get into autumn next month

(1h 20m 54s)

I will be all of the pumpkins

(1h 20m 57s)

so I can make as many of that item as I possibly can

(1h 21m 2s)

because I don’t have a real chance of making any of the other items

(1h 21m 5s)

because they require so much

(1h 21m 6s)

and trying to get those items is hard

(1h 21m 8s)

it’s not just stuff you can grow

(1h 21m 10s)

it’s just a bunch of other stuff

(1h 21m 12s)

and also I did 10 ice cream sundaes

(1h 21m 17s)

which is a 5 star thing

(1h 21m 18s)

so it’s not even just 4 stars, 5 star

(1h 21m 20s)

I did 10 of them

(1h 21m 21s)

not a single one had the mana replenish ability on

(1h 21m 25s)

so I

(1h 21m 25s) Kelly:

oh my god it’s it’s rough it’s it’s that’s yeah I don’t know

(1h 21m 32s) Al:

combine that

(1h 21m 33s)

combine that

(1h 21m 34s)

with the fact that it is so easy to misuse these spells

(1h 21m 36s)

as you pointed out

(1h 21m 38s)

the dragon breath one that you just unlocked

(1h 21m 41s)

I used that once for trying to do something

(1h 21m 44s)

and I stood in the wrong spot

(1h 21m 46s)

and it didn’t work

(1h 21m 47s)

and I wasted 2 orbs to do that

(1h 21m 51s) Kelly:

oh my god okay is that is that one intentionally hard to like aim like why does it change direction

(1h 21m 51s) Al:

I do not know

(1h 21m 57s) Kelly:

from the way you’re facing

(1h 21m 57s) Al:

I don’t know

(1h 21m 59s) Kelly:

I guess but I i was like am I gonna set I i unlocked that that like uh rock door that’s

(1h 21m 59s) Al:

so I think that’s accidental

(1h 22m 2s)

to do a spell

(1h 22m 11s)

yep correct yeah

(1h 22m 11s) Kelly:

like next to errol is that his name his house he’s like am I gonna set his I i really am i

(1h 22m 14s) Al:

yeah I will say that ability was so incredibly fun to go around your farm killing everything

(1h 22m 16s) Kelly:

going to set his house on fire like why am I shooting fireballs into his house

(1h 22m 21s)

for 10 seconds

(1h 22m 26s) Al:

but just be warning it does kill everything so if you have like beehives set up it will kill them

(1h 22m 27s) Kelly:

oh

(1h 22m 32s) Al:

and like you just get them and you can put them back down again but it will

(1h 22m 35s) Kelly:

Do you get items after you use it?

(1h 22m 35s) Al:

yeah yes yeah it’s incredible for clearing rocks and

(1h 22m 38s) Kelly:

Oh, that’s like a quick clean.

(1h 22m 40s)

Oh.

(1h 22m 41s) Al:

and stuff like that it’s so good but two orbs and almost no way to replenish it you can use it

(1h 22m 46s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 22m 49s)

Yeah.

(1h 22m 49s) Al:

once every eight days

(1h 22m 51s)

so I i I i I like the magic system it’s very bare bones there’s not a huge number of spells

(1h 22m 53s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 22m 58s)

Yeah.

(1h 23m) Al:

I wish there were ways to use a spell without pinning it you can just pin one of the spells

(1h 23m 5s)

and that’s the one you have to use it’s a little bit annoying it’s not the end of the world but the

(1h 23m 11s)

mana replenishment you gotta improve it you gotta give me a way to craft the mana potions

(1h 23m 16s)

or give me something else that I can grow that gives me mana like give me a more guaranteed way

(1h 23m 22s)

to get it basically there’s no guaranteed way to get mana except a quarter of an orb a night

(1h 23m 28s) Kelly:

yeah no it’s it’s not a good system which is why I think in my head I was like oh you drink from

(1h 23m 35s)

this and you’ll get replacement because there’s no other way to replace this stuff besides waiting

(1h 23m 39s)

but that wasn’t I was lying to myself

(1h 23m 39s) Al:

yep frustrating um the other thing that we talked about

(1h 23m 46s)

that they now have is steam achievements uh I like steam achievements

(1h 23m 50s) Kelly:

yes okay because as soon as I logged into the game uh everything popped up and I was like what’s

(1h 23m 50s) Al:

so many steam achievements

(1h 23m 55s)

44 steam achievements

(1h 23m 57s) Kelly:

happening like why is why am I getting all of these and then I was like oh I remember now

(1h 23m 59s) Al:

I will say that is the way to do things please and thank you yes if you add

(1h 24m 9s)

achievements please uh award them retroactively don’t make me do them all again

(1h 24m 11s) Kelly:

Yeah. Yes. Yes. Yeah, because I was like, oh my god, what? I literally opened the game and Steam was just, like, pinging me. I was like, I didn’t even do anything. I didn’t even start a new game yet. What do you mean?

(1h 24m 14s) Al:

again

(1h 24m 21s)

yeah agreed

(1h 24m 25s) Kelly:

No, that was nice. I love it. I love it. It’s…

(1h 24m 25s) Al:

I do it’s I know it’s so silly anytime i’m playing a game on switch i’m sad because i

(1h 24m 34s) Kelly:

I know. I know. I don’t understand why they don’t do it, especially when that game has achievements on other side.

(1h 24m 34s) Al:

don’t get steam achievements I don’t get achievements give me achievements nintendo

(1h 24m 46s)

yeah especially frustrating there was some was it stardew implemented their achievements on switch

(1h 24m 51s)

it’s just it’s entirely within game which is so much more work for them to do incredible amounts

(1h 24m 52s) Kelly:

I think they did.

(1h 24m 54s)

I think they did.

(1h 24m 55s)

I don’t remember.

(1h 24m 59s) Al:

of work for them to do because they have to implement the ui and uh you know this the storing

(1h 25m 3s)

of everything whereas all of that is like technically speaking generally how these

(1h 25m 9s)

achievement things work is the in-game you call a specific function that the um for whatever

(1h 25m 16s)

platform you’re on and you say hey this person has done this team achievement um and they even have

(1h 25m 20s)

things that allow them to keep track of it so they can say hey this person has done one percent of this

(1h 25m 24s)

oh they’ve done another one percent of it and then it will keep track of that and it’ll tell you when

(1h 25m 28s)

it’s done so generally these uh achievements are are not very hard to add they are harder when you add

(1h 25m 34s)

them retrospectively as with so many things i’ve talked about in things so if you want to add steam

(1h 25m 39s)

achievements add them from the base game do not leave them till 1.0 like Fields of Mistria did

(1h 25m 44s)

Because that would have been so much…

(1h 25m 46s)

much work for them to retroactively do,

(1h 25m 47s)

but I’m so glad they did.

(1h 25m 48s) Kelly:

I’m sure they I think they did it the right way to considering that we all got our rights

(1h 25m 53s) Al:

Absolutely.

(1h 25m 54s)

Also, because apparently this is a thing,

(1h 25m 57s)

I still need to keep saying

(1h 25m 58s)

thank you Fields of Mysteria

(1h 26m)

for not wiping out my save file at 1.0,

(1h 26m 3s)

which so many games do

(1h 26m 4s) Kelly:

um can I can I say actually I love that they have every single save that i’ve ever done

(1h 26m 4s) Al:

and it annoys me so much.

(1h 26m 11s) Kelly:

stored in this game essentially

(1h 26m 13s)

because I can go back I can go back to my original playthrough and and select

(1h 26m 14s) Al:

which is what they should do,

(1h 26m 15s)

because that’s what every game does after 1.0.

(1h 26m 21s) Kelly:

a variety of places to go and play from that and I was like wow this is so I i just realized that

(1h 26m 28s)

actually a few days ago and I was like this is so nice it’s like you don’t even get like the

(1h 26m 31s) Al:

Yeah, no, I agree.

(1h 26m 34s) Kelly:

the standard like four saves it’s like no there’s there’s so many

(1h 26m 40s) Al:

Yeah. Yeah. No, they do. They do. They do. The save. I have so many complaints about how games do saves and I’ve never had a single complaint about Fields of Mistria. I’ve done it. It’s really good. And I try. I try so hard to have complaints. It’s literally my job to have complaints.

(1h 26m 47s) Kelly:

Hmm.

(1h 26m 49s)

No.

(1h 26m 57s)

Yeah, no, they do that.

(1h 26m 58s)

They do that really good.

(1h 26m 59s)

I like that set up.

(1h 27m 1s) Al:

uh let me check my list to see if there was anything else oh performance this game really

(1h 27m 8s)

really good so I have my um my ally x and some games will load up on that game on that console

(1h 27m 17s)

and i’ll have half an hour an hour of battery life because they’re just so intensive or badly

(1h 27m 24s)

you know run I i barely have to charge this thing when playing Fields of Mistria like

(1h 27m 31s)

i’m i’m legitimately shocked at how good how well performing and how good with the battery this

(1h 27m 37s)

game is they have done some incredible work on this like I just it just it’s not a thing that i

(1h 27m 43s)

have to worry about I never hear the fans go on I never I i and legitimately like I i charged this

(1h 27m 50s)

thing yesterday and it’s at 35 now and i’ve been playing for like four or five hours in that time

(1h 27m 56s)

like that’s unheard of for these

(1h 27m 58s)

for this console it’s just

(1h 28m)

bizarre

(1h 28m 1s)

it’s so good I’m really impressed

(1h 28m 3s)

I’ve never seen any slowdowns

(1h 28m 5s)

any you know frame

(1h 28m 6s) Kelly:

yeah no I have I have the same experience on I’m playing it on my laptop and like I have a laptop

(1h 28m 7s) Al:

drops any of that it’s great

(1h 28m 9s)

I think it’s really really good

(1h 28m 17s) Kelly:

it’s it’s a good laptop for gaming it’s not a great one but um you know I’ve played other

(1h 28m 23s)

I’ve played other farming games and my fans will go on and or like I can’t watch YouTube

(1h 28m 28s) Al:

Yeah.

(1h 28m 30s) Kelly:

playing other games because it’ll mess up the frame rate you know because like LA

(1h 28m 34s) Al:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, absolutely.

(1h 28m 36s) Kelly:

it’s a farming game I like to watch some some videos while I do this and I have not had any

(1h 28m 41s)

issues I’ve been watching deep sea YouTube videos with no problem no no janky frame rates nothing

(1h 28m 49s)

so I think that is uh definitely something to commend them on also

(1h 28m 54s)

okay um

(1h 28m 54s) Al:

I think that was everything on my list.

(1h 28m 57s)

So is there anything else on your list?

(1h 28m 58s) Kelly:

um like complaint wise from like the original or just in general

(1h 29m 5s) Al:

Just anything else you want to talk about.

(1h 29m 6s) Kelly:

um I think fishing is fine I think at this I will say I think out of all the farming games

(1h 29m 12s)

the fishing in this one doesn’t draw me in as much as some other ones do and I really like fishing

(1h 29m 17s)

but not in like a bad way I still spend a lot of time fishing like don’t get me wrong I just I don’t

(1h 29m 21s)

know I don’t know if it’s it’s fine it’s I think there’s yeah yeah yeah I think that is what it is

(1h 29m 22s) Al:

yeah I think it’s because there’s no there’s no real mini game so you you like that challenge don’t

(1h 29m 30s) Kelly:

I think that like I I don’t think it’s a bad fishing setup I just don’t think it has the draw

(1h 29m 36s)

that some of the other ones do I think there’s yeah because you’re not a big fishing yeah um like

(1h 29m 38s) Al:

That’s fair. Whereas I feel the opposite. I prefer that not.

(1h 29m 43s) Kelly:

I do I think I’ve filled up a good amount of my museums with fish um and I do like like you know

(1h 29m 47s) Al:

yeah

(1h 29m 48s)

yes

(1h 29m 49s) Kelly:

there’s still obviously your weather related ones or the rarer ones or the fish bait ones like there’s

(1h 29m 53s) Al:

yeah

(1h 29m 54s)

one thing I found weird is there are a large

(1h 29m 55s) Kelly:

ones that you can only catch if you use fish bait

(1h 29m 57s)

yes yeah because I find that

(1h 29m 59s) Al:

number of fish that just don’t go in the museum

(1h 30m 1s)

at all which is weird

(1h 30m 3s)

why

(1h 30m 5s)

yeah oh here’s a new

(1h 30m 6s) Kelly:

confusing because like I have spent a good amount of time like being like yeah yeah okay sure and like

(1h 30m 9s) Al:

fish that I’ve not encountered what do you mean it doesn’t go in

(1h 30m 14s) Kelly:

it is interesting because there is a lot that do go in from things like fish bait and stuff like that

(1h 30m 18s)

and it’s like well okay um but yeah like I think the fishing is fine like again I still have put a lot

(1h 30m 24s) Al:

Yeah, yeah, I don’t really think, yeah, I, I don’t think anything’s really changed other than the bait from the, the, the thing that you talked about before, but it’s, yeah, it’s nice, it’s a good addition, but it’s not like, it doesn’t fundamentally change.

(1h 30m 26s) Kelly:

of time into fishing so it’s not as if I hate the fishing I just don’t think it has any

(1h 30m 31s)

yeah which is

(1h 30m 36s)

nice which is yeah um but that’s that’s all I really have for fishing for mining I did like that um

(1h 30m 47s)

there’s a chest when you unlock that forge I like that they because I had tried putting a chest in the

(1h 30m 55s)

mine room multiple times in in early access and it would just remove the chest or like wouldn’t let you

(1h 30m 56s) Al:

yeah

(1h 30m 56s)

yes yeah i’ve started using that for for for my dishes

(1h 31m 2s) Kelly:

put a

(1h 31m 3s)

chest in

(1h 31m 3s)

there

(1h 31m 3s)

yeah

(1h 31m 3s) Al:

because the mine is what is always where I need the extra food

(1h 31m 4s) Kelly:

exactly

(1h 31m 6s)

so it’s like

(1h 31m 9s)

I’d much

(1h 31m 9s)

rather have

(1h 31m 10s)

that there

(1h 31m 10s)

and like

(1h 31m 11s)

have a place

(1h 31m 12s)

or like

(1h 31m 13s)

say I pick

(1h 31m 13s)

up a few

(1h 31m 14s)

things on

(1h 31m 14s)

my way to

(1h 31m 15s)

the mine

(1h 31m 15s)

and I

(1h 31m 15s)

don’t want

(1h 31m 16s)

that in

(1h 31m 16s)

my pockets

(1h 31m 17s)

or I

(1h 31m 19s)

want to

(1h 31m 19s)

forge

(1h 31m 19s)

something at

(1h 31m 20s)

the forge

(1h 31m 20s)

before I

(1h 31m 21s)

go into

(1h 31m 21s)

the mine

(1h 31m 21s)

or like

(1h 31m 22s)

I just

(1h 31m 22s)

want to

(1h 31m 22s)

leave it

(1h 31m 22s)

there

(1h 31m 23s)

you know

(1h 31m 23s)

like I

(1h 31m 23s)

think that’s

(1h 31m 24s)

it’s nice

(1h 31m 25s)

to actually

(1h 31m 26s)

have that

(1h 31m 26s)

chest in

(1h 31m 27s)

there now

(1h 31m 27s)

because that

(1h 31m 28s)

is one

(1h 31m 28s)

thing I

(1h 31m 28s)

felt the

(1h 31m 29s)

mines were

(1h 31m 29s)

missing

(1h 31m 29s)

I

(1h 31m 32s) Al:

All right. Tell me how you’re feeling about this game overall now, two years later.

(1h 31m 36s) Kelly:

I still

(1h 31m 36s)

like it

(1h 31m 36s)

a lot

(1h 31m 36s)

I think

(1h 31m 37s)

I think

(1h 31m 37s)

it has

(1h 31m 38s)

replayability

(1h 31m 40s)

clearly

(1h 31m 41s)

because I’ve

(1h 31m 41s)

done

(1h 31m 42s)

I’ve done

(1h 31m 42s)

two playthroughs

(1h 31m 43s)

now

(1h 31m 43s)

obviously I haven’t

(1h 31m 44s)

finished the

(1h 31m 45s)

second one

(1h 31m 45s)

I think it

(1h 31m 47s)

is a

(1h 31m 48s)

like nicely

(1h 31m 49s)

formed

(1h 31m 49s)

fishing

(1h 31m 50s)

farming

(1h 31m 51s)

game

(1h 31m 51s)

like I

(1h 31m 52s)

think it

(1h 31m 52s)

holds its

(1h 31m 53s)

own

(1h 31m 53s)

without

(1h 31m 54s)

suffering

(1h 31m 55s)

too much

(1h 31m 55s)

of like

(1h 31m 55s)

you know

(1h 31m 55s)

being a

(1h 31m 56s)

stardew

(1h 31m 56s)

replica

(1h 31m 57s)

yeah

(1h 31m 58s) Al:

Yeah, that’s always a difficult thing, right? Like when you have such a clearly it is a stardew lake, like there’s no way around it. That’s how we described it two years ago. That’s always what you’re going to be compared to. But I think it does. I think it does a decent job. I still struggle to care about any of the characters, which I think is as big as flaw.

(1h 32m 1s) Kelly:

yeah unfortunately

(1h 32m 6s)

that’s yeah

(1h 32m 7s)

yeah

(1h 32m 15s)

Yes. But, see, I don’t hold that against it, because honestly, I think I struggle to connect with characters in most games. So, like, I’m not playing farming games for the romance or the character progression.

(1h 32m 27s) Al:

no but they make it they make it a thing right they if you don’t if you don’t want us to care

(1h 32m 30s) Kelly:

Yes. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but I think… I understand that. I just think that in a lot of games where they expect romance, I don’t care in general. So, like…

(1h 32m 33s) Al:

about romance you wouldn’t put it in the game they want us to care about it so I do hold it against

(1h 32m 45s) Kelly:

For me, that’s not, like, a draw or a failure. That’s just my personal lack of interest in general. But, like, I do get your point. Like, I think if people are looking for that, like…

(1h 32m 57s)

I have a hard time judging it, because I can’t tell if it’s boring to me or boring in general, I guess, you know?

(1h 33m 5s) Al:

is it that the characters are bad or is it just that you don’t care about romance in general

(1h 33m 10s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah.

(1h 33m 11s) Al:

I would love I i’d love someone to like design like an aromantic dating game like what could

(1h 33m 15s) Kelly:

Is it a personal problem or a game problem? Find out more.

(1h 33m 22s)

That would be interesting.

(1h 33m 24s)

Yeah.

(1h 33m 24s) Al:

that because like aromantics still care about people right it’s not like you never want to

(1h 33m 30s)

have anything to do with people and so what would that what would that look like what would it look

(1h 33m 35s)

to be in a game yeah but but make it but I think that’s the thing is like most of these games they

(1h 33m 37s) Kelly:

like developing different levels of friendship yeah and like companion you can still have companionship

(1h 33m 46s) Al:

have different levels of friendship and then they go romantic but what would it what would

(1h 33m 50s) Kelly:

yeah and I think that what annoys me honestly is that like if I keep talking to all these people

(1h 33m 55s)

eventually they’re going to be like close to like they’re going to be on the romantic

(1h 34m)

end of the spectrum and it’s like is that necessary to me I don’t think so

(1h 34m 1s) Al:

exactly

(1h 34m 2s)

uh-huh yeah so what would it look to do that without everything having to be romantic

(1h 34m 5s) Kelly:

yeah like I think if you made it so that if you wanted it to be romantic

(1h 34m 14s)

you could do something to gesture that you know what I mean and that would

(1h 34m 17s) Al:

yes so um uh moonlight peaks actually has a good way of doing this you get to a certain point

(1h 34m 20s) Kelly:

you

(1h 34m 24s) Al:

in a relationship and you can uh one of the options you have is ask them out on a date

(1h 34m 30s)

and that feels like a really good way of being like oh this would be the point where it’s like

(1h 34m 32s) Kelly:

Uh, okay.

(1h 34m 35s) Al:

you can make it specific you like ask them out on a romantic date or you could ask them out on a

(1h 34m 39s)

friend something right like you can you could that that’s not how it does it but i’m saying

(1h 34m 42s) Kelly:

okay

(1h 34m 42s)

yeah

(1h 34m 45s) Al:

it could do that, right?

(1h 34m 46s)

If you wanted to actually…

(1h 34m 46s) Kelly:

because you still want those

(1h 34m 47s) Al:

If you wanted to lean into this.

(1h 34m 47s) Kelly:

you still want those like story

(1h 34m 50s)

progressions

(1h 34m 51s)

yeah

(1h 34m 51s) Al:

Exactly, that’s my point.

(1h 34m 53s)

So I think you could expand that.

(1h 34m 55s)

I’m not saying what Moonlight Peaks has is perfect.

(1h 34m 57s)

I’m saying they have the idea of,

(1h 35m)

hey, we’re going romantic now.

(1h 35m 2s)

And so could you do that

(1h 35m 4s)

while also having the equivalent of,

(1h 35m 7s)

like, ask them to meet up

(1h 35m 9s)

rather than ask them on a date

(1h 35m 9s) Kelly:

Yeah, like a story tree instead of just a clear-cut path.

(1h 35m 10s) Al:

or something like that?

(1h 35m 13s)

Yeah, yeah, exactly.

(1h 35m 15s)

I feel like there’s something there

(1h 35m 17s)

and I feel like it’s underserved

(1h 35m 18s)

because the thing is,

(1h 35m 19s)

they either go, here’s romance,

(1h 35m 21s)

or they go, no.

(1h 35m 23s) Kelly:

Yeah, yeah. There’s no middle ground. Yeah, exactly. I do like all of the updates. I think

(1h 35m 23s) Al:

There’s no, like, there’s no in-between.

(1h 35m 30s) Kelly:

that they have added things that… I think getting past the early access wall was very

(1h 35m 37s)

interesting to see how they progressed. Like, I think, you know, we aired our grievances

(1h 35m 41s)

about wishing for automation earlier on. But I…

(1h 35m 44s) Al:

Yeah. So speak, speak, speak on that.

(1h 35m 46s)

Do you just mean in terms of like whether it feels like it’s a continuation of the same game or a different game?

(1h 35m 53s)

Is that the sort of thing you’re talking about?

(1h 35m 55s) Kelly:

No, I feel like it feels like a continuation of the same game, which is, I personally like, I would, I don’t know if I would want it to veer off so heavily after the, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

(1h 36m 5s) Al:

yeah no that’s that’s exactly my point like that’s what you want

(1h 36m 7s)

whereas I think sometimes when you come back to a game it sometimes feels like a different game

(1h 36m 11s) Kelly:

No, I think they did a very good job of maintaining what this game is, and then just following that path while trying to correct some of the things that were maybe bad.

(1h 36m 23s) Al:

yeah but deciding that none of them come earlier in the game I think for me

(1h 36m 27s) Kelly:

But hey, we made it through the first time.

(1h 36m 29s)

So if I can make it through the first time, I can make it through the second time.

(1h 36m 32s) Al:

true but that doesn’t mean it’s fun I think that’s I think that’s my thing is they it didn’t feel like

(1h 36m 33s) Kelly:

Yeah.

(1h 36m 36s) Al:

they felt like they could add any of those changes in the stuff that it felt like they were going

(1h 36m 42s) Kelly:

Yeah, I guess, yeah, that is a good point.

(1h 36m 43s) Al:

this is the early access is the early access and we’re not changing that which I think is a flaw

(1h 36m 52s) Kelly:

Yeah, okay, I see your point, and I do agree with that.

(1h 36m 55s)

Because again, I do wish that some of those earlier automations came out earlier in the game.

(1h 37m 4s)

Because I think it would just allow you to be less stressed out and have more room to do other things.

(1h 37m 10s) Al:

All right, cool. Any final thoughts on this before we wrap up?

(1h 37m 12s) Kelly:

Um, I’m going to keep playing it. I still very much enjoy this game.

(1h 37m 18s)

So, I’m glad I got to come back and talk to you about it after Early Access, finally.

(1h 37m 23s)

You know?

(1h 37m 23s) Al:

Yes, it’s always nice.

(1h 37m 24s)

We don’t always come back to games on the podcast.

(1h 37m 27s)

So it’s nice that we actually managed to do this.

(1h 37m 30s)

And we both had a decent amount.

(1h 37m 31s)

I double checked.

(1h 37m 32s)

It looks like I’ve put in about 40 hours of 1.0.

(1h 37m 36s) Kelly:

Oh, okay. Good. Yeah. Perfect. Yeah.

(1h 37m 36s) Al:

So about the same as what I did in the previous one.

(1h 37m 39s)

So, yeah.

Outro

(1h 37m 41s) Al:

All right.

(1h 37m 41s)

Awesome.

(1h 37m 42s)

Well, thank you for joining me to talk about Fields of Mysteria.

(1h 37m 45s)

Is there anything you’d like to share with the audience?

(1h 37m 47s) Kelly:

nope I just want to say thank you for having me back on again and I like it our our little

(1h 37m 53s)

podcast meetups you know of course

(1h 37m 55s) Al:

any time kelly any time well any time there’s something to talk about

(1h 37m 58s)

sometimes I do wonder whether I just do this podcast so I can talk to my friends on a weekly

(1h 38m 5s)

basis yeah you can follow the podcast on tumblr and on blue sky at thspod you can send us feedback

(1h 38m 6s) Kelly:

I mean, is there anything wrong with that?

(1h 38m 15s) Al:

from our website harvestseason.club where you can also find links to everything to do with the

(1h 38m 19s)

podcast including a link to our patreon patreon.com slash thspod where you can get access to the

(1h 38m 25s)

slack and also get access to our bonus episodes hopefully of which we’ll have on

(1h 38m 30s)

avatar seven havens in a few weeks maybe we’ll see um yeah I think that’s everything thank you

(1h 38m 36s) Kelly:

Thank you again, Al, for having me.

(1h 38m 40s) Al:

again kelly for joining me thank you listeners for listening and until next time have a good harvest

(1h 38m 46s) Theme Tune:

the harvest season is created by al mckinley with support from our patrons including our

(1h 38m 47s) Kelly:

Bye.

(1h 38m 47s) Al:

we did it

(1h 38m 56s) Theme Tune:

pro farmers kevin stewart and elisa our art is done by micah the brave and our music is done by

(1h 39m 3s)

nick burgess feel free to visit our website harvestseason.club for show notes and links

(1h 39m 9s)

to things we discussed in this episode

(1h 39m 20s) Al:

We didn’t manage it in the hour and a half

(1h 39m 22s)

that we’d originally planned for,

(1h 39m 23s)

but two hours.

(1h 39m 24s) Kelly:

But I don’t think we went, yeah, which is still not, we could be worse for us.

(1h 39m 29s) Al:

We could be worse.

(1h 39m 30s)

We could be worse.

(1h 39m 32s)

I think we still have the, like,

(1h 39m 36s)

is it second longest episode is ours?

(1h 39m 39s) Kelly:

Oh boy, which one is it?

(1h 39m 40s) Al:

Our, our, oh goodness.

(1h 39m 42s)

Let me check.

(1h 39m 43s)

Give me, give me a minute.

(1h 39m 44s)

Let me grab.

(1h 39m 45s)

I do actually have a script

(1h 39m 48s)

that every time I add an episode,

(1h 39m 50s)

the stats of what the longest episodes are

(1h 40m 2s)

It’s longest episode.

(1h 40m 4s)

Nope.

(1h 40m 13s)

top durations and the top one that’s uh and kelly oh it’s so um your longest one is actually

(1h 40m 25s)

the one you did with Codey about

(1h 40m 28s)

what was that episode oh yes that’ll be the silksong one yeah so that was that was two hours 24

(1h 40m 32s) Kelly:

The Silksong one?

(1h 40m 35s)

OK, OK.

(1h 40m 38s)

Yeah, I was going to say, because I know in our thing

(1h 40m 40s)

that it says we talked for like two hours and four

(1h 40m 44s) Al:

yeah yeah and then our longest one mine and yours was the Fields of Mistria one which was two hours

(1h 40m 50s) Kelly:

Oh, that’s funny.

(1h 40m 50s) Al:

and 80 so you are you have two of the top was that top

(1h 40m 55s)

so you have the fifth longest and the

(1h 41m 5s)

and the 11th longest

(1h 41m 10s)

yeah

(1h 41m 11s) Kelly:

Not bad for stats, I’m pretty happy with that.

(1h 41m 14s) Al:

just just don’t ask about uh I think I think the person with the most longest ones is micah

(1h 41m 20s)

so the actual the longest one is Codey and chelsea from a few weeks ago uh they talked about what was

(1h 41m 21s) Kelly:

  • Mm, okay.

(1h 41m 36s) Al:

they talked about Bee Simulator and that was two hours and 47 minutes.

(1h 41m 38s) Kelly:

Oh, okay, okay.

(1h 41m 42s) Al:

But then the second is me and Micah, the third is me and Micah,

(1h 41m 48s)

the seventh is me and Micah, and they are one of two episodes.

(1h 41m 49s) Kelly:

[laughs]

(1h 41m 57s) Al:

They are either episodes on Story of Seasons or Harvest Moon,

(1h 42m 1s)

or they are the Game of the Year episodes.
